I found this spot through Yelp while driving around the area. I stopped by just for the mochi! My friends don't care for mochi, but I really wanted to try it! They also sell shaved ice, ice cream, and other Japanese snacks. When you walk in, there's a display case with an assortment of mochi and manju with different fillings. I got there around noon, so most of the flavors were still available, but I bought the last coffee manju! I got so excited that I forgot to snap a photo of the inside of the shop! I was only 2nd in line, so I had to make some quick decisions on what I wanted to try! This is definitely a grab-and-go kind of spot, so there's no seating. Stopped by here to get some shaved ice & mochi. I love their peanut butter mochi. I usually have the small pieces of mochi, but I was surprised when I saw they can come stuffed with stuff. They have many flavors or mochi with bean inside. The shaved ice was massive if youre eating for one or sharing the extra small/small is enough. The condensed milk topping is a must have. The only thing that can save you on a hot day is something cold, and Osaka-Ya delivers just that. Somehow, I'd never been here despite living in Sac my whole life. The cool little snow cone window had quite the crowd, but the wait was short. As someone who doesn't usually love cold desserts, I really enjoyed the Tiger's Blood flavor and the ice had a really nice texture. I appreciated this one and the serving size, especially because I recently learned it is indeed possible to mess up a snow cone, but I won't name names. There's also a little market inside. Guess I'm currently revisiting places that I wrote "bad" reviews about many years ago, Osaka-Ya being one or those places. I've gotten manju from here throughout the years after my old review, but never returned for a snow cone until recently. I'm really not a fan of their shave ice - it's hard, not finely ground, and overly sweetened. Like everything, the manju prices have continued to increase over the years. I used to get manju fairly frequently, but now it just tends to be a more of a once a year treat. They are really the only actual manju place I know of in the area, and it's what I've grown up eating since I was a kid. I love coming to Osaka-Ya during the summer time for their bento boxes, shave ice, and mochi. Today, I came specifically for their shave ice. The sizes are big and super affordable. I got an xsmall with mango syrup, green tea ice cream, mochi, and snow cap. The line was long was it moves quickly and you get your order quick too. For the snow cones, they accept cash only, no cards. There is a small little bench close to the ground next the bushes outside where you can sit and wait, and enjoy your snow cone. Parking is tricky here. I'm not aware of a private lot so it's all street parking and during high times it's hard to find a space. My husband was determined to go in so he doubled parked leaving me in the car. That made me so nervous. I wish he just went around the block and found a space. And he wasn't in and out in a flash like he had hoped. There was a line inside the tiny shop. We aren't one of those people that plan ahead for New Years Day. So we didn't do a pre order of their soup mochi. We are the ones that shop on New Years Eve hoping that they made a little extra for us not planners. We lucked out. What a great place to stop by for a quick dessert or even a quick lunch bite. Today I went to grab some mochi and some other Japanese goodies. The mochi reminds me of Turkish delights or dduk, but less chewy. Not better but different. I also liked that the mochi was very colorful and had different flavors like blue raspberry which tasted very blue and slightly raspberry. Lolz. I dropped by Osaka-Ya in search for a small asian treat before hitting the road and unexpectedly left with a snow cone along with a few mochis to try. I started by checking out the inside of the store and it felt kind of empty however I imagine that these are one of those small shops that only make and buy just enough product to sell. The vibe of it reminded me of those small musubi shops in Hawaii -- a small modest gem tucked away for explorers to find. I usually don't get snow cones, but felt compelled to get one considering it was almost 100 degrees outside. I got an XS Snow Cone with Tiger Blood Syrup (tasted a little like fruit punch) with condensed milk which was an add-on recommended by a woman who was ordering ahead of me. The Snow Cone came out to $6 which I thought was reasonable considering how big it was, big enough to share with my boyfriend. We thought it was good, not too sweet which is best for us - however I do wish they would've put a little bit more condensed milk as it didn't really stand out for my tastebuds much. As for the mochi, I grabbed 4 different ones to try which were all recommended by the cashier. So far, I've tried the raspberry mochi which was lovely. I realize I don't have much mochi tasting experience to compare it to anything so can't share much here but it was flavorful and pretty big in my opinion. I docked down a star as I feel like the inside of the store could probably use some air conditioning, it just as hot indoors as it was outdoors. This is only a mild concern since there was cooked food sitting out. I think it would make it a much more pleasant experience for customers during these hotter days and especially for the employees. You must carry small sums of cash because they couldn't break $50 bill so I had to pay with a card and they charged me the 4% service fee. BUT, I came here for the mochi and this place is top notch. This has been a local favorite for a reason. I get the white red bean mochi, kinako (red bean as well as the cubes with no filling), peanut butter, and butter mochi when they have it available. They also have sushi and Inari lunch plates and onigiri sometimes. Best to call ahead if there are certain things you're looking for. Service is consistent and friendly. This small business opened in 1963 and is one of the few Japanese Manju Shops in Nor Cal that makes them in shop! The box our family of 4 shared came with a variety of colorful mochi and manju! We enjoyed the fillings and sweet flavors! My eldest loved her Hawaiian Sun Strawberry Guava as well! I would definitely recommend this shop! One of the last remnants of Japanese heritage in Sacramento, this place is revered for the art of mochi and manju and they do it well. Made by hand, these little Japanese confectionary treats are rare and should be valued by all who come to this little place. I have yet to see a manju shop that does it well that also has a neat, clean, and modern look to it. Osaka-ya is no exception. It's a mish mash of items, but who cares? You're here for one thing....actually a few things. Like their exceptional shave ice. FOOD: Their mochi and manju are very good. And there are so few places left. The stuff you can get at a Japanese market in the refrigerated or frozen section? They don't hold a candle to these creations. But they serve other things as well. They have a small grocery selection of Japanese goods. But their other hallmark is shave ice. Not sno-cones. No, these are done the traditional Hawaiian way. And are so good. The only thing I don't understand is why you only get one flavor? SERVICE: Good. Not the best, but good. And they don't provide packaging the same way Fugetsu-do does. Ok there are so many varieties with slight differences that I ended up buying 10. What's amazing was none of these were misses! They were all good. I had the highest doubt about the sakura which usually is too floral and artificial tasting but it was subtle and pleasant. The peanut butter one is sold in a box of 4 (or 6?) but sometimes they have singles, comes as smooth or chunky peanut butter. They have many green tea and red bean flavors. The strawberry sando was rich-fine for sharing, but not something I'd finish alone. The mochi, however, is where this place proves itself. At around $2 each, they're reasonably priced with plenty of flavors to choose from. I tried Green Tea (Smooth Red Bean), Kiku (Smooth White Bean), and Sakura (Diced Cherry Leaves with Koshi-An Smooth Red Bean). Each had its own character and the kind of soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture that makes you come back for more. Parking is limited to the street, so expect a short walk. Service was average-helpful if you ask, but don't rely on recommendations since everything is described as "good." The shop also doubles as a Japanese market, carrying snacks, sauces, and pantry items, which adds extra value. For perspective, Sacramento already has a historic anchor in Osaka Ya, the city's long-standing spot for traditional manju and mochi. This new shop doesn't replace that history, but it offers another well-executed option for Japanese sweets.
