This was an excellent burger and worth the drive. It was quite a drive too. I went up the road from Beckwourth and through the woods for miles. I got there just not long before their closing time at 2 pm. I drank a pitcher of water on the patio while I waited for my food. The place is owned by the Palmaz family that has the winery in Napa Valley. They raise their own cattle. Everything is fresh and tasty. They were busy considering how far out it is. House made pickles with beer battered coating. So yummy. Wagu beef burger with house made potato chips, worth the drive. Beef is sourced on the ranch that the restaurant is located on. Talk about off the beaten path. When the nearest town is 5 miles away and has a population of 150, that's a remote location. But the drive and food are worth it if you are in Plumas County. The building overlooks cow pastures and the surrounding hills. The dining room is a welcoming with its shelves of books, abundant wood, and warm potbellied stove. The food is equally good: I had the Bouillabaisse, which was overfilled with shrimp, halibut, clams, mussels. The broth was absolutely delicious. Do not be afraid to order this even though you are nearly 200 miles from the Pacific Ocean. We shared a plate of fried green tomatoes. The chicken sandwich was tasty and the mushroom pasta very good. They are only open on weekends. There is a nice outdoor patio with heaters but temperatures are dropping quickly, so be sure to call ahead to reserve an indoor table. Also, very good wines and beers. The Genesee Valley Store-Restaurant has reopened and is now offering delicious three and four course prix fixe dinners on Friday and Saturday evenings during the Fall and Winter seasons. We enjoyed the Tomahawk Steak special which included a meatball appetizer, generous caprese salad, sides of creamy cheese spinach, potato fritters and of course a delicious tomahawk steak smothered in mushrooms and garlic, followed by a berry cheese cake. All courses were delicious and the service and staff were excellent and knowledgable about the wine list as well as the local history. This thoughtfully restored gem is located in the beautiful Genesee valley well off the beaten path, but well worth the drive from the surrounding communities in the Almanor basin, as well as the American, Indian and Meadow Valley areas. What a find! When you are traveling in the forests of Northern California, in places with populations of 150, you don't have a lot of expectations when it comes to dining. Genessee Store is a hidden gem! We stopped for lunch on a Saturday and had the best burgers of our lives. The menu is small but diverse and upscale. First, and most importantly, the food is fantastic. I've had dinner and brunch here and both meals were amazing (as were the other dishes I picked at). For dinner I had a pork tenderloin special, and while I highly recommend it, you are likely out of luck because it was a special. I attached a recent menu and while I'm sure there are staples, it does change. Regarding food, I would also like to mention that you can taste each ingredient. For example, I had an egg bake for brunch and I could taste the chargrilled green-chili, the chipotle peppers, eggs and the sausage; no one flavor enveloped the bake... which tends to happen at other places I've gotten an egg bake. Second, the interior is great! It's got a modern country feel that doesn't feel dated or trying so hard it becomes pretentious. How special is this place?! Well worth the drive to a gorgeous remote mountain valley. We have loved this store (now a restaurant) for decades, but have rediscovered it as a special place to get take out during COVID. We have especially enjoyed the fish weekly specials. read more

Reservations recommended. Very good food, friendly staff. We were seated next to the bathroom entrance because we had no reservations. Not busy, food coming out of the kitchen was very slow. Lunch courses were worth the wait. Desserts could use some improving, dry. I would go back. Lunch for 2 with dessert and no alcohol was about $100 including 20% tip. read more

My hubby and I live in Taylorsville and were really looking forward to this place reopening! Stepped in for some lunch and really enjoyed ourselves. New menu was pretty cool, although would love a vegetarian option for those burgers...the Caesar salad was soo delicious and a great size, the perfect amount of anchovy flavor too. Fried pickles also super good, would have loved a few more pieces in there for the price though. We tried the melted cheese dip appetizer and parmesan french fries too, but weren't super impressed with the last two. The dip came out with sliced apples and baguette and some jelly. The dip itself was very tasty, but I would say toast the baguette and maybe add in some olives or another thing to dip. With fries I prefer fresh cut, these seemed of the frozen variety maybe? Not sure, but we didn't love them... The atmosphere was AWESOME and we love what they did with the remodel, beautiful details, especially the pictures from our beautiful valley on the TV. Three of us had dinner here on Saturday, June 4th, and we were all blown away. We have known this venue for many years and had very fond memories of it before it was remodeled some 7 years ago. The space, just large enough for a handful of tables, is charmingly rustic and comfortable. Our servers were uncommonly enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The food was first-rate. Among the three of us, we had excellent beef kofta, burger and homemade potato chips, and Gee's noodles with homemade beef broth. The chocolate cookie dessert was amazing. The Flaming Jack appetizer, which someone had recommended to us, wasn't on the menu, but they made it for us anyway, and it was excellent. This restaurant is literally in the middle of nowhere and not on the way to anywhere but serves food worthy of Napa. Perhaps the fact that the owners also own a Napa winery accounts for that. It's a destination restaurant well worth the trip. read more

HOWEVER - there is a caveat, you cannot count on them to be open, so if you're coming from out of town CALL first. But if they are open and you're not in a hurry - stop in and enjoy. The fare is simple, burgers and sandwiches, but always delicious and presented beautifully. They are really friendly and the valley may be the most beautiful spot north of Tahoe. This newly opened charming restaurant mixes old with new and was once the post office. It retains many original features and artifacts. Tastefully decorated, it seats a limited number of patrons inside, however it also has a large patio that is very inviting. The lunch menu was varied and changes from time to time. The owner has imported a touch of class with authentic remodel of the old store and menu that rivals options in Reno or the Bay Area. What a wonderful find! We were exploring all the little towns around Genesee and heard about the Genesee Store, which is not a store at all. It's a great restaurant. We highly recommend this little gem. You won't be disappointed. The restaurant is nestled in a valley between the mountains and the scenery is breathtaking. The bldg has been there since 1850. We had a wonderful experience the first time we made our way out to the Genessee Store from Meadow Valley. There were two of us and our service dog and we sat outside on the patio. We were treated to local live music (it was one of the musicians that told me of the date). The server was warm and friendly, the limited menu (for the music event) was tasty, there was a friendly local crowd, including the owners and we truly enjoyed our evening. We enjoyed it so much that we wanted to take our visiting family from out of town there and that was not so nice. We were greeted rudely outside by a staff member, "No dogs allowed, this is a cattle ranch." It rubbed us the wrong way, he could have been more polite, or given us a chance to speak, that we were only showing our guests around since we had been impressed with the place and had tried to get a reservation prior to our visit but had been told they were fully booked. The patio was empty when we drove by. They must not need the business. We will not be going back anytime soon. read more

Hubs & I popped in here for lunch while we were visiting Taylorsville for a weekend camping trip.. Great store, very delicious and well prepared food and the customer service was excellent! I love Genesee - its a beautiful, tiny country town (pop:15) in the lush green Indian Valley and the outdoor seating at the store allows you to take in the entire landscape.
