After purchasing a condominium in a historic South End brownstone built in 1900, I soon discovered that despite all the turn-of-the-century beauty my new residence offered, it was woefully short on storage space. Thanks to Gary Barcus at GB Woodworking, that's no longer a problem. Gary designed and constructed a beautiful and functional floor-to-ceiling built-in wall unit in my living room. The unit spans the length of an entire wall, and includes wooden cabinets, glass-front display cabinets and open bookshelves. It was very important to me that the unit not be plain or generic, but that it maintain the elegant details of the early 1900s that are found throughout the brownstone. Gary listened carefully to my wishes, took measurements, then shortly thereafter, submitted to me a hand-drafted design that perfectly reflected what I envisioned. I approved the design, and he began the process of constructing the wall unit in his workshop. He used the highest-quality wood, glass, hardware and paint, and kept me informed of his progress along the way. After several months, the wall unit was finished and ready for installation. Gary and his apprentice delivered the components of the unit to my brownstone, then spent several days painstakingly assembling and installing it. They had to build around a fireplace in the center of the wall, and they did so seamlessly. Their attention to detail was meticulous, and the final result was spectacular. If I didn't know better, I'd think the wall unit was part of the brownstone's original 1900 construction. It's not just an addition to the room - it's part of the room. Gary is as much an artist and designer as he is a carpenter. Gary built bookcases for us in our living room and also in our master bedroom, both of which contain spaces for a television. He was very easy to work with, clear as to what he was proposing to do, and was happy to make minor changes during the planning process. He also had great ideas for how the end product should look. We found Gary after reading online reviews and we couldn't be happier with our decision. Gary built two custom made bookcases for our family room. The work is first rate. It instantly upgraded our family room and made it so much more functional. Gary is very attentive to details throughout the whole process. I hired G.B. Woodworking to create a built-in bathroom cabinet because no manufactured cabinets were the right size. The work included curved doors and six drawers as well as shelving. A beautiful framed mirror in birds-eye maple completed the project. Gary custom built a wall of floor-to-ceiling built-in cabinets and shelves in the living room of our duplex-style condo in late December 2012. The end result was fantastic. It looks as though it should always have been there and we have excatly what we wanted in terms of functionality and style. From the begining of the project, Gary designed the space to take into consideration our needs, provided a detailed drawing of the layout, which allowed us to visualize the space. He listened to our requests and came up with solutions to make the overall plan functional and very visually appealing. The design included taking into account a depth limitation on upper cabinetry due to a sliding glass door in close promity to the area where the built-ins were installed. The cabinet design was a craftsman/mission style. The entire project was completed in a very quick timeframe from start to finish, with Gary putting in long days to complete the installation over a 2-day period so that we could have it completed prior to the holidays. Gary had great attention to detail and built into his design trim elements to make the finished work look extremely high-quality. He returned to put finishing touches on the job and to custom build a television mount to allow us to mount the tv in one of the built-in openings. Our condo is slanted a bit (due to settling) and he was able to take this into account in the installation with great results. The finish on the cabinets was beautifully done with a white finish he applied to the cut wood at his workshop, which we are very pleased with. Because the finish was applied before installation, we were able to use and enjoy the cabinets immediately once they were installed. I would highly recommend Gary as a very skilled woodworker, extremely professional, highly reliable and responsive. read more
