Words and pictures cannot do justice to the amazing work Miguel Garza and his team did in a total transformation of our house over the better part of last year. We bought this house knowing that it was going to be a "fixer upper" but nobody knew just how much work was going to be required. Miguel's team ran a project that included a full gut rehab of the entire property, including digging out a wet basement, adding french drains, laying a new slab, converting the basement into an attached apartment, adding a roof top dormer addition, a new deck, five new bathrooms and two new kitchens. All of this work was done to a house that had been neglected for nearly a hundred years and needed a lot of work. Miguel had to contend with a completely saturated basement, poor/missing foundations, nonsensical walls and layouts, crooked floors, rotting wood, plans that were complicated by shifting requirements, scrutiny from our historic and tree preservation regulators, an array of different subcontractors and workers going in and out and he did it all to perfection. This job would not have been possible without his total and complete professionalism and expertise throughout the entire experience. In addition to Miguel, his core crew and wife Soraya also deserve our sincere gratitude for their continued commitment to us and the project. There were many things the team did for us that was extra work for them just because they wanted to make sure they did the job correctly. This included, in many cases, Miguel sacrificing some of his overall margin. His workers, for how hard they worked, often times in extreme temperatures, never complained and were always willing to put in extra effort to correct a problem. In the end a new house was essentially built and extended from the inside out. Garza Contractors are not only engineers, they are artists and also good, honest, ethical people. Please note that I am providing my review for Garza's consultation and process of estimation specifically. I have not hired this company to perform any work. I requested a consult to repair some minimal heat damage to two pieces of vinyl siding (photos included). The owner, Soraya, got back to me very quickly and was very responsive but I was disappointed in the estimate provided. Before receiving the estimate, I had three licensed and insured reputable contractors come out in person to inspect the damage and provide a quote. All three of them provided an estimate between $200-250 for the repair, which includes materials and color matching. Garza Contractors quoted me $1800 for the repair based on the photos. The owner stated that the reason was because they had to remove more siding to repair it correctly. I voiced my concerns but the owner would not consider providing me a reassessment for another quote. I did some research and found that on average, a more major repair for more significant damage would cost $400 - $600 max. $1800 is 2.5x the average asking price and at this point, seems a bit dishonest. I would recommend that anyone planning on working with Garza Contractors to do their research and get multiple estimates from different companies to ensure that you're being quoted accurately before moving forward. read more

Garza Contractors replaced my porch with a beautiful new one. My house was built in 1916, so this required a really skilled contractor. The porch had been wood that someone covered with concrete. (Why? I don't know.) The steps were uneven, of differing heights, and not level. As a temporary measure years ago, I had another contractor place wood on the steps to even them out, but the wood was no longer secured to the steps. The concrete floor of the porch was cracked. The hand railing was rotted and disconnected from the brick column on the ground. The brick column was not stable and could have been easily knocked over. No other contractor that I had consulted over the years was willing to tackle this job. Garza also replaced the concrete landing at the foot of porch as well as the crumbling front steps from the sidewalk to the landing and the concrete steps from the landing down to the cellar door. The steps by the cellar had been of different heights and were not level. In the backyard, Garza restacked and cemented stairs (made of paver blocks), adding manufactured stone treads that I had already purchased. All of the work was done expertly and within just a few weeks. I didn't expect Miguel Garza to meet his timeline, but he did by sending a pretty big crew. The porch turned out much, much better than I had ever expected, and it makes the whole house look new! The concrete steps and landing are smooth and even. At first, I was not completely satisfied with the work on the back steps, but Miguel Garza took personal responsibility for a miscommunication with his workers and had the work redone to my satisfaction promptly and at no additional cost. Garza Contractors are my new contractors. I expect to have them back next year to paint the house, replace my retaining wall, and do some other work on my property. I highly recommend them. Garza's team did a great job with our bathroom renovation. We had them do a nearly complete teardown of the chipped pink tile and aging fixtures, then install the new materials that we had picked out and acquired ourselves. They were able to do the bulk of the work within the time frame they had promised and came back a few times to apply the finishing touches once some materials we had ordered from our suppliers were finally delivered. The staff communicated with us well and were willing to make some adjustments when we wanted them to. The work wrapped up a few weeks ago and we are thrilled with the results. Everything looks very neat and professional. We also had them do a few small repairs in other parts of the house. They went above and beyond what we had expected in touching up the paint in one of the bedrooms, at no extra charge. As said in my previous review, we were so impressed by our kitchen renovation with Garza Contractors last year that we invited them back. We just had them finish: (1) bathroom renovation including adding a shower to a half bath, (2) door installation, (3) basement bedroom finishing and painting, and (4) exterior foundation sealing and waterproofing. Once again, we are more than happy with the quality of the work done by Miguel and his guys (especially Gustavo!). Not only were they hardworking, friendly, and responsive to questions and suggestions, they were also very conscientious. When we did the foundation sealing and waterproofing, the guys had to dig up some plants along the side of our house. We asked them to put the plants aside so we could replant them, but the workers went above and beyond and even replanted them for us! That is just one of many examples of how exceptional they are. Garza did an AMAZING job finishing our laundry room and garage! For the laundry room, we didn't quite have a vision...just wanted there to be walls, a ceiling, and a separation from the utilities. They made it look AMAZING and way better than any vision we would have had. They were SO FAIR with the pricing, and told us ways to save money. My husband also LOVES what they did with the garage. It's pretty, clean, and no longer smells like the previous owners' cigarette smoke. They started the job within a week of our quote, and then finished the job in less than a week! I had a structural problem with my roof/beam and several estimates were very high. I have since used them for another project, and they again completely the work and made a slight preference modification without any hassle. Garza was the best choice I could've made. A person came out in 1 day to quote out some pretty significant work load and I got the pricing back I think 1 maybe 2 days after that, broken out in a way I could easily understand for each job. They didn't nickel and dime me at all and went above and beyond. For example, my intake vent was too close to the ceiling for the crown mounding, so they simply dropped it down an inch or two and rescrewed it so that it would fit cleanly and look great. I've used a fair number of contractors and there's usually something that happens that makes you regret something such as if an "issue" arises that results in an added cost, or if something wasn't as planned, or if the attention to detail just wasn't there on something stupid like a line of caulk or cornering or something small that you hope to never encounter because you're paying for it to be completed correctly. I felt GREAT when Garza finished. They cleaned up everything really well, dusted and wiped down everything to ensure our home was back to being our home as soon as the job finished. They worked 8-5 everyday for 4 days and seemed genuinely happy to do what they do. I was genuinely happy to have our home projects knocked out flawlessly. Highly recommend. The Garza team just completed several renovations in our new fixer-upper, including installing a sump pump in our basement and framing and hanging drywall, installing tile in two rooms, installing new hardwood and refinishing other hardwood, painting the entire house, and installing a brand new kitchen. They completed everything in 30 days which was about 2 weeks shy of when I really needed it to be completed. They left everything wonderfully clean and move-in ready. Any issues I noted along the way were quickly addressed and fixed by Soraya, Miguel, and Gustavo. They were all so professional and friendly and it was a real pleasure to deal with them. We just finished a kitchen and dining room renovation with Garza and we are very happy with the results. We switched the location of the kitchen and the dining room, took down a wall that separated the kitchen from the living room, and added on a small addition. From the beginning Garza quoted us a very fair offer, and worked with us on our timelines. We did a lot of the front loading paperwork before the job began and we worked with an engineer to have signed plans. We also ordered the new materials for the roof and the instructions for installation. For the permits we worked with an architect that Miguel recommended and we were very happy with her. We purchased everything for the job ourselves. Our timeline did get delayed a little because of a miscommunication on when we should have ordered our windows. However that was the only hiccup we had with ordering everything ourselves. Miguel was very easy to get ahold of and anytime we had a question he would answer the same day. His attention to detail and constant communication is why I would recommend Garza to anyone who is looking for home renovations. We plan to use Garza again in the future and have already recommended them to our friends and family. It has been about a month since we have finished renovations and we are so incredibly happy. Miguel and his crew were efficient, clean, respectful, hardworking and really made us feel like we were in good hands. The only thing that I would critique Garza on is the plumber that Miguel subcontracts made mistakes in our kitchen several times. It wasn't anything that couldn't be easily fixed but several things on the job had to be redone or fixed. However everything that Garza themselves did was beautifully done. We found Garza Contractors using Yelp for a bathroom remodel and the reviews you find here are spot on. The estimator showed up on time, listened carefully and took notes as I explained what we wanted, and offered a very fair estimate for our work the next business day. We had to make a small change to how we wanted to tile the shower, and Soraya quickly was able to amend our quote with no delay to the start of the work. The remodel went great, and I really have to commend the work team on going the extra mile. Whenever the team encountered a hiccup, whether it was changes to the wiring for our electrical switches, or swapping out faucets they found were too old to reuse, the guys handled it quickly and produced great results. Just finished my second project with Garza Contractors and am just as happy as I was five years ago. Over the last few years I let several tasks build up and Garza handled them all in three days of fast work. Workers were always on time, went the extra mile when tasks were trickier than expected, and the end products were all top quality. Outside tasks included fixing and repainting my front step railing; fixing a section of broken driveway concrete, and fixing a broken piece of siding. Inside tasks included replacing missing floor tile (left broken and unfixed by a different contractor), painting the basement walls, and replacing a shoddy doorknob. Unlike other reviewers, we can't recommend Garza to the Yelp community. They renovated 2 small bathrooms and did some small jobs around the house. To their credit, they were courteous and on time, and, I think, tried to be fair without wasting their own time and money, but we just had a negative experience with them overall. We got the impression that they didn't care about our opinions or business because they have enough good reviews and happy customers. They blamed literally everything else but their own workmanship for us being unhappy - us for being too picky, our house for being crooked, our materials for being hard to work with. We decided to write this review because we think they should care about ALL of their customers. We were communicative and courteous with the crew. They basically came in and started working without talking to us or asking us any questions, which is good and bad. We often had questions and comments because we had spent so much time purchasing all the materials (sometimes the wrong materials due to conflicting information from Miguel and the crew lead, Rene), and we wanted to be involved. Rene was nice, but definitely not receptive to us weighing in on things at all. Towards the end, Miguel literally told me that homeowners should just let them do their work and be happy with it in the end, not look at it in stages and ask questions or make suggestions as they go. While we saw his point, we felt that it was our right as the homeowners to have our opinions heard if we were concerned about or didn't like the look of something. We also don't feel we are/were particularly difficult people to work with. One of the major things we had issues with was our upstairs bathroom floor - they were going to tile over the existing tile that was cracked, uneven and so high that you would almost have to step up into the bathroom if there was another layer. We were not informed of this during the estimate process, but we agreed to pay extra to have them completely remove the old flooring, install a new subfloor, and lay the new tile. In the end, the new floor wasn't level and the mosaic tile was uneven and cracked in many places, enough that you could almost stub your toe walking around on it. When we expressed displeasure with it, the crew literally walked out of our house. After a lot of back and forth, a new crew came back to try to make some repairs, but it ended up looking even worse because they used a different color grout to do it, and they still left work unfinished. There were other issues that we either expressed to them during the work itself, or we found after they finished. This includes but is not limited to: shower grout that wasn't mixed consistently so it's all different colors, tiling a wall without using spacers, peeling paint because they didn't use the correct type of primer, a toilet that wasn't properly sealed and screwed into the floor, plumbing issues with said toilet as well as both sinks and shower fixtures, a new banister that is already falling out of the wall with normal use, throwing tile scraps into our backyard, among others. We've had Garza back out twice since they "finished", but ultimately we ended up hiring a trusted plumber to make repairs, and another company to completely rebuild and retile the floor (again). While still under warranty, we no longer trust Garza to come back into our home. They did give us some money off for our displeasure with the bathroom floor (nowhere near enough to have it redone), but they are currently not responding to our requests for money back on jobs we've had to hire someone else to repair. We regret using them and letting them pressure us into paying them in full before we had a chance to get estimates for repairs. read more

Garza has been my go to contractor for a couple of years now. I recently had a pipe burst and they were able to fix the issue within 1 day. Miguel and his staff are professional individuals that care about customer satisfaction. I used to go with cheap unlicensed individuals and I learned the hard way that it was not worth it as I have had a lot of issues as a result from inferior work. Miguel and his staff has done the following jobs for me -put a prefabricated shed together with concrete slab -redid my basement shower and plumbing -added dryer vent to outside of house -replaced two exterior doors -replaced hot and cold water pipes They are an honest company with very fair prices and I highly recommend them. read more
