Gary's Handyman Service did a timely and great job on our roofing project in the Pasadena area at a fair price. The roof was worn out and had a leak around the chimney. Gary came quickly after we contacted him for an estimate and inspected the roof. He made a few good suggestions including placing a water diverter above an area of the fascia that is prone to water damage. After agreeing on the terms, Gary scheduled his crew to come out in a matter of days. They completed the project quickly and with attention to detail, including hauling away waste and sweeping up the patio and driveway below the part of our house that they re-roofed. We had a really old single-pane mostly glass front door and after accidentally breaking a few panes, we decided to upgrade to a new steel door. Our existing door was so old that it was shorter than the typical 80 inches and almost an inch thinner as well. It is unfortunate that you have to leave at least one star on Yelp. I was very disappointed to find, after looking at the work completed by Gary's Handyman Service, that the roof eave facia boards were not primed coated, and were not even painted on the edges or the back side, and only the face was single coated, with a thin enough coat that you can even see the brush strokes. The gutter bracket supports were all cut/removed and were not replaced. The nails that were removed from the gutters were just left lying on top of the roofing material. Gary and his workers didn't even go the little extra mile to remove the leaves from the gutter that he removed, then replaced... he could have turned the gutter upside down to dump the leaves. He tried to tell me that the gutter bracket supports were that way when he got there...NO, they definitely were not...the cut/grind marks are fresh! When confronted, he tried to argue that the wood had indeed been primed and painted, but as you can see in the photo, the exposed edge (and back side that you can't see) has not even been primed! This is a roof facia board that is exposed to sun and rain alike, and without being properly primed/painted, there will again be dry rot, which was the reason he was contacted in the first place! All he could say about everything he did incorrectly was 'it's no biggi', ' it's no biggi'...if it wasn't a 'biggi', then why wasn't it done properly in the first place?! At first, I requested he come back and finish the job properly, and as promised. As communications went back and forth, I decided I didn't even want him back on the property. I would rather pay someone who is reputable come and redo his mess. Again, I am very disappointed with Gary's work. My mother-in-law is 88 years old and she paid a premium price in order to get this work done, and I didn't question it because I thought he would do a professional job. It is not good to take advantage of anyone, but an 88-year-old woman?! Because most people won't/can't go up on a roof, or check out concealed areas, that doesn't mean that it's not expected that you perform your work in a professional manner. I would strongly suggest you use someone else for your needs...ANYONE else! Gary's honesty, work ethic, integrity and quality of work are COMPLETELY subpar. read more

Sunday morning our kitchen faucet breaks and our usual plumber doesn't work on Sundays so I jump on Yelp to look for local handymen in our area. Even though on Yelp it says he was Closed on Sunday, I still requested for a quote. To our surprise, he responded within the hour and said he would be available after lunch! The price he quoted was reasonable for labor--not the most expensive and not the lowest. When Gary came, he took a look at the existing faucet and the new faucet we bought and let us know which parts was still needed. My husband went out to go get the parts at the Home Depot nearby, so I think that helped with minimizing the cost of the repair/replacement. Gary was very quick and finished up within 2 hours (and that was including the time waiting for my husband to get the correct parts). We had Gary come to install our blinds. He arrived on the promised time . We had total of 17 blinds and one door. He completed the job to our satisfaction and all our blinds were properly installed. There was a manufacturing defect in a couple of blinds and Gary was nice enough to say if we got the new blinds from the manufacturer , he would come by later to install them. I can't say enough about Gary. He's skilled, honest, a true pro and blazingly FAST. From the moment I called him and got his super fast response, he was ON IT from the get-go. I had a huge problem regarding a rotten exterior door at a rental property and needed real help getting it fixed. Of all the people I reached to for help, only Gary showed up when he said he would (within 2 hours of my initial call), diagnosed the problem, researched the materials needed, gave me a fair estimate in pricing, and a window for service (which was the very next day and the day after). As single woman, it can be a bit challenging trusting two types of workers: mechanics and handymen. It's just not easy to tell if they're on the up and up. And when you find one you can trust, it can feel like cause for celebration. And so I about did a little jig when I got the call from Gary that he'd finished fixing the venting on my water heater. I was so relieved because I had to leave him with my house door unlocked, realizing that I was literally trusting a stranger with most all of my worldly possessions. But I had little choice because I was under a tight time constraint. Earlier in the week the gas company had informed me that fumes were not escaping properly from my water heater and that I should contact a plumber to correct the problem. After about 12 calls to various plumbers and handymen, Gary called to let me know that he could meet me at my house within the hour. I had an issue with my staircase that nobody wanted to tackle until I called Gary. I told him about my issue and he LISTENED to my need rather than just assuming what I wanted like so many others that I called before him. I had a spiral staircase that needed to be reinforced to my loft. Gary shows up all no nonsense, takes a look and diagnoses the issue in a very logical way. Hey we all know sometimes you gotta think outside the realm of conventional thinking to resolve a problem.
