Update: 7/31/18 Came back again with some friends and it really seems like they have corrected course! The food was great, beer too, and good service. Came back again a few weeks later and the same thing. A third time a months or so later and same thing. I am seeing the same servers each time which is a good sign. Highly recommend and one of my favorites again This is a hard one to review, but in summary come here for the variety of beer, but eat somewhere else. I live in Atlantic Highlands so I have come here multiple times but this will likely be the last for food. When I first started coming here the food was very good, if not a little expensive. The good food with the great beer kept me coming back. However something has changed with the food, and it has gone down hill. My three last the food experiences have been bad, and it is one, two, three strikes your out. The burger used to be really good, not anymore. There is a better burger for less right across the street. I had the fish today, which was severly battered, doughy inside and the fish overdone. I took one bite and that was it. The tacos, mehhh. I sent a friend here recently and they were not impressed either. Also, the wait staff is never the same here. Seems they move in and out pretty quick so no one knows the menu. My waitress never even noticed that I ate only one bite of the meal, and the rest say there unneaten. Come here for some good best, skip the food and save the disappointment. Go to Copper Canyon, Christine's, or Kunya Siam instead. read more

I did not get a chance to try the food but John was great in helping me navigate the 30+ craft beer list to help me pick out just the right brew to end my night. Just bought a pair of glasses around the corner and was told to give this place a try. Supposedly it's New Orleans style of cooking. While I didn't get that impression, I did spy an entrée that was fried oysters po' boy sandwich. While I did want that, my husband suggested I might prefer the sushi tuna pizza. Later I found out it was one of his top picks. It was tasty. Nothing to brag about. It's just ok. Hubby ordered meatballs. There different types of meat: veal, lamb and beef. I can definitely say I taste the lamb and the veal. The cheese looked not as nice as yester year. Depends on the cook. Both were ok. Took bad because I was looking forward to this establishment. Also ordered a beer from a nearby brewery Carton. Ordered the cloud because it's light and didn't want anything heavy. It costs $8! Carton only charged $6. Just saying. For lunch, bill was $40 for two. I was expecting more for that price. The hostess served as our waitress as well. read more

First time here and was very satisfied with my meal. The rest of my party didn't arrive for close to half hour but the server was patient with me. We didn't order anything for like 15 minutes after they arrive and server was still extremely polite. Gave me a great beer recommendation too. I absolutely loved my crabby patty sandwich. So delicious. Only reason it gets a 4 and not a 5 was because our fried pickles weren't all that good. I thought it tasted pretty bland, but I all the entree food was exceptional. Will def be coming back and bringing more people to try this place. Tip: if you get the crabby patty, ask for a side of the chipotle aoili, adds a little spice and takes the flavor to another level. read more

Came here with a group of 5 including my 2 year old daughter. As they have no high chairs, we were going to make it work with a regular chair but they also weren't willing to give my child a seat...with 4 large open tables. The hostess was actually pretty rude. So dissappointed with the management and owner of this establishment. My family and I have eaten here many of times, and upon entering this Saturday we were turned away because we had a car seat for our 3 month old. At first their excuse was that it was a "fire hazard", then we were told by management that it was the owners desicion because it "impeded business", and then finally we were told by the owner it was in reaction to an accident that happened where a child was knocked over in a car seat. I can't imagine that this choice to refuse service to children in a family neighborhood is going to be a good one, nonetheless they have lost a patron in me and my family. read more

First the good. Beer selection was great. Lots of seasonal beers that are not often on tap as well as a good selection of local brews. Service was good, the server was knowledgeable about the beers and was able to steer my friend towards a good choice based on other beers he enjoys. Server was attentive, friendly, and personable. Now for everything else. We arrived around 4:30 and were informed the dinner menu (which was what we were provided) wasn't available until 5. The server then came back and asked if we wanted appetizers (which was confusing when we were just told the kitchen wasn't open. We decided to order an appetizer (more about that later) but then I noticed some people at the bar with a burger (from the dinner menu). Not a huge deal but slightly confusing. Food was boring and dry. Tried the wings and the burger. Wings were dry and needed to be doused in the sauces (hot and Korean bbq) to make them palatable. Sauces were unremarkable. Hot sauce seemed to be right out of a bottle. Burger was overdone when I cut into it (ordered medium), was dry, and lacked flavor. Bacon on the burger was not crisp and seemed reheated. Fries were pretty good and seasoned well but were brought down by how disappointing the rest of the food was. Food was definitely overpriced. I would consider going back for some drinks but would not order food. read more

But, last call? So went across the street to Harborside(where it actually felt like a Sat. night and drinks were flowing) and in walks the bartender from Gaslight to have some drinks there. Uncool. Get it together, guys..and get a phone # so people can get in touch. From what I understand, they have a "no kid" policy. So don't waste your time. Citing a fire code issue- even when people break down their strollers and such. So how would a disabled person in a wheelchair get inside to dine or drink? OH, they won't. Upside: in a cool building. Cool decor. Umm, that's really it. PS, $40 for wings, a salad and 2 beers? Eh. Plenty of other options in and around town. read more

Food was better than we could have expected.. we got the cauliflower tempura appetizer, the lamb burger & the taco sampler plate- everything was delicious! Service was fast & friendly, which was awesome considering how busy they were on a Saturday night. The atmosphere had a great vibe. We've been to the Gaslight at least 10-12 times since they opened. We've never had a bad meal and the beer selection is always top shelf. Burgers are great, chicken special is always good and when they had shrimp and grits, it was delightful. The reason for the 4 stars and not 5, beers are always great, but a little pricey. Servers are very knowledgeable. I don't understand the other reviews, as I've tried almost everything on the menu. Excellent restaurant. Who needs a phone nowadays anyways!!! Went to this cozy eatery the other night with friends..WOW! Our server was attentive and professional and the food was OUTSTANDING! I had the skirt steak.. When you walk in there is the very overwhelming smell of fish. It really over takes you. Other than that the drinks are good and the venue is super casual, not table clothes type of place. Visited Gaslight on a Friday night- The place was empty. I asked hostess to seat us along the wall but was told it was a 4 top and could not. We observe 2 people seated at a 4 top. Ok. We sit at a 2 top. I wanted to walk out - bad first impression. As we were leaving she is seating a couple at a 4 top table. Nice! I suggest they train the very young staff to be more accommodating especially since there were only 4 parties were sitting at tables-place was far from full. Menu is overpriced and food is mediocre. It occurred to me they are trying to appeal to NYC commuters who are accustomed to paying these prices while sitting on top of one another. We will not be returning to Gaslight for these reasons. read more

I've given this place multiple chances, despite mounting evidence compelling me to stop. What occurred last night was the final straw for us. My wife and two friends stopped in for some drinks and appetizers. After the first sip, my wife noticed that the draft beer she'd ordered was flat and tasted off - as might happen toward the end of a keg. She had ordered (and enjoyed) the same beer a couple weeks earlier, so she was aware of how it should taste and knew it was on the menu for some time. She asked the bartender to replace the barely-touched beer, and the bartender agreed, but noted the first beer would remain on the bill. Despite not even tasting the beer herself, the bartender argued that the beer was supposed to taste that way and declared it was against "policy" to remove it from the bill. This is patently ridiculous. Draft beer - even craft beer - is a high margin item. To not immediately replace the beer free of charge with something else is terrible customer service. My wife asked to speak to a manager and was told that the bartender was the manager on duty. Frustrated, the group canceled their food order and went elsewhere. Another time, I was with a group of 12-14 others on a Thursday evening. One member of our group was admonished for standing near the table while chatting with others. They called "last call" at 10:15 and starting putting chairs and stools up while we were finishing our food/drinks. Again, this is horrendous customer service and shows a complete indifference to the comfort of their guests. We went across the street to Harborside and spent the rest of our evening - and our money! - there. It's really a shame. Gaslight is a beautiful bar/restaurant with a tremendous beer list. But, for some reason, they seem to hate pleasing their customers. You must be a customer on their terms. This is the primary reason why the place was packed when it first opened, and now a seat can easily be had during prime times on weekends. Word travels fast in a town like Atlantic Highlands. We will not be going back to Gaslight, and will encourage our friends to avoid it also. read more

Stopped in during a casual bike ride early Sunday afternoon. The space itself is bright, clean, and inviting. Selection of beers was great. My boyfriend and I split the hummus appetizer. It was a little on the expensive side- but it also wasn't just hummus! The chips seemed homemade (could have used a few more!), the eggplant spread was surprisingly my favorite, feta cheese, roasted red peppers, an olive spread, and homemade hummus. The hummus was probably my least favorite part, but I'm kind of picky when it comes to that arena. Just kind of bland. Will definitely be back to hang. Ginormous TVs on either side of the bar. Great beers and service. Would love to come back here for a nice dinner, alas, no vegetarian entrees. Even a veggie burger would suffice. Hopefully this changes soon! read more

I was on my way to Harborside across the street and decided to go here instead to try something new. It's definitely trendy, doing the speakeasy thing, with no sign outside. Just sat at the bar for a drink, but would like to return for dinner. The cocktail menu continues the Prohibition era theme. I had a sidecar. It was perfectly made with high quality ingredients by the owner himself, who seemed to be very passionate about such things. Manhattan prices, I think my drink was like $13-$14. Not really complaining though, I really love Atlantic Highlands and it's nice to see new places opening and staying there. *Update: I have since been for dinner and upgraded to 4 stars. Super upset about my experience at Gaslight. I went Friday night and had the sushi pizza which was out of this world. After talking it up to my entire family we all decided to go for a little Sunday funday action and it was horrible. Initially my mother found a hair in her food and then I subsequently found a hair in my food. While I've worked in restaurants and understand this stuff happens the way the manager/bartender handled the situation was inappropriate. (Similar to that of an ignorant server). Initially she was asking my mother to describe the hair.... Are you serious? Then after taking my dish back she said it was a fiber from the towels (so get new towels) but aside from that you should not have any excuse for anything fiber or hair in your food and just move on. Trying to say we're wrong is not the way to handle it and primarily the reason why I'm writing this review when initially I didn't want to say anything because I'm a strong supporter of small local businesses and understand mistakes. Anyhow we literally paid, left and went to Tommy's Coal Fired Pizza for wings, pizza and sushi. Bottom line I'm not sure I could recommend this place to anyone. I think we just had a bad experience but I'm not sure I would come back unless for drinks (although be prepared to pay Manhattan prices). read more

My wife, stepsister in-law and her boyfriend attempted to hit this place to see why it was the talk of the town. When we arrived we were informed that due to lack of seats at the bar, we would not be allowed in unless we requested a table and had food. We were not hungry and were advised by family that lives in the town that food is nothing to write home about. So we decided instead to go to the bar across the street for a few drinks and for turned out to be a good time. Being from NYC I'm accustomed to standing when I'm going to a " trendy bar", my guess here is that these folks are not a bar, who knows, I certainly don't. Perhaps someone does. read more

Is there a 4.5? This local brewery-pub accommodated all 5 of us and the table in the back were stools, not full chairs. It needed a hook below the table to hang our coat and pocketbooks. It all worked out, though. The local and national brews were so impressive! I tried a stout #17 that was pure heaven! It was chocolatey-smooth, not bitter at all, and easy to drink. I had the lamb burger (medium) and shared my fries. We also shared the brussel sprouts, mac n' cheese, tuna pie and garlic edamame. Our food arrived all together and we ordered more beers to try. We found hair in my wife dish and the bartender/manager ask us to describe what it look like, than my daughter found hair in her dish and the bartender/manager was rude to us like we were crazy.Bartender /Manager said it came from a kitchen rag what a joke will never be back.And to top it off i had to pay $127.00 for the food, we left and finished dinner at Tommy tavern and tap in Sea Bright the place was great and the food and service 5 star. read more

Local regular here. How would you respond? You order a beer. The bartender goes to the taps. Then goes over to a refrigerator and pulls out a poured beer. And serves it to you. Was uncomfortable. Drank it. Was ok. But felt like you come to a beer bar to get fresh beer not leftovers. When he came back to get my next beer I asked him for a fresh one. He got it and poured me a fresh one. AWFUL EXPERIENCE !!!!! I used to enjoy this place. Past 2 visits (2 weeks apart) burger was ordered medium rare and came out well done. The 1st week I sent it back and I got another well done burger in its place. Last night I just sent it back, got the check & left. No one from management asked me why I sent it back or why we just got up. Poor service & poor food are the new trademarks for Gaslight. The environment was really cool, exposed brick walls and chalk boards. They had a large list of craft beers. For appetizers we had the mini pork chops which were really good and juicy. The stuffed artichoke was alright, not memorable. The sushi tuna pizza was so good, a definite must. The pickle chips were really good and tasty. I had the CBS burger which was very juicy and tasty. I also tried the cheesesteak sandwich which was ok. It didn't have much cheese and the steak was well done. The truffle tries are also a must. I tried the chocolate pecan pie was the best I've ever had. And the peanut butter ganache was very good too. If you have room try out the homemade desserts. No complaints about this place. Completely astounded that we were also turned away at the door for having kids with us to eat lunch/dinner, even though it was half empty. We have frequent this restaurant before and were well received. We were told that it was a fire hazard that we had a car seat, than were told that management didn't want to have kids at thier establishment, and finally we were told that there was an incident that occurred involving a car seat a week prior. Which is it? It's a shame we enjoyed the food and the beverage selection. Bottom line they refused service to us, and I will never go back again and tell whoever not to go to this restaurant.
