After I had come back from Copenhagen last year, I couldnt wait to go return for the food. Luckily for me, Chef Bo Bech came to me to fill the void while doing a dinner at Bar Tartine with Chef Nicholaus Bala of Bar Tartine. Not having been able to catch Geist the first time, Im glad to have caught him and Geist's menu on the road as follows: -Day old bread with chestnut -Wafers of avocado with vaiar and almond -Raw zucchuni with pistachio and fennel pollen -Mushroom and cocoa bean dashi -Spinach with green strawberries, sea beans and wild herbs -Celeriac baked in sourdough with condensed buttermilk -Raw fried turnip and radish with garlic -Charred Beef Tenderloin -Potato mash and salted butter whey -Sorrel tart with chocolate meringue Like most of the progressive Danish chefs, Chef Beck is putting together some very interesting texture and flavor combinations. The use of just a few ingredients in both contrast and balance of others shines through particular dishes. Some were completely unexpected while things like Potato and Butter whey were very comforting and referenced even by non Danish palates. It's clear that Chef Bech is talented and has a knack for ingredient combinations. So if you're in CPH you should definitely put Geist on your list

Items Selected: Sourdough Rolls with Danish Butter and Fleur de Sel Enoki Mushrooms with Yuzu and Egg Yolk Sauce Salted and Dried Breast of Young Duck with Cherries Grilled Avocado with Green Almonds and Curry Ricotta Gnocchi with Fermented White Asparagus and Summer Truffle Mornay Charred Quail with Summer Truffle Zucchini Flowers stuffed with Cod and Pistachio Heart of Lamb with Red Grapes and Wood Sorrel Blackberries with Oellebroed Caramelized Bread with Vanilla Ice Cream Originally opened at Kongens Nytorv 8 in 2011, an enormous room with a trendy vibe not far from Nyhavn clearly a luxury available to Chef Bo Bech thanks to his years as a Celebrity Chef on a Danish cooking program, Geist is one of the most polarizing restaurants in all of Copenhagen amongst those who travel and talk about such things, some calling the menu an a la carte alternative to relæ or noma while others seem to loath the place for feeling like a club and offering flavors that are underseasoned or too 'simple' to warrant their price-tag. Booked in the middle of a downpour, one of three experienced during an eight day trip to the Capital in July, it was mere moments before the a 12h00 reservation that several tourists huddled beneath the canopy were forced to part in order for guests to enter the restaurant, a hostess who also acted as waitress leading them to tables at the furthest end of a room that would never fill past 1/8 over the next three hours of dining, in reality probably a good thing as the kitchen's expediting process is a mystery still to be solved with some items coming out hot-on-the-heels of that before it while others were subjected to wait times eclipsing thirty-five minutes. Without doubt a member of the 'New Nordic' way of thinking, though not as prone to foraging as Redzepi or Nørregaard nor as obsessed with processes as Puglisi, Bech's menu features a fairly substantial number of plates each day for lunch and dinner, the ability to build one's own tasting menu a novelty amidst Copenhagen's best restaurants but one that is welcomed for those willing to share or those with a fairly substantial appetite. Perusing the menu while bearing in mind that reservations were pending for dinners at both 17h00 and 19h30, it was ignoring comments from the server that eight plates would be 'too much food' that an order was placed, her mistake actually adding one more that was served free of charge and the afternoon starting out with three-bite Sourdough Rolls served warm with Salted Butter. Rather wishing a seat near the kitchen had been offered, the open counter assuredly more interesting than raindrops falling on an empty patio and bumping beets playing overhead, it was just as a party of ten took a seat across the monochromatic space that course one arrived, a tangle of blanched Enoki Mushrooms glistening with Citrus and Egg Yolk an elegant way to awaken the tastebuds and quickly followed by house-cured Duck Breast sliced thin amongst a light drizzle of Balsamic and halved-Sour Cherries. Somehow mistaking the word Avocado for Gnocchi, odd as the Server spoke flawless English, it was after a short pause that Bech's oft-photographed Curried Avocado with Raw Almonds arrived and eating far lighter than the average with an almost snappy texture and surprisingly light fragrance the dish was successful despite being slightly under-seasoned, exactly the opposite situation marring the Gnocchi that had actually been requested as the Dumplings were presented as a hide-and-seek amidst White Asparagus Tips beneath Truffled Mornay that was quite salty. Here hitting the first expediting snag, the fact that the large group was now receiving food along with a few other tables seeing a thirty minute gap before a simple grilled Quail with slices of Summer Truffle arrived, it was shortly after the Bones had been picked clean that the dish of the afternoon arrived, a trio of Squash Blossoms stuffed with Brandade in a pool of Pistachio Cream finding an elegant balance as the expected Fish flavor came across first only to dissipate quickly with a sweet and nutty linger. Opting against the Tartare presentations of 108, relæ and others when presenting Lamb it was instead with 1/8" thick slices of the beast's Heart gently smoked and mixed with Grapes and Wood Sorrel that savories concluded, the flavors somewhat redundant in the setting of the Duck and left to be thought about for some time as a dessert of Blackberries and Rye Porridge took nearly twenty minutes arrive with another thirty-five separating the hoppy dish from a thin slice of French Toast soaked in Caramel and topped with creamy Vanilla Ice Cream.

Stumbled upon this place entirely by accident, as were we wandering along in the area when hunger struck. Fancy restaurant with dim lighting and wild animal trophy heads lining up one wall. My husband was worried that we were dressed a little too casually, but it didn't seem to be an issue, there was a mix of casual, business casual, and slightly more formal diners. The place was booked up, but we were able to snag a couple of spots with the promise of a fast meal so that the upcoming reservation could be accommodated. Fast, efficient service (perhaps to get us out quicker). Innovative presentation of the dishes that not only pleased the eye, but the palate as well! The mushrooms were the highlight of our meal, and while the lobster and yuzu caught me by surprise, I was a fan of the dish. A little on the pricier side, given the small portion size.

This was our front row seat from the bar in the kitchen. I'd recommend it over a table.

Totally deserves five stars. We had the beef tenderloin with salad. Fantastic. Medium rare on the inside. Great flavor. Butter lettuce. We also had the mushroom egg yolk sauce dish. I hate egg yolk, but this was fantastic. The monkfish with the snow peas was also amazing. But this is my favorite, and this place's monkfish did not disappoint. At this. Very awesome. We sat at the bar, and literally had a front row seat to the chef and all of the staff in the kitchen preparing every dish with meticulous detail. We also had a spinach dish that was fantastic. Highly recommend it. Medium fortunes. The bread rolls were a little hard on the outside. My wife insisted that I add that detail. They were good, but just a little hard to bite. I guess that's probably a good bakery touch.

Semi-fancy restaurant with some really good and interesting small dishes.. I came here with a friend for lunch, and we were pleasantly full with various small plates.. After eating, we had rum and coffee - accompanied by candy flush.. A fun detail :) If you're ready to spend +2000DKK for a nice and interesting lunch with exceptional great wines, then I'd definitely recommend Geist. Plus, their staff was super professional and friendly!

Excellent food and atmosphere! Small but satisfying portions of various seafood and meat dishes. My wife and I split the avocado with caviar, the scallops with green asparagus, the young duck with kale, and cod in zucchini blossoms. Those four dishes were more than enough for us. Dinner was served with small fresh rolls, butter and coarse sea salt. The cocktails were amazing! We both got the 'lemon in lemon in lemon' cocktail which consisted of gin, fresh lemon, soda water and thyme. Then my wife had a rhubarb sour and I had a whiskey cocktail, which was also really good. We opted to sit outside. The front outdoor seating along the sidewalk was full, so we sat in the back courtyard. The back courtyard was cozy, intimate and heated. The servers were very attentive, and their timing was spot on. Definitely recommend for a nice dinner in Copenhagen!

A bit of bitter, pain and disappointment. All started Okay. You know you are in for an interesting meal when the service you are getting are actually less than what you would expect from a TGIF or Pizza Express in the UK for the price of about ten times more. With a table of five, we started off with a cocktail which was magnificent. I had a dry and well-balanced drink called "Cherry Popcorn" which was probably one of the best cocktails I've had. We were ill-adviced to have three or four courses each when two would have sufficed. The dinner followed with three extravagant (yes, expensive) dishes each. I started my meal with a lobster carpaccio which was rather delicious, a start to a downfall. The meal followed with an (overcooked) turbot with ravioli then, a rather strange suckling pig with a supposed mash that has dissolved into a congealed sauce. These were all still within bearable standards (with alcohol) until a rather unfortunate debate happened when a server named Stene insisted that my dessert, a Coconut sorbet with pomelo and matcha green tea was supposed to be bitter. I explained that my expertise as an asian living in Asia have informed me that pomelo does not necessarily have to be bitter. She insisted that is it how it should be, bitter, and made me feel like a fool thinking a pomelo can never be sweet, ever. I was never then compensated or given any form of apology, left hanging with disappointment. The experience I have had at the restaurant was then tinted with all bitterness and sourness given that it was not an economically priced restaurant at all, and one would expect good food or at the very least a very good standard of service. All in all, I was utterly disappointed with my evening and would not recommend having a meal at this restaurant beyond one dish and a cocktail.

Four weeks later and I'm still having very pleasant, and slightly naughty, dreams about the pork belly and truffle dish I had at Geist back in November (see photo). I'm pretty sure that night I had to redefine the term "foodgasm": claiming that my mind was blown would be a ghastly understatement. We ate in the bar, and had before us the scene of the omnipresent Scandinavian open kitchen to entertain and delight our senses throughout the meal. We used the opportunity to investigate what others were ordering; watching chefs set fire to various plates of food to create culinary masterpieces, and allowing ourselves to be wrapped up in the orchestrated chaos that is many a restaurant kitchen. Our cocktails were the art of well-trained mixologists (either that or fool-proof recipes, can't be sure), and every plate set before us was not only beautiful to look at, but an absolute thrill to eat. I love a restauranteur who mixes unexpected elements and challenges the senses to redefine flavor using the simplest of ingredients, and Bo Bech is definitely doing that here, without pushing the limits too far over the edge. I had a conversation last night with two girlfriends over dinner about most memorable meals eaten in CPH in the past year. Geist easily made it to the top of my list.

I have fond memories of Geist from when I was in Copenhagen. I met up with 3 drunk Americans (don't worry, I knew them) and they were causing all kinds of ruckus in this fancy pants restaurant. We tried all kinds of things on the menu, but I'll tell you my favorites: -pot roasted cauliflower with black truffle -potato mash with brown stone crab and salted butter -west coast turbot with fennel ravioli on gruyere -crispy artichokes with pork belly and black truffles -charred beef tenderloin with spinach The dishes are all meant to be shared and since they're quite small, each person would probably need to order 4-5 to be fully satisfied. The service was very friendly and we were well taken care of the entire night. We were taken care of so well that we just kept ordering wine without very much thought about the price tag. Luckily, our dinner reservation ran rather late and the kitchen closed on us so that probably helped out our wallets a bit. They also gave us cotton candy. We ate a little bit of it, but decided it would be more fun to make mustaches and beards out of it. It was a great dinner, all $700 of it.

I've enjoyed 2 excellent meals at Geist (lunch last year and dinner 6 weeks ago). Food and service were great. I made a last minute dinner reservation, and I was made to feel very welcome. Excellent Avocado with Caviar; Salmon; and Scallop and Boneless Chicken Wings with Lobster Sauce. I loved my dessert: Whipped Cream Pie with Brown Butter Ice Cream; I especially loved the caramel inside! I'm glad Geist's reservation system accepts solo guests at lunch. I wish their reservation system accepted solo guests at dinner.

We stumbled upon this place after walking arounf Nyvahn street and once we saw the menu, we had to go in . Their kitchen closes st 11 pm, so we had 15 minutes to place our orders. The hostess and server were very nice and accomodating and told us to just order all we want and to not stress out about the kitchen closing in 15 minutes. This was very nive of them and I really appreciated that. This place is a Scandanavian tapas place so everything is meant for sharing for atleast 2 persons. We ordered a bunch of things : 1) sweet onions with sesame seeds and sesame oil - very unique presentation, quite good and sweet and salty at the same time. Wont make you cry. 2) lobster tartar with yuzu dressing. - again very unique presentation. Served cold and quite what you wouldn't expect, presentation wise. 3) smoked eel with crisy green onions ( I Think). Super yummy and crispy onion bulbs 4) suckling pig with crsipy artichoke in black truffle sauce- my FAVORITE. I can eat this by myself.. Flavors are wonderful and melts in your mouth. Just try it when you visit. Trust me!!! Its a must! 5) grilled squid with balck truffles - just okay, would skip this one 6) white fish with fennel ravioli. - my 2nd favorite. Must order. Very unique presentation again 7) chocolate mousse- good and sweet 8) slice of mango fruit with coconut sauce and saffron- yummy , perfect for me because it was not that sweet 8) lemon in lemon with thyme drink- with gin ofcourse, yum, had two of these 9) mezcal sour- smokey and good 10) free cotton candy. - with lemon rinds and it was amazingly not sticky in your hands. The dinner was very expensive for 2 persons, costs us $300 but it was worth to have our first dinner date for 2015. Will definitely recommend and come here again. They also have a very nice decor and feel inside.

Geist, a very popular spot for foodies, is runned by the inspiring chef Bo Bech (check out hos Instagram account @bobech - amazing photos). I visited this restaurant in May and was immediately enthralled by the fantastic atmosphere. Large beautiful place with an nice pulse that gave a sense of luxury. Me and my company was diverged regarding the food though. Some of the dishes, or especially ingredients, was cooked to an absolute perfection, as for instance the asparsgus served with matcha powder. However, some dishes were quite dull... maybe due to our high expectations? Anyhow, if you want to eat exciting food that you don't eat on a regularly basis - then Geist is a good alternative for you. However, be prepared that it is quite expensive.

I feel like Geist doesn't get as much International recognition as it should, and compared to the other popular restaurants in Copenhagen. This was actually my FAVORITE stop in Copenhagen. The atmosphere. The flavors. The service. It all blew me away. I was dining (and traveling) alone so they placed me up at the bar overlooking the kitchen, which I appreciated. It's nice to have some entertainment when you don't have a dining companion. I also liked that when I asked the waitress for recommendations, she gave me a very well thought out and honest answer. I hate when I go into a place and they tell me everything is great. She actually gave me the house favorites and her personal favorites, and also told me what order she would have them served in based on the flavors - well done. I was a little disappointed by the limited wine by the glass options since I was dining solo and couldn't very well order a bottle for myself. Based on the recommendations, I started with the raw beef with creamy oysters and piment d'espelette. It was creamy and oily and just perfection. I almost went back the second night to order just this. It was my favorite of the evening. The next course was the spinach fried with walnuts and sorrel. The flavors were really nice on this as well. I mostly ordered it because I felt I hadn't had any veggies on my trip, but I wasn't disappointed with this course either. For my last course I had the turbot with fennel ravioli on gruyere. The fish and ravioli were cooked to perfection. The gruyere added a nice fattiness and richness to the dish. I couldn't have been more pleased. I also really appreciated the service. It was entertaining watching the chefs (I recommend sitting at the bar), the wait staff was knowledgeable and not afraid to make recommendations, and the runners always gave me a description of the dish as they were putting it in front of me. Also, the atmosphere couldn't have been better. It was large, modern, and dark. I give this 5 stars and a huge thumbs up!

We tried Grød at two locations: the Torvehallerne market and at 7Eleven. The market, I ordered the Oat Porridge which came with apples, roasted almonds and caramel sauce, my mom had the All In! and my dad had the oat waffle. All of us (mostly) left satisfied. My picky father loved his waffle. And I really enjoyed the porridge I had. The oats perfectly cooked, the apples and almonds gave it a nice textural contrast. Plus the caramel, which was more like a dulce de leche added the perfect amount of sweetness without being too sweet. My mom was a bit ambivalent because the All In was too sweet. But to be fair, All In includes all of their toppings. Including chocolate and caramel so her assessment was fair! The Grød at 7Eleven had this wonderful chia pudding, layered with yogurt, natural peanut butter, a berry compote and nuts and I was obsessed. So simple, yet so wholesome. I found a cup at the airport and proceeded to import it back to the States. Overall, it was definitely worth a visit (or 2) to have my mind blown. Grød may not have intended it but this lil Westerner is now leveling up her oats game thanks to their menu!

It was so good!), the truffle chicken (the chicken was cooked so perfectly and was extremely tender and juicy), and the linguine (super fresh and perfectly al dente with a rich sauce). The bread with whipped butter was also great. I think the butter had truffle in it, but I'm not positive. It was delicious. Brownie points sincerely for still being open at 1130pm and onwards until 2am... YES TWO AM!!…read moreAs someone who was rushing from the airport after landing at 1012pm, I truly appreciated that a local spot was still open... even though the streets were empty and we were the only table. I ordered the DANISH NATIONAL DISH and FRIED LIVER (I believe they are #19 and #20 on the menu). Interestingly, the server recommended something similar (another pork belly dish) over the national dish; stating it tastes much better and much softer... which I probably should have went with this recommendation since the national dish was TOUGH AS BONES. It wasn't crispy, chewy, or tasty. It was simply inedible. One couldn't even chew or cut through the meat... the side of skin on mini/small potatoes were simply boiled. The beet dish was delicious. The sauce didn't have much flavor (crazy how extra sauce costs 35 DKK more). The VEAL LIVER dish tasted better than the national dish ironically. Gave a tremendous portion. The potatoes were skinned. The gravy had some taste compared to the other sauce from the national dish. Decadent pickled cucumbers which provided a nice palate cleanser. Mushrooms gave a nice chew, a much appreciated and welcomed different texture. ***the bread given was not good at all*** ***it seems that water, even if it's from the sink or obviously bottled by them, costs money in any establishment*** SERVICE: Kind. Attentive. Enthusiastic. Spirited. Happy. Since it was our first meal in Copenhagen we were a tad blown away by the price tag of each meal to the point we thought it was a meal set. The server calmed down those nerves and reassured us that all dishes on the menu were à la carte. Loved the small talk he attempted :) VIBEZ: Still had Christmas/holiday decor haha. Great for a night out/date. Casual with a sprinkling of fine dining. No service fees included in the bill. Great for large groups. Located in the city. Didn't have a car; therefore, I cannot vouch for parking. Close walk from/to the metro though! Would I come back? No, but I am elated I can cross off trying the danish national dish on my bucket list. :)

Beautiful place and food. Excellent service! This restaurant deserves 5 starts across the board…read more The owner recommended Grillet laks which is Grilled salmon served with sautéed seasonal vegetables and tarragon sauce. The salmon it's self was cooked perfectly. Gently grilled on the outside and moist on the inside, and vegetables were perfectly seasoned. The sauce on the fish was an excellent touch. All in all, it was worth the $. He also recommended Carlsberg Pilsner. Beer that is popular in Denmark. I was tempted to get another one! And finally the desert. Wow, I would fly back to Copenhagen just for this! He recommended the Gammeldags æblekage (apple strudel), it was divine. Thank you for the excellent food and service. 10/10.

This restaurant is on "Restaurant Row" in the Nyhavn area. This restaurant was a recommendation,…read moreand I would recommend it too. There were outside tables, but it was a bit chilly, so we opted for the nearly deserted inside restaurant. We had a table near the window, so it was a great view. The restaurant was nicely decorated and the service was very friendly. I ordered the gravlax open-faced sandwich, which is smoked salmon (very similar to lox) on an excellent sour dough bread. I opted to skip the mustard sauce, but the sandwich was perfect. My wife had the potato open-faced sandwich, which consisted of new potatoes, organic rye bread, lemon mayonnaise (romaleid), fried onions and pickled pearl onions. She really enjoyed it, along with her Spritz drink. Denmark seems to be one of those countries, where you cannot order tap water. Fair enough. However, our water consisted of an open carafe (which I'm sure was tap water), for which we were charged 50 Krona ($8). This seems high for tap water.

Staff had a "I don't wanna be here attitude"... we were definitely a bother. Went for the burger,…read morecouldn't add cheese, staffed stated food was not made there, so no modifications. Settled on fried fish and shrimp croquettes (ok). We knew it was a tourist trap, but we were looking for better service. Great location on a beautiful day, if not for the excitement of being in the city... the staff could have destroyed it. On vacation, looking to order a drink, I was advised they only had what was on the menu... mind you, as you look around, the establishment next door was rocking a full bar! In my opinion, pick a trap with friendly inviting and help staff... not unless you like it that way!
