Very disappointing experience over the Fourth of July weekend. Visited this hotel with our two adult sons and rented the largest room on the property, the efficiency suite. We were under the impression that it had two queen size beds and a pullout sleeper sofa. The pullout sleeper sofa was uneven and uncomfortable for one person to sleep on so we ended up sleeping on the two queen beds. One of the queen beds was delivered with stains all over the sheets. It was clear that the bed was used, and the sheets had not been changed before we were given the room. The breakfast experience was all microwaved food. They had made an effort to put bacon, sausage, eggs, and potatoes on the table. However, everything was microwaved and really un appealing and in some cases uneditable. Overall a very disappointing experience we paid $360 for one night. We definitely had the expectation that the experience would be a little bit better. This was our eighth trip to Salida. We have stayed in a number of properties. This was our first and last time at the Gateway Inn. I recommend you spend your money elsewhere for much better service, hospitality, and accommodations. read more

After flying three hours and driving another three, I couldn't wait to pass out in a bed. When I landed at Denver I received a call from Gateway saying that the front desk would be closing at midnight and that they would be leaving my keys outside for me, which was nice, but concerning considering every booking website said this hotel had 24 front desk. I knew I was arriving late and picked this place for that reason. The rooms are very small, but quaint. The water pressure is okay. The bed is a little firm and the pillows didn't work out for me. There is only a single lock on the doors and there is a knob you can spin that rotates "do not disturb and make room" on the outside of the door for house keeping to see. However, mine was broken. So I was woken up at 8am by housekeeping both mornings which was irritating. The ac unit in the room was very finicky and worked when it wanted to. Overall, you get a clean room with a mini fridge and microwave. The location is great to everything in town. The cost is appropriate but a little high for the quality. Be cautious as all units are outside, corridor style. The stairs are very noisy and unfortunately like any other hotel you can't control the volume of the other guests staying near you. One of the nicest rooms we've ever stayed in in. Very plush bedding, nice tile and carpet, very good staff eager to please the customer. Totally unexpected for such a small town. We needed a last minute change and they bent over backwards to get us accommodated. They have an outdoor enclosed hot tub which was perfect temperature despite being 10 degrees outside. They almost ruined my wedding night. We booked their honeymoon suite. When we arrived the night of they claimed that our card declined, they tried calling us, and they resold our room after 2 hours which is their policy. We never received any calls from them and our card had more than enough funds on it. I think what really occured was that some tourist came and offered them extra cash to give our room to them and they did because they are greedy jerks. Do not book here, this is the second time I have tried to reserve a room here and the second time they cancelled my reservation the day of. Completely unreliable and unprofessional. Not worth the headache of trying to find last minute bookings when our town is full. read more

For inexpensive place to stay in Salida, it gives the feel of excellence. Super clean, nice room with a beautiful tile backsplash in the bathroom area. Plenty of great amenities, towels, a hot tube, microwave, and fridge. Lovely breakfast in the morning, plenty of choices so there's something for everyone. The room was clean but the ice is way across from where our room was. We got in the hot tub, which was so full of chlorine we had to get out because it was burning. The whole place has been just renovated. Brand-new furniture, new mattresses and carpets ! Freshly painted ! This place is getting better and better. PS to people concerned about wifi. I never had issues, however consider this is a mountain town. It not up to the owner how good internet is, it's the Company that provides the service. And why would you be concerned with wifi ? Sent here from another hotel - the town was very booked! We came into town in the early evening on a weekday without a reservation, not realizing that there was a major event in a few days for kayakers. The town was booked pretty solid! After stopping at several hotels, the last one called and talked to the Gateway Inn front desk and secured us a reservation and we drove down the street to check in. I am always a little leery of 'motels' because sometimes you get a hidden gem but sometimes its a nightmare. Not having a choice we checked in and was given a 2nd floor room. This hotel has no elevators - warning to you if you have heavy luggage! We did, and I nearly popped a few vertebrae moving a suitcase up the stairs. Upper floors are definitely not ADA accessible. The room was good - thank goodness - and surprisingly quiet. Breakfast was OK. Would I stay here again? Maaaybe - but I would make sure I had a 1st floor room and reserve ahead of time. read more

Do yourself a favor. DO NOT STAY HERE. You will save lots of time and money. We booked here when the road was closed to go further north for our original hotel. I made a huge mistake. I was charged twice (three times at one point) and had my account overdrafted for a crappy redone holiday inn with HORRIBLE customer service. It has now been FOUR DAYS of consistent calling to be told consistently that I need to speak to the manager and she would call me back. Turns out the manager has no set schedule and shows up whenever she wants... I just feel bad for the staff and hope the owner is aware the manager isn't there to do her job. A woman named Maria even actually yelled at me over the phone when I implied the charge was on their end. Apparently she felt so defensive (she was the one who checked me in) she felt the need to yell at me that they've looked into it and it's not their fault. Needless to say the manager has STILL refused to call me back. What does this mean for regular travelers even if they *don't* double charge you? If you have ANY issue, there will be no management there to help you. Seriously, don't waste your time and money... I'm having to fight the charge through my bank and it will not be refunded for weeks. I'm just glad they're reporting this hotel to the Better Business Bureau. Now for the rest... The rooms are remodeled and look like the pictures but the hotel overall was NOT clean. When you walk in, you immediately get a whiff of something that smells moldy. The sheets had stains on them and the towels were so overused and unclean that they scratched your skin and left you with a sticky feeling. I also saw a roach while I was taking a bath in the mini-suite's ONLY redeeming factor -- a decent jetted tub. The location is right off the highway which means you can hear EVERYTHING going on outside. Every car. Not to mention that the hotel had some kind of large group from Oklahoma in with teenage kids who were running up and down stairs, screaming, playing in the lounge/fitness area, blasting music, and thumping on doors. This might be fine if the hotel was built to keep some sound from outside out... but no, you can hear every footstep, car, and voice outside. Definitely a 3 star hotel at MOST for their $180 per night price tag and poor quality. But their uncleanliness, lack of accommodations (they didn't even have toiletries because they let one group take them all), and rude staff, this brought them down considerably. One look at the room, and I took my key back to the front desk and left. The person there didn't apologize- instead I got some attitude. Not much, but some. No apology was forthcoming..... . The second person was worse, though.. And I'll leave it at that, because my Mom taught me to not say anything about someone unless its something nice! I wound up calling the credit card company to be sure they didn't charge my card, after I saw how dirty the room was. But the worst of it all was a staff that, well, felt like there was anger, or rage, or something right under a very very thin veneer. I didn't feel at all comfortable staying there. If I could give them zero stars I would! We have stayed in hotels and inns all over during numerous road trips and this is by far the worst...which is saying a lot! 1. The non smoking room has an ashtray on the table and reeks of years of smoke. Management was "shocked" and could do NOTHING. Shocker. 2. The cleaning crew just walked into our room at 9am. No knock. And since they have no do not disturb signs...again management said sorry and they would "talk" to her. 3. Oh and we paid $370 for two nights. So the quality is NOT on par with the cost. The room here was great and easy to get to. A four minute drive to downtown Salida. The room was very clean and comfortable and brightly decorated. My one recommendation is if you are a light sleeper make sure your room is not near the metal staircase. Otherwise you will be awakened by what sounds like a steady stream of giants thundering by. The hot tub has a cute little wooden building right in the middle of the parking lot. It was however more lukewarm than hot, which could be expected on a night in the teens. This is a simply average motel, with extremely rude and unreasonable owners. My wife and I were kicked out of the motel at midnight on July 14, after being woken up at 11:30PM by one of the owners banging on our door and screaming at us. Our offense was that we had plugged our electric car into a 120V, 20 amp circuit (drawing 12 amps at about 800 watts). We had been plugged in for five hours, using slightly less than 4kwh of electricity, which cost about 60 cents. No circuit breaker had tripped, and there was no danger or damage to the motel. Rather than simply asking us to unplug (which we immediately did), the male owner (Ziggy) was screaming, telling us he was going to call the fire department and the police if we did not unplug in two minutes. Next, his wife (Elizabeth) called us in the room, and told us they were going to turn off our circuit breakers for the night. I told her that if she did that, I would have to write a negative review of the motel. This enraged her, so she demanded that we leave the motel immediately, otherwise she would call the police. I told her that was a good idea, so the Salida Police were called. After some discussion with a very polite and apologetic police officer, we were evicted (with a full refund) at about 12AM. This was despite the fact that the owners knew we did not have enough range to drive home that night and that there were no vacancies in any other Salida motels (because of the Colorado Brewer's Rendevous). Luckily, a nearby RV campground (where we had a previous reservation to charge at 240V and 40 amps the next morning) let us check in early and charge, while we tried to sleep in the car. If you read other reviews of this motel, you will see plenty of evidence of the owners being unreasonable with guests. In the motel owner's defense, I did not get explicit permission to charge my car first, although I did try to get permission in an e-mail and a phone call. We stopped in here after a long day of hiking at around 11pm. The owner was super nice. They offered to cook my friend boiled eggs when they heard he was too cramped up to even check in. The room was clean and pretty standard. Nothing too fancy. Clean bathrooms. Fresh towels. It was nice. The TV selection was decent, a premium channel or two. Checkout was at 11am though a sign inside said 10am. I'd come back here due to the great location, cheap price, good quality, and friendly service. read more

Great location in Salida. Check in was easy! Note: they don't allow pets (just in case you didn't read somewhere else). The rooms have been updated recently and have really pretty decor. The bed was comfortable and while the room was on the small side, it it was comfortable as well. Their breakfast is pretty standard for a continental breakfast (waffles, bagels, fruit, cereal, etc.). We ate pretty late in the morning (845am when breakfast is from 630am - 930am), everything was well stocked like it had just been replenished. Best Motel ever! I gathered that they were still mid remodel but the entire upstairs was finished (including my room). The new decor is very modern without being over the top. Bed was very comfortable, 40" hdtv (no comment on the cable, i just plugged my laptop in). The hot tub was extremely nice, brand new and high end with multiple massaging seats and built in Bluetooth speaker setup. I want one. My only complaint was the wifi was slow, not allowing netflix. read more

This was a last minute selection for am overnight trip and it was a disappointment to say the least. The front desk guy was very friendly and quickly set us up then it started off with difficulties getting our key cards to work after checkin- it took three trips back to the front desk to have them reset the key cards. We had booked a room with a single queen bed but what we got was a double bed. Although the room was VERY clean and was obviously newly renovated the overhead lamp in the room wasn't working at all. When we went to dinner and came back again the key cards had stopped working and this time it took four trips to the front desk before someone came over to change out the battery of the reader which also didn't work so they issued us another set of key cards (this was a continuing issue throughout our stay as well as others stays apparently). When my friend went to watch the game on the lobby tv and came back before bedtime i had to let him in because once again the key card had quit working. The next day after heading to breakfast we came back to checkout of the room and found that the keycards were disabled at 1030 (checkout was 1100). So after two trips back to the front desk we finally got into the room when the front desk guy let us in with his master key card because he couldn't get the newly issued card to work in our door. If you don't mind numerous trips to the front desk to get key cards rekeyed this is the place for you but for convenience this place is a red hot mess. We had hoped to find a place we could come back to on subsequent trips to Salida but this won't be it. read more

DO NOT STAY HERE!!! They have the most arrogant and rude owners where absolutely nothing is their fault. A friend and I got back to hotel around 1:30am and our key stopped working. We called their office number and it went to voicemail. We called seven times and no one picked up!! We were two young girls stranded outside our room and no one was at the front desk. As an hour went by, we called again and someone FINALLY picked up and they told us that we should have left a voicemail and they would have come out ASAP! So they would quickly listen to voicemails, but not pick up when the phone was ringing? The next morning we asked to speak to a manager about our experience last night. They mocked us and rolled their eyes after we mentioned we were scared and concerned about not being able to get into our room. They called us liars for the amount of times we called them, but then said they heard the phone ringing but that they didn't have great service. Lies after lies and excuse after excuse regarding their terrible customer service. There was no apology either for putting two young women in danger in the middle of the night with their faulty key system and not being available when we had a problem. Do not give them money! So many better places to stay in Salida without dealing with jerks at this one. Would never stay here again and will be sharing this experience to others to warn others so they aren't in this mess. read more

We booked through Hotels.com and snagged one of the last rooms in Salida near the 4th of July. The rooms are newly remodeled and very clean. Breakfast was convenient to grab and go to get our day started. I grabbed a packaged chocolate muffin and my husband grabbed a yogurt & a boiled egg. He was mtn. biking the morning we checked out. The Gateway provided him with a late check out time at no additional cost to better accommodate our needs. read more

Not a bad place to stay for the price. Most obnoxious thing was having housekeeping knock on the door three times in less than 15 minutes. When we informed the front desk that there was no 'do not disturb' sign in our room and the disturbances were unacceptable, we were told you are supposed to inform the front desk upon check in that you don't want housekeeping coming. I guess hotels work differently in Colorado, but that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. read more

DO NOT STAY HERE IF OTHER OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE! I have stayed here many times over the years, typically with nice accommodations. I recently paid nearly $300 to stay in the family suite, the largest room in the hotel. The stay was terrible and my attempts to talk to the owner or manager about it have led nowhere. The air conditioning unit tripped and we had to get up every 15-20 minutes all night to hit the reset button. Keep in mind it was very hot that night and air conditioning was needed. There was no one at the front desk after 11 p.m. so we couldn't do anything about it. First thing in the morning I went down to the front desk and told them about the situation. They argued that I should have contacted their maintenence people... which I said was not possible because no one was at the front desk. After arguing with me that the unit was brand new, I offered for them to come to the room to see for themselves. Sure enough, they came by the room and witnessed the air conditioning unit trip the breaker and needed to be reset. I WAS TOLD THE MANAGER WOULD CALL ME THE NEXT DAY. Nearly a month after my stay I still have not heard from the manager or owner. I have called and tried to talk to the mystery manager that is never there. I've been told 1) she only comes in every once in a while 2) she's on vacation 3) she got your message and will call you when she has a chance. My last call resulted in the lady on the phone telling me it sounded like I was "blackmailing" the hotel by threatening to leave negative reviews. What I was trying to do was give the hotel a chance to make things right. It's been nearly a month and I've heard nothing, hence this review. read more

I would give this hotel 0 stars because the people that work here are thieves. I accidentally left a pillow that cost me 60 bucks and after calling, the woman at the front desk told me that it wasn't there. I told her that her employees must have stolen it then because I certainly don't have it and she said "I assure you my employees are not thieves." I'm just infuriated about this. I guess it's my fault for leaving the pillow but I paid close to 190 bucks for 2 nights and to have my property stolen because it was nice is absolutely ridiculous. If you do stay at this hotel make sure you don't bring anything of value or don't make the mistake of leaving anything of value because the employees have sticky fingers. read more
