I had a bad experience with an online order. I bought a "new" pedal car from this store and had it shipped to my house, but the shipping cost ended up being almost double what they originally quoted me--even though they used the same company. When the car arrived, it had missing parts, dents, scratches, a bent suspension, and what looked like an old seat. I tried contacting the store and left a voicemail with my information, but no one called me back. A week later, I finally reached the same salesman who took my online order. I explained all the damages and missing parts, and the next day he called me back offering to send the missing parts and give me a $20 credit for the dents and damages--which isn't even close to what it would cost to get a proper paint job. It feels like they just expect me to spray-paint it myself. Then, they sent me an invoice for the refund, but it doesn't show the full amount I originally paid. This last year or so they've had the WORST scalper prices for their Pokemon cards! For example, today, a $120 Charizard set being sold at $200, on release day. What??? Everywhere else is selling at or slightly above the $120. What are they selling it so high?? Another example is a $15 Gengar deck being sold at $40. Again..what?? Who is paying this?? ADA non compliance! When I wanted to go upstairs to shop but I can't use stairs, the employee offered to have the manager "talk" to me then never the manager never showed up. The employees can bring things down for me to look at but I couldn't shop the whole floor. So if you can't use stairs, sorry.... Mostly. Usually at Ace Hardware, I go to the fastener section and I pull out what I want. Today in one bin had 56 self tapping screws that I need it, in a box with a barcode scratch scratched out. All I've ever done at Ace Hardware is put in a bag the number of ones I wanted and List how many and the price, only the price and the quantity. Today after standing at your crush register for five minutes while the young man tried to get a price check, I finally told him put them away, I don't know why you're doing this I've never experienced before at Ace. He basically gave me the feeling that I was trying to steal something, but the box was already written by your staff and it was very frustrating. The ace in my neighborhood never does this, they look at what's in there and they take customers work for it. Liberty Lake location. I came in at 11 am on a Saturday and was treated horrible. Customer service not so much. I needed more tint added to my paint to make it usable because the employee that helped me with the original can of paint used the wrong base, it was for pastel. I took it to the paint counter and of the 4 employees standing at the counter not one of them acknowledged my presence with a just a minute or eye contact. They knew I had a paint issue and I was treated like a leper. I was refused help and all that was needed was to have more dark tint added. Instead all I heard was no way we can do that. By the way another establishment did help me and now the paint in the right depth of color do I can use it an not be out $60. Sometimes it pays to actually treat people nice and listen to them. Unfortunately I will never go back and we used to shop there all the time for the more neighborhood feel. Yo just don't find many stores like this anymore, with such a mix of items. It is fun to wander thru the narrow isles and see what they have. Service has always been friendly. very disappointed. walked up to the door at exactly 8pm, for a key. the doors were already locked with no way of entry. i asked the young man at the exit if we could make a key and he stated, no as they were closed. what's unfortunate, is that there were many other people in the store. we needed and in and out transaction, and they completely refused as they lack customer service. read more

Centrally located, and chock full of just about everything for your hardware and outdoor needs. Great selection of winter gear, ropes, toys, spray paint, shovels, traction sand, hunting supplies, etc. The General Store has been a Spokane classic for years, but they recently partnered up with Ace Hardware. I stopped in to snag a good quality metal shovel and I found a sturdy, wide, metal shovel, made in Canada, for $20 bucks. I was also looking for some good winter socks, as I've been having trouble finding good boot socks elsewhere around town. They had a great selection for kids, women, and men, and I found some really nice options to take home. Service was very friendly and quick. Three staff people helped me during my visit and everyone knew just where everything was and were concerned about me finding the right item. I'll be back General Store. read more

I've lived all over America and I have never found a store that literally has everything I want, from guns, auto parts to disc golf, they even had a part for my GMC that I couldn't get at ANY of the big box parts stores, it saved my bacon...They're open 7 days a week on top of everything. Bought a set of four Spring Clamps there in October. Tried one shortly after that and it broke on the first use (shattered). Rather than spend a significant portion of their worth on gas making a special trip back to their store, I put them in my truck to return when I was in the area. Long story short, I was told it was too late - past 30 days since day of purchase - that was their 'policy'. I have a new policy now also: 'Limit my spending at The General Store & Ace Hardware'. A defective item or piece of junk will stay that way for much longer than 30 days - and so does a store's reputation. When asked why they had such a policy, I was told 'because we can't resell it like this'. No kidding! It's broken. One thing I like is that all former and active military personell get a 10% discount all the time on any non-discounted item. I don't know what it is about the General Store that attracts me to its narrow aisles piled high with bargain junk and poor selection, but I keep going back, looking for the perfect three-dollar shirt or the unavailable faucet stem or the just-right pair of nonexistent bargain socks. Maybe it's exactly the disorganization, the seemingly endless supply of the average Spokanite (who does not actually exist) or the illusion of my saving money on camping supplies (that I would never actually use), but even right now, when thinking "I need to get my son a stainless steal water bottle," I'm considering going back to the General Store, even though I almost never find what I need, and almost always am frustrated and disappointed when I leave. There is something viscerally appealing about this place. But I don't quite have my finger on the source or the appeal. You probably have to experience it for yourself. You will understand. I know you will. Go see. Get some work clothes. A new hunting cap. Some fireball fish eggs. And ask yourself if you don't feel they trust you as you make your way to the checkout, as they ask for ID and want to know the name of your third cousin twice removed before accepting your check... as they examine your twenty-dollar bill with a counterfeit pen and a wet-ink sensing bluelight strobe (I made that up... They had a big sign on there reader board that stated they had 4000 units of hand sanitizer and were expecting more. Ace Hardware lost my business over $100.00 Slowly but surely I've lost all confidence in hardware stores. You used to be able to accomplish virtually anything. You could rely on their help, technical advice, and amazing customer service. But then came the "Super Hardware Stores", Lowes and Home Depot that treat customers like ATMs. The bright spot in all of this was Ace Hardware. They had amazing, highly informed employees that took the time to help you. It didn't matter if it was a single odd screw or a complete kitchen remodel, they were always there for you. They cared! Apparently, 2020 brought about significant changes to Ace Hardware. They are probably struggling like every business this year due to covid. But I'm not sure why this would make them choose to be evil. You see, this all started because an early snowstorm hit the Spokane, Washington area. My wife's 68-year-old sister who lives with us is a smoker. Yes, she knows smoking is bad for her, but this is not the point. She is incredibly helpful around the house and is a blessing to me and my family. The day after the snow fell, my wife and she drove and called stores in the area so my sister-in-law could buy a small propane heater to cut the cold when she smoked outside. She was so happy to find a tabletop unit at the General Store & Ace Hardware on North Division for only $106.00. Mind you, she lives on a fixed income and has only $150.00 a month in "expendable income". My wife asked the clerk if she could return if it didn't work. The clerk said with a smile, "Just bring it back and we can refund or exchange it". After assembling the unit, it was clear that it was a very cheap made Chinese product. This was confirmed by the "Made in China" sticker on the bottom of the unit. But still, it only mattered if it worked or not. It was 30 degrees outside when we tested the unit. If you put your hand within a few inches of it, you could feel the heat. It clearly wasn't intended to keep even a small area warm. It only used those small propane bottles used for camp stoves. We immediately called and asked if we could return it. The person they talked to said it needed to run for a while before you could "feel the full heat" from the unit. So she kept it running for 30 minutes and still not much heat. The next day, we called the Ace Hardware store near us and asked if we could return it. They said yes. After getting there, they explained that they couldn't accept the return because Ace Hardware stores are independently owned and you need to return it to the store that you bought it from. OK, no problem. We then called the General Store & Ace Hardware on North Division which was across town and asked if we could return it. They asked if we had the box and receipt which we indeed had. Mason, the person we talked on the phone with, added a caveat; He asked if we had "run propane through the unit?", I said, yes. He said we don't normally take them back if they had been used but he would, this one time, take it back. Great! We then drove across town to the General Store & Ace Hardware on North Division and I loaded the unit and the box into a shopping cart and my sister-in-law took it in by herself. I waited in the car. About 5 minutes later, she comes out with the unit and the box. I asked her what happened. She said Mason told her that the unit had been used "too much" and he wouldn't accept the return. Please remember earlier when the other employee told her to let it run for a while so you could "feel the full heat". Because my sister-in-law isn't the most confrontational person, I thought I would go in and explain to Mason how she lived on a fixed income and couldn't really afford it. He wasn't having any of it. He said it isn't about her being "an old lady" it was about the condition of the unit (used). Maybe it was his sneering snot-nosed look when he said it, but I really lost it. I am not proud of my choice of words, maybe you just had to be there, but I let them fly. Beyond the explicative, the only thing I remember saying disgustedly was "I thought you guys cared". To end this long-winded explanation, let me, let you know that I will never step foot in another Ace Hardware store in my life. I'll go to Lowes and Home Depot. At least there I know they don't PRETEND to care and quite frankly the prices are better. read more

I will be the first to admit that we stop in the General Store to bust our boredom funk when we need to have a "family outing." I do agree that the aisles are rather claustrophobic and have no organization scheme but it sure is fun to look at each one! Super friendly and extremely helpful staff. I had a question about a plumbing issue and I received attention and patience and even a second opinion to make sure he was right! Love that. They have a coffee stand, which may or may not help with the disorganization, because it's a little out of place (much like everything else, I suppose). Bored? Stop in and have a look-see. What can I say about the General Store?? I live fairly close and so that is usually my first stop when I need a random tool, car/motorcycle/rv part, camping supply, fishing license or yard decoration. Overall it is a pretty good place and is locally owned, so I like supporting them. Negatives for me-- the staff is not particularly freindly (in fact the checkers don't really seem to have much interest in serving customers), and often they just don't have that oddball household item that I really need. read more

Just gotta say, I generally think of the General Store as a great local hardware with lots of one-of-a-kind, do-I-really-need-that kinds of items that no one else in town bothers to have on their dusty shelves. Well today was one of those days when a friend and I had time to spare and only one need - a lamp kit. As read on a couple other ratings, the store was haphazardly set but clearly labeled. We found the electrical department and the lamp kit - thank you for playing, you earn 4 stars. As we made our way forward we spotted a clearance section and as suckers we could not resist! We entered the cluttered and unkempt isle of managerial specials. It was like the manager knew us! Well no, not really, not at all actually. You see my friend loves coffee and there was 1 half a pair of salt and pepper shakers shaped like a latte, she had to have it. You see, se loves coffee but a 70%off sale was just too much. We looked for the other half but had no luck. A zealous sales associate asked if we were finding everything ok. We asked if there was a match to the set. He said he would look, he did and reported the one we had was the last one of a broken set. We asked if the $5.99 was the price for the one or for the set? He went to find the manager. He returned with the cute latte salt or pepper shaker and an answer. The price was for the pair. Ok, sounded accurate. The next question seemed to perplex the manager, so if the price for the pair is $5.99 and one half is broken/missing/not otherwise found, wouldn't the price now be $2.49? Manager, "you are already getting a discount!" Us, ok but its only half the product and according to your computer its broken PLUS it has a chip in it. Manager, "it's 70% off!" Us, ok but it's only half and other sets marked at the same price (like these little chickens or purses or birds or Christmas bells...) the manager just walked away. Due to his inability to rationalize the Managers Special leads me to believe this managers ability to run a store should be questioned. Another unfortunate situation was the the quick jump made by two sales associates at checkout who pointed out their dislike for the manager and his handling of our situation and from what they said other similar situations prior to ours from customers who also got sucked into the manager's special isle vortex. I don't yelp often but when I do... (yeah I don't drink beer either) ok so really. For the sake of the employees and return customers (like me who will just run to Lowes next time - yep, it'll be a while before I go back to the General Store) look into the sanity and and business practices of your manager named Mike Shandy. They have the poorest return policy of any establishment I have ever encountered. Even with a receipt they will not return items for a refund unless you have the original bank card it was bought with... if you try to return something with no receipt, they give you half of the value of that item. They claim restocking fee.. ridiculous!!! I have found a few decent deals there but will boycott them as long as they have such a poor return system. I would give them no stars at this point because of the attitude that one receives when trying to return items. I went here to get canning jars They had an end cap of both wide mouth and small mouth quart jars priced at $9.99. When I brought my purchase to the with cashier they rung up at $12.99. I brought this to the attention of the cashier and he got the manager,Grady to come and fix it. Grady said he could not because people move things all the time. When I pointed out that it was an entire end cap of product with 8 cases and 2 price stockers on each shelf and that was not a customer error. I wanted them at the price marked. He told me they would not make mark up. This was not my fault or problem. They should have sold them at the price THEY marked them at. read more

I just two days ago bought a pair of 20 $ insoles from general store. I tryed to get some one to help me when I was there purchasing them to let me try the insoles in my shoe to make sure they would fit. The guy said he couldn't do it. But he said no worry's you can always bring it back so I thought nothing about it. Intelligence next day when I realized they did not fit. So I proseaded to take them back to store. They 3 lady's that were managers that day told me I could not exchange them they told me it was a state law that I could not exchange them. Now mind you these insoles were never worn in perfect shape with original box and receipt. So I looked up state law their is no such law. This store refused to help me. They were so very rude to me I still cannot believe they lied to me. And even if its store policy then it should have been clearly posted but it wasn't anywear that I could find. If you live on the South hill or in the center of town, the General store is located conveniently on the way to all the big-box chain stores on to the North side of town. They don't always have what I need, but it's worth stopping by because when they do have it, it saves 20 minutes of sitting at traffic lights, and being there is inexplicably more pleasant than going to a Walmart or Home Depot. There is something nostalgic about the place that reminds me of the little-bit-of-everything stores that were around before there were Walmarts everywhere. They have some things that I remember seeing around in childhood, but that I didn't think existed anymore. When I was looking for a home phone, they had rotary dial phones, and not like an updated version, the exact same thing my Mom had sitting on the kitchen counter when I was growing up. I don't know if someone is actually still making them or if they had just been sitting in the General warehouse for 30 years. read more

Im very dissapointed with there loss prevention staff as i was detained ,humiliated and taken in a room and was told to empty my pockets on something someone had allegedly saw .after finding absoloutly nothing they then proceed to issue various threats and continued to treat me like a crimanal as they led me back out mind you they did this in front of my kids saying things that were not profesoinally acceptable in any work eviroment.so if you like being called a theif in front of your family and berated in a public sitation i highly recommend these douchbags. read more

Went into the store a few days ago in an effort to shop local. Needed 3 life jackets, a boat buoy, a 12v switch and a few pairs of heavy duty work pants. Was on a motorcycle so I had my helmet and pack, upon entering the store I was immediately told that I couldn't have my backpack with me in the store. I wasn't comfortable leaving my pack with my digital camera and laptop unsecured so I took my business to Sports Authority who helped me get what I needed. I understand that stores need to implement some sort of loss prevention measures but making all shoppers out to be thieves is not the way to go about it.
