Meant to post these pictures before but am finally getting around to it. We had the agaves planted, our seating areas (rock) and edging done first (last review from summer 2022) and then had the rest of the plantings, stepping stones, finished setting up drip irrigation and bark done in early fall 2022. This allowed us to manage our budget as well as accommodate a remodel we were doing at the same time (part of the yard was used for keeping materials and tools). We are absolutely loving our backyard though we haven't been able to spend as much time there recently with all the rain we've been getting. Still, we were enjoying being on our patio while having coffee in the mornings well into December, and also being able to have a fire to keep off the chill in the evenings in late fall and early winter. I've been stewing for 2 years now, this is my therapeutic attempt to calm down over a mistake that is impossible to fix. Since I can't go back in time and tell myself " Genesis Landscapes are liars! Just say NO!" We wanted our 19x30' eyesore of a yard to finally, after 10 years, become a pebble covered low maintenance, low water using curb appealing space with 5 or so desert plants. After a 30 minute in person consultation emphasizing and repeating that we are not plant people so we need this yard to be "the lowest possible maintenance" because we don't have the inclination time or money for upkeep. Also our environmental concerns over chemical weed killer. It will be so low maintenance they said. You'll rarely have to water they said. Just weed here and there as you go they said. The price they charged was TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS. It sounded insane. But, it was to solve our problem forever, and to add value to our house. So we did it. What we got was an outrageously priced HIGH maintenance heap of river rocks that roll off into the street/driveway/sidewalk and an endless supply (thanks to the newly installed drip system which uses more water than we ever have before) of prickly weeds and crab grass choking out the plants we paid for. No, the drip system does not only water the spots where the plants are, it waters the entire yard. To use more water. In California. I, myself, have since plugged several of the holes in the system not near our plants since they didn't deem it necessary on their second trip out. "Weed here and there" means to go out EVERY DAY and pull weeds by hand and spray weed killer almost everywhere yet somehow also strategically to try to avoid killing the plants we bought and the crab grass ensnaring them. Major steps were missed. They didn't kill the weeds before starting. They didn't scrape low enough into the dirt. They didn't put down a solitary centimeter of landscape fabric. When we called them a few months after they finished to complain about the weeds they specifically said normally their process is to scrape down into the dirt and spray multiple times over a 2 week period to make sure all the weeds are dead. I asked why that wasn't done in our case and they said "because you were in a rush." We NEVER said we were in a rush, we had 10 years behind this idea. What I did mention was my weed concerns before, during and after installation. They rebutted with "we don't use landscape fabric because it doesn't work." Lies. Per other professional landscaper opinions this is not the case. Every day I roll my ankle on these rocks, every day 15 new weeds assault my eyes, every day my back and hands hurt from weeding, every day I spend 5 minutes kicking said rocks back into the yard, I burn with Sisyphian rage of all that money we can never get back. It's a literal money pit. If we have any hope of battling the weeds we need to keep paying into the money pit to hire help. Could have been on a luxurious international vacation, but alas, a new crop of weeds wickedly unfurls towards the sky. And the best part is, this spring thanks to all the rain, our yard has returned to it's eyesore state, like the $10,000 never existed at all. Quite the genesis. read more

We wanted to replace our front lawn with drought tolerant native plants and found Genesis. The owner, Morgan, was very responsive and helpful from the beginning. She came out to our house within a few short days of our initial contact and listened to what we were interested in. She had great suggestions and was very knowledgeable. We also had 2 brick columns with lights on top. One was tilted by tree roots and there was no easy way to level it. She came up with beautiful, modern lighting along the walkways and also to illuminate our big tree, which is really the focal point of the yard. We really appreciated how well Morgan kept in touch with us throughout the process and provided us with a lot of useful ideas and information. It was clear that she paid attention to our ideas and what types of plants we liked. We went with Genesis Landscape because it was a local company but not a huge one that worked with the same crew for their jobs. The estimate wasn't the lowest, but we felt that they had a good track record with the kind of work we wanted done. Morgan was our estimator and finalized the design work. We had an initial plan, but she gave us suggestions on different materials that we hadn't thought of and simplified our design to keep costs down. We also applied for a rebate with the City of Sacramento's turf replacement program. We wanted drought tolerant plants and Morgan is very knowledgeable and passionate about California native plants. The existing lawn was heavily shaded by our neighbor's huge trees, so low light tolerant plants were chosen for part of the yard in our estimate. However, after the estimate and before work was started, the neighbors cut those trees way back; Morgan changed the plants to suit the new light requirements quickly. She also produced an invoice that had everything the City needed for the rebate program. The crew run by Jose was fantastic. They were quick, worked so efficiently that they finished removal of turf/mowing strip and existing sprinklers and installation of all the new landscaping in two days! Clean up was done each day. AMAZING TEAM! It started out with Morgan and design. She listened well, incorporared my desires, and made suggestions where applicable - one would think that should be common, but it is not. I relied on her knowledge of plants, artistry, and consideration of my deisres to make my overall transformation approach look good - and and she did not disappoint - it's terrific! Morgan answered my questions and worked towards a super design - I think it looks good now, but because plants will get big and Morgan plans for that (like a good landscape desiner will do) I'm excited to see how it will look when the plants all fill out. Then implementation with Jose and his team. I have never seen such and efficient and effective team! Jose had the logistics set up such that his team just rolled right through all the tasks! They started right on time, everyone knew what they needed to do, they worked with eachother and constantly helped eachother out and everything was *so* efficient. Even my neighbors commented on how amazing and professional the crew was. I can see why they need all finalized decisions before implementation because the whole flow is set up in advance. But they weren't just efficient, they were also very thorough and detail oriented and each crew member took great care with the entire process. Plus, each day the whole area was cleaned up and tools stored neatly. I never had to check on them/make sure they were progressing. I only checked on them because I was curious - that's why i know they did a superb job. The whole process was efficient and took maybe 2 months from when I emailed expressing interest in a consult to when it was all done (mostly my schedule delays). Once construction was scheduled, it took only one week to complete everything on my 9,000 square foot lot (maybe half of that landscape?) - from complete removal of old landscape (including concrete mow strips), digging in terrible rock filled soil with pick axes, to planting and mulching and installing decomposed granite and pea gravel (in some areas).
