In the land of Schnitzels, how does one decide on which has the best? We were referred to Gasthaus and decided to try it out. Besides Schnitzels, they have a lot of other traditional comfort foods. I had the schnitzel cordon bleu. The meat was perfectly fried and stuffed the ham and cheese was delicious. Don't forget to ask for extra lemon to put on the huge schnitzel! It also comes with a side salad which was average. This restaurant is little off the beaten path and I wouldn't necessary come out of my way to eat here. But if you are staying in this neighborhood, it's a good choice The service here is really friendly and it feels like a family owned business. read more

My first experience of an Austrian Beisel and a great one. Off the main road is tucked away this little gem of a Gasthaus. Warm and inviting and full of people. A table reservation is definitely required. From the wooden interior to the checkered tablecloths this screams hearty, earthy, real! There is no pretension here and thats a good thing. The food was just what I had expected. Large portions reasonably priced, good selection of food and very fulling and yummy! My beinfleisch tasted exactly like my grandmother used to make on a Sunday. Service was a bit slow, we waited over 30 minutes for our beers and then had to remind them twice as they had forgotten. The food came out plate for plate meaning that those who get served first were nearly finished by the time the last got their food. That being said, its not about the service in places like this. Nice place to go for some wholesome "home cooking" and a good place for a friends meeting place. read more

Wiener schnitzel was a wiener or should I say it was the schnit . Went here alone last minute while trying to decide where to eat after already having ate all day. Read some reviews and started off on my journey to find the restaurant. Tucked in a quaint and humble neighborhood, I found myself greeted and served food and beverages by a very friendly female. We each ordered schnitzel but different types. Everything had a very humble and authentic feel to it...The interior, the other company in the restaurant, and the food. I liked this place and the waiter was very cute. He recommended the pork roast thingy with the bread dumpling and gravy. That thing was good! We also got some beers. Hubs ordered just a sandwich that cost like 3 Euro and the waiter was like "that isn't very much food it is just pork on bread!" Hubs was like "I'll share with her" WAT WAT! OK we will also have a small goulash also. What is goulash anyway! It tasted straight up like chili powder to me! 5 stars IDC. Good place - good price - delicious pork - beer - we ate outside. I am not here to criticize another countries food when I don't even know what it is even if it tastes like wacky strong chili but without ingredients except some beef - so I gotta roll with the fiver. OK OK - they put this basket of unappetizing looking breads on the table. No! They looked dry! I'm not doing it! I won't eat free bread if it doesn't look tasty. Then at the end he took the bread away and was like did you have any breads? ?? like they may give that bread to someone else and it wasn't free?? That is weird to me! Go try Quell if you mistakenly try to walk to Schonbrunn Palace from far away. Or just go to Quell - it is a friendly place. Quell was suggested to us by the staff at Hostel Ruthensteiner. We stopped by on our way to Schonbrunn palace. It is located on a quiet residential street. The clientele is a mixture of local families and friends. The patio was filled, so we were stuck sitting inside. Warning: Smoking is permitted inside the restaurant. We ordered the pork loin with a potato dumpling and the special of the day: fried meatballs with mashed potatoes. The fried meatball was amazing. One of the best dishes of our 3-week trip. A decadent, crispy outer breading filled with tender, succulent beef. A perfect pair with the mashed. We would not recommend the pork loin... it was far too salty. The schnitzel was definitely the top seller, but we were all schnitzel-ed out after spending two weeks in Eastern Europe. Prices were very reasonable, considering the quality and portion size. read more

We stopped by this Gasthaus on our first night in Vienna looking for the Austrian classics. Weren't disappointed! For a party of 6 we had schnitzel, frankfurters, chips, and pommes frites between us. Sometimes fate works in your favor. Our package had us booked into the Courtyard Vienna Schönbrunn, a very pleasant little modern hotel which, while across the corner from the Schönbrunn Palace, was thankfully out of the way of the touristy center of Vienna. The family was taking a much deserved rest from a busy morning, so I sat alone down the lane in the biergarten of the Café Restaurant Schönbrunn, having the only rude service I'd experienced in Europe the memory of which was quickly erased by perhaps the most peaceful atmosphere you're likely to experience on a city street, browsing the possibilities for a an evening meal. The recommendations consistently pointed to a little spot about 15-20 minutes away by the name of Gasthaus Quell. After a lovely July evening walk along streets that bore not a single tourist shop, we arrived at the most lovely local eatery. While the locals were seated outside taking advantage of a pleasant summer evening, we sat inside in order to view the Germany vs France World Cup match on the only (thankfully) television in the restaurant. We were eventually joined by an older local couple playing cards and a younger man with his Messi jersey wearing young son who happily darted from table to table inquiring about our meals and joining in on a hand. The children ordered their usual schnitzel, while my wife went with the Cordon bleu, none of which failed to happily finish their meals. The restaurant was luckily out of my first choice leaving me with the mushrooms with semmelknödel, which proved to be perhaps the finest meal I had during our travels. True to any good European restaurant, the server was attentive while completely non-pressuring, allowing us to enjoy our evening. Few experiences during out travels allowed us to feel as local as Quell. Excellent food, respectful service and traditional atmosphere made this spot one of the defining moments of our visit. read more

Gasthaus Quell is a little off the beaten path in a bit of a sketchy neighborhood, which I didn't mind. It is a cozy, small, welcoming restaurant. What a great little place this is, i would most likely have never gone to this place if it was not recommended to me, as from the outside and first impressions when you work in, would seem to indicate low quality place. But this is as far from the truth as possible, the staff was super nice, not the fastest but still good. The food was great and well priced. I love Quell! This was our first meal in Vienna, and we went because our hostel recommended it as true, traditional Austrian food. It was a little off the beaten path, but that meant it was truly authentic! Walking in, we felt among the locals. Everybody was smiling and enjoying their food and each other's company, which is always a good thing to see. We ordered the house wheat beer, which was delicious! I wanted to order something truly Austrian, so the waiter recommended the goose with dumplings and sauerkraut. This was a special that night! I had never had goose before, but I was very pleasantly surprised. So tender and tasty! The dumplings were great too. I am not much of a sauerkraut fan myself, but it tasted nice actually. My friend got the nature-schnitzel, and it was perfectly tender and delicious. The gravy was perfect. I wish I could go back here! read more

Simply amazing Austrian cuisine. The staff all speak English and are super friendly. The wiener schnitzel with salad at 10 euros is a steal, and I'll never tire of Austrian draft beer. Full reservation for dinner seems to be common here, so make your own or come early like I did to beat the rush. read more

The reviews I read didn't make it clear how far this place is from Schoenbrunn Castle. It was well over 20 minutes walk. I'm not sure but I think I went through several blocks of public housing (but also through a delightful park). I felt very safe but you are definitely out of touristville and in real Vienna. The vibe of the place was very humble and homey. Lots of friends and family meeting and greeting. There's a German term, "gemütlich", which describes the feeling of warm familiarity. The food? I had roast pork with gravy, a salad (arugula, cucumber, tomato, slaw and potatoes) and the dumpling shaped into a large ball that I forget the name of. The pork was kind of salty but balanced by the dumpling. The staff was really nice. Also, a reservation would be a good idea. I got there around 5:30 and was lucky to get a table - every table had a "reserviert" sign. It was good but next time I'd want to be in the neighborhood already. My four stars reflect minus points for the saltiness and plus points for quantity and the staff. read more
