Instead of trying to help or understand the issue, the employee I spoke with seemed to assume I wasn't being truthful about where or when I purchased the item. I was told that I may have bought it at another location, even though this was my first time ever visiting the store and I had purchased multiple items that day. The shorts still had the original tag and security device attached, showing they had never been worn. I wasn't asking for anything unreasonable--just hoping to exchange them for a size that fit after having to make an extra trip because the security tag had been left on. Mistakes happen, and I understand that. What left a negative impression was feeling talked down to rather than treated like a valued customer. A little understanding and customer service would have gone a long way.
