However -- whenever I risk booking with ANY other technician, the experience is always lackluster. I've had technicians awkwardly squabble over who 'has' to do my nails. I've had technicians rip into my cuticles so hard they bleed. When I went in recently for a gel manicure soak-off, they just haphazardly dipped my fingers in acetone and sent me on my way. My nails looked awful and my skin peeled for days afterward, to the point where my hands looked diseased. I personally won't come back here unless I'm specifically booking with Phoebe, who really is amazing.

Unfortunately, when filing my nails, two fingers were cut by the file (see photos). I'm not mortally wounded, it is basically just two paper cuts. Even so though it is of course not the outcome you're looking for for a paid service. I think this may have happened for two reasons. First, the service was a bit rushed relative to my other experiences with Leo. Second, after my nails were shaped initially, I asked for them to be more rounded because they were very flat at first. The nail tech had already trimmed my nails (per my request) so I think to get a rounded shape she had to dig into my nails beds more. Even so, the shape is still flatter on top than I would have liked. Probably trimming less off next time would have solved this.

I was in Ann Arbor for a few days and wanting to get a pedicure. I'd mentally resolved that I would not be able to get my nails done on a Sunday. However, I went down State Street to grab some lunch. As I exited the restaurant with my to go order in hand, I looked up and saw the nail sign on in an upstairs window across the street. It took me a while to find the right door to go into to get to the nail salon; however, I was successful. You enter in a small door that's nestled between a couple of businesses and have to take the stairs up to the second floor, where Athena Nails is located (along with some other small businesses). I went in half expecting them to actually be closed (despite the sign being on), or unavailable to take me at that time. I have my lunch in hand and needed to be back at my hotel in about 80 minutes. I was shocked when the woman said that she could take me immediately, but I readily agreed. It's a suite space, so there were two pedicure chairs, and 2 or 3 individual nail stations. One pedicure chair was already occupied, so I took the second. I only use regular polish on my natural nails (no gel, SNS, or acrylics). Even though I'd noted this at intake, I had to clarify this once in the chair as the experience seemed, we were headed for gel polish. Once clarified, my nail technician quickly, switched gears and went to collect colors that were close to the shade. I chosen from the options originally provided. I was surprised to see that the regular polishes were all from a luxury brand (Hermès) but it made the slightly higher price I was quoted make sense. I see the experience is no frills, because it was just a straight pedicure. None of the extra add-ons that lots of nail shops offer these days. No paraffin wax or hot stones or scented waters; no massage chairs; etc. The chair did have a basin for hot water to sit your feet in, but it didn't do anything special. The technician cared for my nails, painted them, applied some special oils to them, and then lotioned my feet. I was able to eat my lunch (a salad) as she worked. I got out of there on time to get back to my hotel. Once I got to my hotel, I was able to change clothes without ruining my pedicure. It was completely dry with just the products she used. I didn't need time with my feet under a fan or anything else. Here's the kicker: I am now, two weeks out from this experience, and my polish still looks fresh. My toe nails are just now starting to show the first sign of even growing out the tiniest bit. If I lived locally, I'd patronize this place again and again.

The benefit of going to a mid to low end nail salon located in a mall is the convenience of not needing an appointment. Therefore, when I am in need of an unscheduled mani/pedi, I will continue to play roulette, and take a gamble on Foxy Nails. Foxy nails has a huge selection of regular and gel polishes. I have not seen anyone getting nail art here, so I am not sure if it is offered. The cleanliness is OK. The overall condition has definitely deteriorated over the past few years with raggedy towels and tired massage chairs. Technicians do, however, use sealed tools and wear gloves, so I never feel like the salon is a health risk.

First trip, they worked on my manicure and pedicure at the same time, and were so thorough, I felt bad for how long they were spending on me. My manicure lasted probably 2 weeks, and the only reason it wasn't longer was because my nails grow too quickly. The second trip, about 1.5 months later, my toenails still looked almost perfect from the first trip. Their polish change prices are so reasonable and their service is awesome. The space was super clean, chairs looked new, bathroom was tidy and well appointed, and the place just kind of screamed luxe. I was greeted right away and the tech was available within a few minutes. The front was very clean and tidy. Things went downhill after that. The work station of the tech who did my nails was filthy - covered with dusty and crust. The longer I sat there, the more I saw and the more frustrated I felt. Tools like nippers for cuticles seemed to have been used on other customers with old cuticle on them. I'm so embarrassed that I didn't get up and leave. The tech used an efile to tear up my nail beds and then buffed them out anyway. This seemed to be a substitute for actually cleaning the old regular nail polish off. The nail polish application was sloppy with the tech applying way too much for each layer. No base coat was used, so my nail beds will be stained now. This tech applied the polish like it's gel and not like it's ordinary nail polish that needs to air dry. It's got bubbles and streaks and is cracking where the top doesn't quite cover the color. Especially strange was that I was asked to pay and tip before my service was finished. I won't be going back and I wouldn't recommend.
