Gaucho Pie Co. is a family-run bakery that serves up traditional Argentinian empanadas with a Toronto twist. I am a big fan of empanadas, especially the Argentinian ones, so this was a must visit.... Susan Arevalo and her siblings, Claudio and Pedro started the wholesale business making their mother's traditional empanada recipe. Now, the handheld turnovers pay tribute to their Argentinian culture and also the diversity of the city with over 20 different not-so-typical flavors.....from the Spicy Pork and Kimchi, which was inspired by their love for Korean food and the fact that they live in Korea town to the Jerk Chicken, which was added due to Pedro's affinity for spice, there's an empanada for any palate. We loved the dough and the fillings of all the ones we tried...it was a nice place to stop for a snack that you can share with friends. If you drop in, you can choose from any of their daily flavors, but if you want any flavor from their large varied menu, you need to order in advance and they will make it for you. This place deserves a solid 6 out of 5 rating. I've visited this spot many times over the last few months, tried almost each empanada flavor and never left disappointed. My personal favorites are their Pulled Pork, Ginger Beef, Pickled Jalapeno, Butter Chicken, Roasted chicken, Aloo Gobi and Roasted Mushrooms....basically I love each and everything on their menu. If you swing by make sure you get their alfajores cookies- I've tried at a few places and trust me, theirs are out of this world ...get at least 6 to savor! They also make awesome gifts! read more

I should have known that a place that chose a name that means "gaucho foot" in castellano would be terrible. Empanadas? Not these ones. These are pizza pockets masquerading as empanadas. Don't get me started! Oops! I did get started! The meat empanadas, which properly boast of pepper and olives, have no flavour, have the ingredients chopped into smithereens, and are are missing other common ingredients, such as raisins, which might have elevated these feeble attempts at the classic pampas' dish in terms of flavour and culinary grace. The star comes from the two empanadas that are hard to ruin: ham and cheese, and what they wrongly call fugazzeta. Ham and cheese is hard to ruin. Put it in, then bake. Fugazzeta is the name of a heavenly white onion pizza from Buenos Aires. The so called Gaucho Foot version was tasty, but missed the nuance of herby, oniony and umami cheesiness that makes the real fugazzeta stand out. It cheated Torontonians of the authentic thing. Funny to me because the word for cheese in Lunfardo (Buenos Aires slang) is also the word for someone really bad at something, and also for stinking foot. Which brings me back to the name choice for the Company. Of course, the dough for the tapas (pocket) was awful. Could they have done better research? For sure. The dough in empanadas is the neutral ground that hides the revelation of flavour of the filling. It tends to be crisp or softer, but never dull. More importantly, the outward sign of a real empanada is the edge, or "repulgue", a traditional indication of the cooks skill, or lack thereof. The repulgue for all these empanadas was a sure warning of the lack of skill of the kitchen. The meat one, usually done in a fold similar to a rope, was neither dopey nor elegant. Now...Empanadas are a classic dish with many variations. They have been influenced by different immigrant groups in Argentina. This probably accounts for the Kimchi and beef version. But the McDonalds flavoured one is one more example of unnecessary innovation. Had they done the basic flavours in a worthy, inspired variation, I would be game to forgive the experiments. But when every one of the versions turns out to be mediocre...I need to send these amateurs back to do the proper research both for fillings, repulgues, and tapas. Sorry guys! read more

I came by this little shop as I ended up landing on the page on instagram. The photos enticed me to come by and try it. I purchased their beef and red peppers, butter chicken, chorizo, and jerk chicken. They were all sooo delicious! My favourite was the chorizo! I ended up turning back and buying more. Where to begin: Customer service 5/5. Friendly and efficient. Food 5/5! We didn't get a chance to order ahead and ordered from their daily menu... and OMG. Amazing!! We got the Traditional, Pulled Pork and Buffalo Chicken. The dough is perfect, not thick. Nice and thin and chewy. They bake theirs, so it's not greasy. Ingredients were good and everything tasted excellent. In order to try flavors that they aren't offering daily, you need to order ahead, which I plan to do for next time, since I'm definitely coming back and can't wait to try more! read more

The empanadas are delicious. I appreciated that they labelled in the box what each one was, otherwise I'd have no idea which one was which. My favorite, turkey dinner. The mushroom had a bit of spice to it. They were also pretty to look at. What could be better, I would've liked more frozen options. I came for frozen, but they only had two varieties so then opted for baked ones instead. I would've also liked it if frozen had a bigger discount than baked. So what is a Gaucho. Apparently an Argentinian cowboy? Better ask someone more knowledgeable. read more

I was in the neighborhood to get ice cream and came across their cute little sign selling Empanadas! Though mind you, i am not a big fan of empanadas as I usually find them flavourless! I was curious, so went to hunt for the little shop! So glad I did, because I got to a chance to come across the best tasting empanadas I've ever had! Honestly its even better than the ones I've had in Argentina! Guess if I can't go to Argentina might as well bring Argentina to me! The fillIng is what makes this little empanada shop so amazing! They have the most interesting and creative fillings! Usually they have 6 daily types. 4 meats and 2 vegetarians. On this day there was Beef & Paquillo, Bulgogi, Pork & Kimchi (my fave!), butter chicken (another one of my fave), Roasted Mushrooms (another one of my fave) and Spinach, Potatoes & Peas! I actually meant to order one of each (of their meat ones) but the lady misunderstood and got me one of each flavours so I got 6! They are $2.75 each, when I got home I wondered why I was charged $16.50! When I got home, I opened the box there were 6! So glad she misunderstood because I regret not getting more after polishing them off! You can also pre-order their other flavours! This place is too delicious to be kept a secret! This hidden gem has some of the best empanadas I have ever tried. They have plenty of different flavours to choose from and you can also take them to go to heat up at home. We have been coming back whenever we are in the are and highly recommend. Big Mac sauce empanada is a must try! Service is great and it's too bad there is not much seating space. read more

Special ordered 4 flavors: Gaucho/Saltena/Butter Chicken/Mushroom $30 for 12. Had their alfajores (8x$1.25) and a $5 Tres leches cake. Got 2 sauces: chimchurri/not so spicy at $1.50 each. Overall, the empanadas were nothing special. Not very flavorful. Dough was boring, not flaky, plain tasting. I would buy the alfajores and the Tres Leches AGAIN. They were good. Crumbly. Mildly addictive. Not too sweet. Tres leches cake was good too. The sauces were unforgettable. Not worth the $3; Did not enhance the flavor of the empanadas. read more
