Now that I'm all settled I decided to try the Intro to Sewing class ($80: supplies included) here & I am SO glad I did!! Diana Rupp, the owner was absolutely amazing. She was so friendly and open! I showed up there with absolutely no knowledge of sewing or how to work a sewing machine. But if you come with interest and an excitement to learn, you'll enjoy it. She gave us hand outs with everything we needed to know, took us through all supplies for basic sewing, taught us the parts of the sewing machine and how to thread a sewing machine. I didn't even know there was a whole process even before beginning to use one?! Lol. She went at our pace, helped us each time we made a mistake, all while having a regular conversation. None of us ever felt left behind or stressed. I was beyond excited when the class was finished. I bought some supplies from her store and even Diana's sewing book (which I highly recommend if you're dedicated). I can't wait to practice on this new hobby and make it my own! They also have tons of other classes available if you want to learn other techniques. Already eyeing the next class I'll be taking: embroidery :)) Love love loved my experience!

She goes over threading step by step and gives you some great techniques and advice to take home with you so that you can practice. The classes are very small, so if you have questions, she's available. The two hours flew by. I left the class feeling very confident in what I learned (a little too confident, telling people I can take on those mofos on Project Runway!) I can't wait to take another class.

They were well taken care of, exposed to different art mediums, and encouraged in their choice of artworks. I wish we could've had them in camp for more weeks, but we had a busy summer and filled their time with many activities throughout--this was just one of the best weeks they had, especially our son! At the end of the week, we were able to enjoy a folder filled with their lovely works! A treasure I'll keep forever :)

If you are familiar with the BonChon in Downtown Brooklyn, you will be near this place (so a hop and a skip from Albee square mall). Of the bar, I have to tell you that this place might not be accessible. Like many offices in NYC, the studio is on the top of a set of stairs (pictures below). So if you are in a wheelchair/need help walking, this might not be the place for you. The entrance also is radically different from the lounge itself so don't be too surprised. Inside the lounge is a nice cozy space. With a bunch of seats and different table sizes so you can do a project solo or as a part of a huge group. There is also art hanging on the walls for purchase. Since it was a Friday when I went, it was open studio, meaning that you could do whatever art project they had to offer as a self guided activity. For myself, I decided to do bead bar (beading) since open studio means that there isn't an instructor there to guide you. It went pretty smoothly and there was an adequate number of beads to choose from and I had the choice of making either two bracelets or a necklace (I chose the latter). My friends chose a bunch of other activities like charcoal drawing, watercolor painting and more. They are priced differently based on the activity you choose. On the weekdays, they have more class like workshops focusing on a specific topic like art journaling, watercolor workshop and more. I might do more of those because I like more direction in art things I'm not so good at. Overall, it was a fun time and something you can do by yourself or with a friend or a group.

It definitely took the pressure off being perfect the first time and made it so we could both go home with a piece we were satisfied with. I had nothing to take home and will probably not spend another $85 to do a class again. The 2 hours whizzed by, and Jessie was really friendly and great and giving and showing instructions. She was also very patient with students' questions. The ornaments ended up being so cute from everyone, we were all thoroughly impressed by everyone's work. A lot of us, including me, didn't finish the entire project during class, so we got to take home the supplies we'd need to finish at home. Jessie made sure we had the supplies and knowledge/skills so that we'd succeed at home with finishing up. The studio is nice and cozy, there were about 16 participants of mixed genders and ages. It was really fun, and we can't wait to try more classes!

That said, there were a few organizational issues that took away from the experience. The class started late because the instructor chose to wait and see if more people would trickle in, which felt disrespectful to those of us who arrived on time. I also wish there had been clearer communication beforehand about supplies. We weren't told that we could bring our own molds, and the only molds provided were small condiment containers, which resulted in some pretty awkward and unattractive soap shapes. Better molds or advance notice would have made a big difference. It also would have been helpful if instructions or an overview of the process had been emailed ahead of time or posted on the class listing so participants knew what to expect. Additionally, a few of the soap mix-ins were unavailable. This wasn't a major issue, but it did add to the impression that the class was a bit underprepared. Overall, I still enjoyed the class and learned a lot, thanks largely to the instructor's expertise and friendliness. With better preparation and clearer communication for students, this could easily be a great experience rather than just a good one.

In between time they'll gloss it for you. It was so hard to decide what to paint because it's sooooo many options to choose from. I chose the "hand plate" and it was around $25. You have to make a reservation. When you arrive, they'll seat you and give you an overview of how the painting works. The inside is like a little paint workshop. It's a pretty standard size with enough room and there is a room in the back for a big group. I will definitely be coming back to paint more and try out their pottery experience. We were helped by Noah and he was great and very knowledgeable of the entire experience!

I was drawn to the flameworking class because of the thoughtful expression of how the instructor, Saint, described the process of working with borosilicate glass in their class. Truthfully, I was so blown away by it all. Urban Glass has a beautiful community based inclusivity spirit and artist centered focus. The studio was well organized and vast. The staff and technical support team are friendly and helpful. Saint's class had a wonderful pacing to it for a 6 hour workshop. We got to know all of the participants and connect together in a fun way, had a few informative demos on equipment safety and glass techniques, and then got to creating! Han, another glass artist at Urban Glass assisted the class, and it was really great to be able to explore making marbles, small figurines on our own and also have Saint and Han jump in when we needed a bit of extra hands on help. I felt confident from the demos and my practice time to be able to rent space on my own after. Our class has stayed in touch since, and I know several of us from the class have been back to the studio since to create. I'm excited to return to explore and learn more!
