Prices are high for the serving size, hard to get refills for drinks. Food was average, there's better Mexican food in Ottawa.

I am loving this place. Every time we go I find a new favorite dish! And the Texas Margaritas hit the spot!

Checked out this Mexican restaurant that's pretty basic. Don Jose's is one of the many such places…read morein New Lenox. It has about what is expected which is margaritas along with burritos and tacos. Good enough. The prices are kind of high for being average as well as portions. Big restaurant with lots of room for groups. It's got a bar area along with the rest of it. There was more than enough space as there was hardly anyone in it though. Even with it being in the evening. We were the only ones at first then a few more came later. A few pretty good things here. It's about $11 for a margarita. Got the Prickly Pear and it was pretty good. They at least use strong tequila. It's about $16 for a burrito. We each got the Veggie Burrito, which is one of the few options without any meat. Comes with cheese and crema which I left off, but still had enough in it. There were beans, lettuce, and tomatoes and it came with beans and rice. For sure it's pretty okay for Americanized Mexican food. It's not authentic but it's still way better than Taco Bell junk. There's many other restaurants around here with the same kind of food at better prices meaning we aren't in a hurry to get back here soon.

The interior is modern, festive, and inviting, with a lively bar and an open, clean layout. Right off the bat, we were treated to complimentary chips and salsa, and let me tell you--this might have been the highlight of the night. The salsa was bursting with flavor (hands down the best I've had at any Mexican restaurant), and the chips were clearly fresh, not just poured from a bag. For drinks, we tried the Santo Horchata and the Coconut Margarita. Both were strong, balanced, and refreshing--no watered-down cocktails here. We ordered a spread of dishes to really test the menu: Tortilla Soup, a Chicken Burrito Bowl, and five different tacos--Al Pastor, Crispy Pork Belly, Shrimp & Chorizo, Tajin & Agave Chicken, and Carne Asada. * The Tortilla Soup was immaculate--rich, flavorful, and carrying just the right kick of spice. * The Chicken Burrito Bowl was generous and far superior in quality compared to chain restaurants trying to do the same thing. * And the tacos? Worth the hype. Here's how I'd rank them: 1. Crispy Pork Belly - an unexpected standout, tender and packed with flavor, elevated even more by the sauce. 2. Tajin & Agave Chicken - no wonder this one won Best Taco. 3. Shrimp & Chorizo - unique and hearty. 4. Carne Asada - solid and flavorful. 5. Al Pastor - tasty, but outshined by the others. All in all, Don Joses is easily the best Mexican restaurant we've had in New Lenox. From the atmosphere and service to the unforgettable chips & salsa, strong drinks, and outstanding food, this spot is a 10/10 must-try.

The first drink I ordered was delicious. Their signature old fashioned is made with mezcal and had a nice smoky flavor. The 2nd one was definitely off and the server mentioned something about it being different and that I should taste it. It was overly strong and it didn't have the same taste as the first. I just poured the ice from the first drink into it but I really should have sent it back. Cocktails are $10 during happy hour but otherwise they are $16 and not worth getting in my opinion. The happy hour guacamole trio was okay but there was no distinction between the three types flavor-wise. The ceviche presentation was nice but it also lacked flavor. The tacos were more flavorful but small. They were nicely presented. It is cutely decorated inside but the music made it hard to talk because it was too loud. I probably won't be back when there are better choices in Geneva for the same type of food. I want to give it another half a star but I chose to round down rather than up mainly for lack of flavor, bad 2nd drink and higher than necessary pricing off the main menu.

We started with a few drink specials..Ala Margarita and Altiro Old Fashion. Each drink was 10.00 and very good. For starters we tried the Al Trio Guacamole which all tasted the same. We also had their Al Ceviche which was very good in presentation but not much flavor. I also tried the Al Camaleon tacos which were 4 small tacos of grilled shrimp, bacon, lime, garlic aioli and avocado. Flavorful but small in size for the price. You definitely want to try to go for Happy Hour as their prices are high and portions are small.

Once we checked in with the hostess for our reservation we waited ~10 minutes to be seated and quickly greeted by our waiter Guillermo (so sweet and very friendly). We ordered our adult beverages (both very refreshing and tasty especially on a hot summer day) and flautas as an appetizer. The flautas are definitely big enough to share or as an entree. Guillermo provided great food selections and we decided on the quesabirrias and Molcajete. We were both silent for the first 5 minutes because we were enjoying our meal...the flavors were exquisite! Make sure to make a reservation...this was at 5:15 on a Saturday and it was packed! Walk-ins were definitely waiting for a table. Also be prepared that the noise level is a tad loud and the tables are close together.

Unfortunately today, the service was really bad. Liz, was our waitress and consistently showed me attitude, just saying no to things, etc. Just not a good experience at all. I am fine with hearing no, but there's a way to talk when you're hospitality well. On to the food. Red sauce cheese enchilada - good Green sauce cheese echilada - others loved it, but it's too tangy for me Guacamole - fine and better with fresh jalepenos added Veggie Tacos - meh.. probably the worst item of the day Veggie Quesadilla - it was fine to good Based on this trip, I think I would still come back and just hope to not have the same waitress. Btw, the rest of the staff, walking around were very nice and thoughtful, but how much do you really interact with them. So anyway, we'll see how it goes.
