Great breakfast and sandwiches. BLTs & crispy fries are delicious. Service is good, short wait times, if any.

So I took my Grandma here for dinner Friday night. (Her choice) We were seated promptly and the guy who greeted us was very kind. And this is where the compliments end. Our waitress Tina with blonde hair was down right rude. She took didn't really greet us, no smile nothing. Took our order and left. Brought our food. And left. Never asked if we liked it. Never checked to see if we needed anything completely ignored us. I had to ask the host for more tarter sauce. I had to flag her down for the bill. I did over hear her complain to other customers that she was too busy and didn't feel good. I understand what it's like to work and not feel well, but have some compassion for your customers. We didn't put you in that situation. I mentioned something to the man who checked me out, and the women with dark hair, but they didn't seem to care. Hopefully next time she just calls in if she isn't feeling well instead of taking it out on her customers. Management should listen when one of their customers complain instead of brushing them off. read more

We go here once or twice a month....Have never had problem with their food, wait staff, etc. Have never been rushed as some people have stated. Their bread comes with dinner meals or you can ask for it. Yes, there is always an older crowd in the morning. They have a breakfast special until 11am I think for $2.99 so of course it's going to be busy! And quite often I see people who request to be seated in the area that has the waitress who makes wisecracks. I asked someone why...their comment because she makes their day....She gets them to laugh, but she is also compassionate and will take her time with a person who is having trouble deciding. They have a wide selection of menu items. And alot of restaurants don't have soup near closing time. So it's just not there. In regards to the decor I call it homey....why change something if it make the customers happy? And yes the bathroom needs an update, but I wouldn't call it seedy. It just needs attention. I've never had my hot food come to me warm consistently hot all the time even when they are packed. Have never had a problem with my salad being watery and my blue cheese dressing was perfect. Michelle waitress was very rude. She talked to another table avoiding us early in the morning when place wasn't busy for about 15 minutes. When I finally called her to the table, she became rude and refused to serve us storming off. I called Peter the owner and he did not seem to be concerned even hung up on me when our conversation was not done. I called back immediately and they said he was gone which was a lie. I come here at least once a week with my family. They have a great selection of dishes, and the soup is always homemade and delicious. Coffee is neverending. Daily specials are a great value, I always end up bringing some home. The place is cozy and casual, good place for large groups, and kids enjoy it too. Lots of parking available as well. Our waitress wasn't very attentive, she forgot one of the items we ordered and we hardly saw her throughout the whole morning. When we were visibly done (empty dirty plates all stacked, leftovers packaged, drinks empty) we had to ask another employee for our check because the waitress was no where to be seen, then even after he told her, it took another few minutes. When she finally came to give us the check, she came in between us and decided to grab all of the dirty dishes first, with the check still in her hand, and then she just kind of dropped it on the table for us since her hands were full. The food was mediocre, nothing was that good. Omelette was thin and bland, sausage links tasted like brown and serve sausage. The American fries were so burnt on some pieces that they crumbled from being so crispy-they were inedible. Yet the hash browns were really undercooked. Pancakes were decent, no complaints there. Country fried steak was soggy and the gravy was very gelatinous, barely had any sausage in it. The scrambled eggs looked like an omelette with nothing in it. The warm cinnamon roll was horrible. Came to the table late because she forgot about it, it was a perfect round shaped "roll". It looks like it was made in a muffin pan due to the shape of it. And it just had a small drizzle of icing on it-seemed more like a danish than a cinnamon roll. Flavor wasn't very good either, it definitely tasted store bought. Pretty sure the only employee working was actually the owner, while the 2 waitresses just talked near the kitchen. Will never go back to this restaurant. read more

Went to Gateway for breakfast at high noon. I ordered the French toast with coffee. Coffee was excellent, French toast was good. Service was good but abrasive, waitress was nice but likes to insult, put down, and make fun of customers. Believe me when I say I am in no mood at anytime for insults either provided by me or at me. And I refuse to pay for same..!!! I have a mighty short fuse, and very hard to ignite. But the joke she made about doing bad things to the food at the table next to us while the customer went to the restroom almost lit it..!! I have enough nightmares and daymares about others preparing my food, I don't need verbal confirmation from the staff, but thanks for the heads up..I won't be back..!! read more

Always a breakfast favorite. They are quick and their food is very reasonably priced. The biscuits and gravy is pretty good. I also really like their skillets with hash browns instead of the American fries. Most of the staff is friendly and prompt. read more

Have had mixed results here but decided to try it again. Food was decent but the service was awful. Waitress passed by many times without acknowledging us. Asked for a soda refill which was brought. When we finished I asked for a to go cup for my remaining soda and was told I would be charged for it. Excuse me? Charge me for a soda I already paid for? Ridiculous. Went here for breakfast. Food was barely ok. Sausage was luke warm. Ordered a German Apple pancake and have ordered them several times before passed a small off as a large My daughter ordered a grilled bacon and cheese sandwich and was told they couldn't make it. I spoke to the asst manager and was told the owner went on vacation and so did the kitchen. Will not go back and we had a party of 8. The German apple pancake and sausages were luke warm. I Only go there for breakfast because it is close to home and the coffee girl keeps your cup full. The servings are too large with breakfast potatoes. They are never cooked all the way through. Eggs get returned alnost always. Been going there for years Saturday and Sunday. Now once in a while because I got tired of complaining. Almost as if the cook does it deliberately or doesn't care. Poor waitresses say they tell the cook all the time. Why do they ask how you want your eggs when it does not matter. He puts what he wants on your plate. Had enough and we try many other places in town. Gateway prices are no better so nothing ventured nothing gained. Another stop of "who has the best breakfast in Kenosha" mission. Met a friend here who swears that for price alone, well worth a visit. Family owned, clearly well maintained, friendly service. Breakfast fare. Basics. Pancakes, egg dishes, waffles etc. Big portions. Had the basics of eggs over easy, hash browns and toast. I asked for rye. I'm pretty sure it wasn't rye. This place is "OK." It is your regular breakfast place...mostly for the older crowd and it gets packed, especially on the weekends. Every time I go, I get the usual "Denver omelet." When it comes so size and seating. Gateway is as big as it comes for a diner. The menu is expansive and includes items that you would expect from a Greek owned family restaurant. While visiting Kenosha we found this traditional dinner. The service was fast for it being a Sunday with the large rush of people after church. Our server had to be reminded for drinks otherwise we got everything. We did have a larger group with four adults and three kids. I had the 1/2 pound burger(Gateway Superburger) and added fries an onions. It was strange that the burger comes with soup, but adding the fries made it only $6.99. All I can say is wow to that price!! The restaurant brought me back twenty years and to eating out after church while visiting my grandparents. This not the place for a foodie to come and rave about their meal to all of their friends, however the establishment brought me back to a different time in life which was great! If you are against your typical greek restaurant family dining, this is not the place for you. It has everything from typical breakfast to wraps to meatloaf, etc. My favorite thing about Gateway is their delicious soups-nobody in kenosha can compare. The downside is depending on the waitress you can leave having a really poor experience. Cannot begin to tell how good this place is. Peter (the owner) keeps the place hopping and busts his behind himself. Wait staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and will go out of their way to make your experience great. Food is top notch, especially the breakfast items ( my favorite). I was outright shocked when I saw the rating and other reviews for this restaurant. I am extremely picky and Gateway Cafe is my favorite restaurant. I have never had a bad dining experience here, but then again, I go in with the expectations of a family restaurant and come out pleased every time. There is always a manager on site, the restaurant is modern looking, the busing staff brings you water right away and never lets dirty dishes sit on your table. The prices are good and the food is wonderful, for a family restaurant. Are some of the servers quirky? Sure, but that is what I love about family restaurants. Is there a sea of white hair amongst the diners? Yep, but the crowd moves through quickly for younger people to dine without a crowd. Overall it is a great place, well managed, and good food! P.S. Our waitress was at another table talking about how anti- Hispanic she was, but the funny thing was... is that her whole section was a bunch of Hispanic people! Her bills are being paid by the people she hates most! But I guess I would be angry at the world, if I was a 50/60yrs old waitress working for tips to pay my bills. Maybe she should think about her comments and realize she should be grateful for these "Hispanics" that are her paying bills!! I told the owners son and replied with oh she is talking to her family. The menu offerings and portions are very "Denny's-like" so if you like Denny's then you'll likely enjoy this place. Very adequate portion sizes, and on my 6 or so visits there service has been predictably poor. The biggest downside to this place is that after you leave you'll notice that your clothes, hair, etc all smell like kitchen grease. I'm sure most of us have been into restaurants that give you that smell on your clothes after you leave and this place ranks right at the top of causing that effect, so just be prepared. Prices are again typical for this type of food-fare with average entrees being in the $5-$10 range. Foodwise I'd give them a 4 or 5 but their service and after-smell definitely bring them down a full 1 to 2 points. read more

Horrible experience. My wife and i went there for breakfast and the server was horrible. All she wanted was cream cheese in her omlet and the waitress refused. Even though they have cream cheese she would not let us get in the omelet. Plus last time they did it for us. She said i have been here 18 years and they will not do that. What happened to taking care of the guest. We did not ask for anything that they did not have in the restaurant. And the server extremely rude. Someone that has been there that long and treated us like that, is not promoting future business. I don't think that i will return and will tell others of my bad experience. read more

Came in for the AYCE fish fry. Started with the soup (chicken rice) - excellent. Bread arrived - showed evidence of having been frozen prior to thawing out. Nasty texture. The worse part was the fish. Very dry as if it had been frozen for too long. The deep fryer couldn't bring back any moisture to the fish. Potatoes were fried in old, possibly rancid oil. I expect better quality in a restaurant. I know Gateway Café can do better. They have in the past. What's up? read more

Food was passable, but not great. I ordered the broasted chicken and it was way overcooked, dry and nearly burnt. I ate it anyway as I had to wait 25 minutes for it in the first place and the party I was with nearly finished their food. They don't have a senior menu but they state on their menu that they offer a 10% senior discount on everything but the specials. None of us had specials and when my husband paid the bill they did not discount the 10%. Evidently, they don't give you the discount unless you ask, and I just hate when places do that. My husband is definitely a senior, you can tell by looking at him but is also forgetful, so the least they could do is give the discount. I should have gone with him I guess to remind him. This place should be more generous than that. Also one hostess was dressed in shorts and a tank top which I thought was quite inappropriate. One of the waitresses scared the heck out of me a couple of times as she yelled across the room to others. She needs to be talked to. Not my "go to" place anymore when in Kenosha to visit our grandson. We'll find another. read more

We eat at this restaurant at least 2 - 3 times a week. Breakfast is always great here and the $2.99 special weekdays is the best. Love their hash browns. Most of the soups are pretty good. Love the hot bread. Some of the suppers include dessert. This is just a great all around family type place. There are a couple of snappy waitresses that are fun and we enjoy. If something is wrong, they will make it right. Very nice prices and a good size menu! read more
