My only complaint is on me...that I didn't go to this place a lot sooner. I hesitated because it looked like a junk yard to me. I found out that it was packed with cars because everyone wants this place working on their cars. I tried all the shops in the area and this one blows them all away. The BEST BMW shop in Los Angeles! Gary is a master tech and such a great guy. Is other mechanic Jesse is great also, very knowledgeable. I have a 1999 740il with 82,000 original miles. The check engine came on and I took it in. Turns out I needed some sensors replaced. The labor rate was very fair and the price he charged me for 2 factory BMW sensors was the same price you would find them online or on amazon. He even saved the old sensors (which were stamped 1999 BMW) so I could see them and save them if I so desired. He also mentioned a few oil leaks and showed them to me in detail. I have a 2008 BMW 328XI and live nearby...DO NOT GO TO GARY'S. Spend the extra money and go to BMW or wherever your car can be serviced professionally! ONE appointment turned into four appointments because they could not get it right at Gary's. I originally went in for an oil change. Apparently, they were trying to "be nice" and rotated my tires. But, they cannot balance them in the shop as they do not have the right equipment. My car was totally thrown off balance as one of the weights in the tires fell off and they couldn't fix it. I brought it back in for new brakes a week later and told them about the shaking. They drove it and said they "didn't feel the shaking"- So, I get the new brakes and go on my way. I'm on the freeway the next day and my car is literally bucking and smells like fire and burnt rubber. I call them and they send a tow truck. Later that day, they call and tell me they pulled the emergency brake too tight when putting on my new brakes. They even had the audacity to try to use my AAA membership so they didn't have to pay for the tow- too bad I don't have one. When I picked my car up, the shaking was even worse than before, the car vibrating out of control at high speeds. I bring it back to Garys again. Gary himself drives the car and tells me to go to a balance shop and get the tires done. This was THEIR FAULT for rotating them when I DID NOT ASK THEM TO DO SO. They admitted it was their fault and they shouldn't be rotating tires without the proper machines to balance them- they told me to go to another shop to balance them. Did they offer to pay? Of course not. DO NOT GO TO GARY'S. I SPENT OVER $1000.00 THERE AND THEY DIDNT EVEN OFFER ME ANY MONEY BACK OR TO PAY FOR MY TIRE BALANCING. MY CAR HAS NOT DRIVEN THE SAME SINCE GARY'S PIT STOP. Jesse helped me out and they figured out what was wrong my with AC quickly without charging for the inspection. I originally met Gary when my mechanic retired and a body shop took over his lease. I was referred to Gary by the Shell Station down the road. Fortunately I went and introduced myself and after a brief conversation decided to have my car serviced there. I did not know he was a certified BMW mechanic until later. After being in a car accident and receiving two other outrageous quotes, I called Gary and asked if he could please look at the car and give me a quote. " Sure Susan, no problem" was always the answer I received from Gary. There was no charge for the estimate, and he made room for me the next day on an already very busy lot. Not only did he completely rebuild my suspension and put in all new air bags and many other things, he took the time to educate me about my car and inform me ahead of time want he was going to do and why. Having been a tech I can appreciate great service and someone who is upfront and honest. Though his shop is no longer a secret and it's always busy, I can deal with dropping it off and know the job was done right when he calls me to tell me it's ready. I brought my wife's (newer but previously owned) VW into Gary's the other day because some sensor lights had been going on. In addition, the brake's had been squealing. After they looked it over, I received a call that they had gone over the car, found nothing wrong (other than a well-known quick oil change place I had brought it to being unable to adjust the sensors or apparently put air in the tires) and gave me some advice about having the VW location apply an anti-squeal material that was missing from the brakes. Gary's readjusted the sensors and did not charge me for the work or advice. I really appreciated that. Thus, while I cannot comment on the quality of their work, I do give Gary's huge commendations for being upright and honest (which is a big deal in the neighborhood) and I WILL bring my car to Gary's when service is needed because they showed that they know the proper way to do business. My "engine malfunction" light came on just as I was picking up a friend in Marina del Rey for a long weekend in Santa Barbara. We decided to take her car and leave mine at a shop. The question was...which shop since I don't live in the area and she drives a Porsche. I looked up local BMW service centers and found Gary's Pit Stop which had top Yelp reviews. I was still skeptical when I dropped my car off since they could have totally taken advantage of me. Not only did they identify and fix a super obscure issue, but they charged me for only one hour of labor. And, that hour of labor was only $95 instead of the typical $150 per hour and two hour minimum or $300 just to diagnose an issue with another $200+ to fix it. In addition, I expected to get my car back at the end of the week if I was lucky. They got it done first thing Monday morning. Okay, full disclosure, Gary is a friend. But as you can see from his solid rating, he needs no fluffing on my part to bring more business to his doorstep. The interesting part of this story is how Gary became a friend. A number of years ago, one of my close friends asked me to stop by where Gary used to work to drop something off to him. I met Gary, immediately resonated with his homespun manner, and thought the next time I need some automotive work, I'll call Gary up. Well, not very long after I had that thought, my car broke down late at night in a gas station with no service bays off the 405 and National Blvd. I first rang up that same aforementioned friend who I was coincidentally now on my way to see. He suggested I call Gary and ask Gary what I might do. When I reached Gary, he was many miles away near the beach. I told Gary about my situation. Without hesitation and without my even asking, he told me he'd make a trip out to see me and help me get my car back on the road. Come on, now, who does that? Anyway, 20 minutes or so later Gary rolls up with tools in hand and has me back on the road in 15 minutes or less. Asks for nothing, Just happy to help a friend of a friend out. That is exactly the quality of person you are dealing with here. (Please don't expect that Gary repeats that act of generosity.) Just understand that he is a real person who has a vein of authentic kindness running through his body and that he is a trustworthy dude. When my ride dropped me off the owner Gary personally came out and washed her windows because I said that we couldn't see on the way there. This happened when Gary replaced my engine. He was the only one who would accommodate my half-finished project. He gave me back my car with a shiny new engine block I had mailed there, ready for me to finish assembling, which was very unusual for me to request -- and was very easy to work with the whole way. His staff worked very hard to help me find a machine shop, work around my towing / dropoff schedule, manage my spare and extra parts, work around the giant crate I had mailed to their small facility, and make sure every small piece on the old engine was transferred over so I could hook all my wiring and accessories back up. Was very straightforward and up front with money and cost, and flexible with payment. I feel like I got a great deal compared to anywhere else. read more

Gary is the man. Consider yourself exceptionally fortunate that you happen to be reading about his shop. He first worked on my 1995 BMW 325ic in 2007 when I still lived in LA. Now I just got a 2001 BMW 330ci on a visit down here and he took extra steps to get my car into the bay and work on it before I take it on a road trip home with my wife and baby--safety is naturally on my mind. Just mounted and balanced 4 new tires for only $15 each--I had them shipped to his shop after buying them online. He also replaced the control arm bushings (very common on an e46) and charged half the labor as other shops. When it comes to BMW, this guy knows his poop. He worked at a BMW dealer for more than 10 years and it shows. He explains exactly what is going on with the car and never gives you the brush off. Very fair pricing and friendly to deal with. SERIOUSLY, THIS GUY IS LEGIT. Another mechanic that has worked with Gary for many years, Jerry is also very knowledgeable and friendly. OMG - I will never go anywhere else now! I finally got the car of my dreams - a 1998 740iL and was having trouble finding qualified people to work on it. I had to start putting oil in it and got on line to find a reputable BMW mechanic. I found Gary on Yelp. He is the best!! He went over the whole car, said front end, brakes, under the car, etc., looked really good. The issue is it's an older engine - he said is very typical and basically not much you can do but add oil now and then. Not only did he not try to gouge me and get me to replace seals or valves or rings - but he also said this visit was 'on the house'! Please don't go here. You will be so disappointed. I brought my Mercedes here for repairs in July 2011. Gary diagnosed a transmission problem. He told me it would cost $3000.00 to repair. I paid him the money in cash. He supposedly fixed the car and gave me a warranty in writing for 12 months or 12,000.00 miles. The car has never run right. I took it back several times. The last time was in January of this year. The car broke down on the freeway in Westminster and I had to have it towed to Gary's. I was told it was again the transmission. The car was at Gary's for nearly 3 months. He kept telling me he was having it fixed and basically just making up stories and stalling. When I got the car back there were several new things wrong with the car and the transmission still wasn't fixed. Finally took the car to CARMAX for a free evaluation and was told by CARMAX the transmission was not working. What a total ripoff. Still contemplating small claims court for this guy. read more

After standard service on my car at Southbay BMW, my convertible top began sticking and having trouble opening. When I returned to the dealership, I was told I needed my entire convertible top replaced at a price tag of $18,000 and of course, it was not covered by warranty!! At that time, I resigned myself to a faulty convertible top, stopped seeking any further service at the dealership and began going exclusively to Gary's Pit Stop for my routine services. Gary and his team were always professional, timely and trustworthy. When I inquired about my convertible top issues, Gary began researching the potential repair options, eventually successfully finding the issue. I have been going to Gary's fPit Stop or the past 4 years. I just got a CPO so I won't need his services for while, but when I do, I will be going straight back there. He was servicing my prior vehicle (2004 BMW 3series) and saved me alot of money when it suddnely died. I was very upset and confused and can't express how much it meant to me that he was very comforting and helpful when this happened. He hooked it up to the computer and notified me that BMW had an extended warrant for that issue (interestingly enough it wasn't a recall) and that BMW would cover the entire repair so I should take it to the BMW dealer immediately, and he was absolutely right. Some other mechanics don't have this up to date information and I would have been left high and dry as that repair alone would have cost $7,000 (I kid you not) which BMW covered totally and even gave me a loaner. I wouldn't have known about if Gary hadn't diagnosed and researched it properly. And when I had an issue with it after this repair, his mechanic quickly informed me that it was the dealer's responsibility and to take it back and he was right again. Gary and his staff have been wonderful to me and I can't say enough about all of them. They totally know what they are doing and have gone out of their way to help me and I think the pricing is more than reasonable. read more

There are times when everything goes right; we all relish and cherish those days, but then there are days when it seems everything is going wrong and it's usually those times when our cars tend to break down most isn't it. Well when I had one of those days, I happened upon Gary's. I met a kind guy with a great smile. He took a look and a listen and knew who the problem was. I left my car and anticipated his call. Like anyone I feared the worse or shall we say, "most expensive " news was to come. Gary called me and told me, it was a mid sized job and was priced fair and appropriately. Here's the best part: I received a call on the day (and I think the very minute he said he would call) I was to pick up the car and Gary leads in with " well I got good news and bad news ( in his proper Queens English accent) my heart and wallet went cold. " well the bad news is it's not what we thought, the good news is, it's going to cost you half as much" I jumped for joy. I tell this story because I was prepared to pay for a certain job and would not have know any different no matter what he did. Gary's honesty was such a blessing that I was able to pay three other bills I would have missed paying, if not for his honesty and integrity.
