Soccer Post - Kearny

Fun Fact: five of the past team captains for the US Men's soccer team have come from the West…read moreHudson region of NJ. (So it's only fitting - and long overdue! - that there was a proper soccer store reigning in West Hudson.) I was legit shocked just how much stuff they have here. I walked in assuming "small shop, small inventory" but I was completely wrong. From shorts to a slew of balls (of varying sizes and clubs/countries) to jerseys (representing every major league around the globe) to sneakers/cleats to jackets to an entire wall supporting local teams (Thistle, Kearny and Paisley Athletic) even a "Ref's Corner" where you can pick up the dreaded yellow/red card set. And a really interesting feature (I hadn't seen before) - there's an enclosed "mini-makeshift pitch" that looks like little kids could go and run around to play a bit of soccer and/or you can try your new sneakers to see how they'd actually feel on turf. (I also eyed up a pretty sweet foosball table but I'm not sure if that was for everyone or just the staff while on break.) The owner is a great guy and the staff were phenomenal... they offered help but weren't pushy. They were excitedly talking about soccer teams/matches amongst themselves and when we went to the counter they couldn't have been more energetic or welcoming. (They were even good sports when I ribbed them for not stocking any AS Roma merch... just yet.) Roughly two miles from the Red Bulls Arena. About a mile from 'The Courts' in Harrison. Half-mile from the Kearny Scots Club. Soccer Town, USA (one of Kearny's official nicknames) now has a FIFA-approved (okay, I just made that part up) outpost where you can pick up pretty much whatever you need to get out and about for some footie. Granted - parking can be a nightmare but that shouldn't deter you from swinging by to check out what's what. "Chips on!"

We've shopped at Paragon for decades and always had good to great experiences there. The staff is…read morewell-informed, has integrity and the merchandise is of excellent quality. Tonight l had another great experience at Paragon thanks to the sensitivity and good nature of Mike R in the upstairs shoe and boot department. As a rule, my 88-year old husband doesn't like to buy himself new clothes. But after what feels like weeks in this polar vortex, with him stubbornly trudging and slipping through the snow in old rubber rain boots and a cane, l stopped hinting and put my foot down: we were going to buy him some warm, waterproof boots with cleats. Knowing that he might only put up with one outing, I decided to scout Paragon on my own, first. Mike R. advised me he had only one style of boot that fit what l was looking for and not many sizes left. When he came back with a size in the ballpark, l asked if he could hold it for me. Mike was blunt: he couldn't do any 24-hour holds with the stock so low, but he could hold it for two hours. I thanked him, explaining that if l bought these and presented them to my husband as a done deal he would never even try them on. But we'd be back, within the hour. When we arrived on the floor, Mike picked right up on the dynamic: this was not a customer for a hard sell. And so Mike was the soul of discretion. He kept a low profile, talking quietly and only to me and showed up just often enough to be helpful. He was patient, kind and l got the feeling he was enjoying the challenge of selling without ever even connecting with the guy trying on the boots. And Mike's strategy worked! We made the transition from my husband's original reaction to the only boots in his size ("l hate them!") to walking out with four pairs of socks and that same pair of warm, waterproof boots with cleats. I am deeply grateful to and frankly in awe of Mike R, Paragon boots department. Thank you!

The two ladies who work in the ski clothing department are amazing! They were super friendly and…read moreattentive. They showed me different options, gave helpful advice, and offered to bring me different sizes and base layer suggestions to try with my ski pants. Unfortunately, I forgot their names, but one was a middle-aged Spanish woman and the other was a young Black woman with blonde curls. They were there on Wednesday around 3:30-4:00 p.m. When I was finished, the Spanish lady even told me about the run club they host on Tuesdays. I really enjoyed my experience at the store because of them!
