However, if your purpose is to make a purchase and have no qualms asking an employee for advice without fear of being ridiculed, then shop elsewhere! I went to Gary's Wine & Marketplace today to purchase a gift basket. I had a great experience in the past with very helpful staff and today was no exception. I was introduced to Mary Rose, the gift basket specialist. Mary Rose took the time to inquire about the type of gift I would like to present. She escorted me throughout the store making suggestions and leading me to various displays of gift items that she thought would make a lovely gift. Her taste is impeccable. Mary Rose also explained how the purchase would be packaged and shipped. Her knowledge was extensive and I was so pleased with the arrangement. I selected the wine on my own however because I was a bit put off by the disinterested wine specialist, who I think may have been the owner. If that were not the case I certainly would give Gary's five stars. read more

I went to a Gary's in Madison today after I researched a certain wine online and Gary's said they had. I asked someone on the floor for it and they asked someone else if they had it, it was Flora Springs, Trilogy '13. That person looked at me and said no we don't. Never offered it in a different vintage, never offered something similar, nothing, they just walked away. I drove 35 minutes to the store to buy an $80 bottle of wine and walked out with nothing. I will never go back, I ordered it on Wine.com it will be here Wednesday. Horrible customer service!!! read more

I have always had a great experience here.......I ask for suggestions and they are right on......I have even been told that I can bring the bottle back if I don't like it......that is valuing the customer......I drive and hear their advertisements for steaks and lobsters and they do not sell them in nj........bummer.......excellent service with a large variety....... read more

My husband went to Gary's for a bottle of Blanton's bourbon, as he does every year for me for a holiday gift. None were on the shelf so my husband asked if they had any in stock. He was told a shipment had arrived two days prior, but was told by Gary himself that if we spent more money in his store during the year he could have gotten one. I called the store and spoke with Gary about this, because I found this offensive. Basically, Gary said that because they receive a minimal amount they can't put them on the shelf and have to sell them sparingly. Obviously we were not the chosen ones, even though we buy plenty of liquor there throughout the year (just a few days before this happened we purchased a nice bottle of single malt scotch). We surely will never step foot in this store again, but I am impressed that Gary took the time to return my phone call given that people like me are not good enough to shop in his establishment. By the way, my husband easily found a bottle of Blanton's for purchse at a local liquor store, where they are friendly and appreciate our business! read more

Gary' Wine is a wonderful spot when you're looking for variety. Wine may be their specialty but all types of alcohol can be found for all budgets. Stop by and get a treat from their deli or if you're hosting a party don't leave without some of their cheese. Gary's of Wayne is one of the top wine shops on the East Coast! Their prices are the best in the area, blowing away Bottle King and CostCo but that's not even why you go there. They have daily wine & cheese tastings and there are chefs there almost every Saturday along with chocolate tastings, honey, olive oil, dozens of cheeses. Their events and celebrity appearances are spectacular such as Lidia Bastianich and Dan Aykroyd and winemakers from all over the world are there on a weekly basis showcasing their wines. The previous poster obviously works for Bottle King who is hurting ever since Gary's moved into town in 2008 ... Bottle King is well .... Bottle King ... dark, dingy, and a wine a month gets tasted on a barrel somewhere. Gary's wine is one of the best places to get wine in my area. The selection is always superb and they're always bringing in new product for their customers to try. The employees there are always helpful and very knowledgeable about the wines they are promoting. Unlike most liquor stores, Gary's sell much more than just wine. I would rate Gary's as one of the best wine shops I have visited in North Jersey. Very good selection, good, but not great every day prices. But all wine on sale twice a year. I have always found the help to be very helpful. They have come up to me many times asking if I needed help. The Saturday afternoon wine tasting bar is very well run - if only NJ would get rid of the four wine limit! Excellent cheese selection and other food. The cheese in Wayne is better than some cheese shops. A fine wine room, gift baskets, etc, etc. My only concern is why so many employees have been working there such a short time? It may not be a nice place to work. read more

This store has a great selection and good prices but I absolutely despise shopping here. In fact, if it wasn't for the fact that it is the only place I can get several of my favorite wines, I would never shop here. The main reason is the customer service generally stinks with the exception of Donna, who is fantastic. My experience is that the employees are unfriendly and act like you are bothering them. Picking up special orders that have been there for more than a day usually takes about 20 minutes since they seem to never be able to find them. Special orders are also a pain since if they don't have it in stock or a sufficient quantity in stock, you cannot order it via the website and are forced to go into the store to do it. You can call the order in but sometimes it gets placed and sometimes it doesn't.... good luck... read more

Went there tonight because my mom and i always go there, and being that i just turned 21 in January i figured why not make a quick stop at gary's. I went to purchase the new Rose angry orchard. I got my six pack and went up to the counter with my friend (who was not 21 nor was she drinking with me) and immediately i was asked for ID. I did not even get a friendly hello, just "can i see your ID" i didnt think it was a problem, so i took out my ID and the employee then looked at me and said "from both of you" my friend then backed up and said "oh no im not buying this or even drinking it im just here with her". The employee then stated being that she was in the store she needed to be 21 and no one under 21 was allowed in the store and if she was not 21 that she had to leave. My friend then left to go wait outside. She then stated she had to wait for managers approval to proceed with the purchase. I asked why, and she said it was because i had someone with me that was not 21. I said okay well i am 21, so i can legally purchase alcohol. She then stated that i could be purchasing for someone under age. I said that i am 21 and i am the one who is drinking it. She then told me that her manager (who i never saw) said i couldnt purchase the alcohol. I was then asked very rudely to leave. While this was going on another employee whispered that i was trying to buy alcohol under age. I am 21, i wanted to buy alcohol which is legal in the United states. Not only was i denied, i was embarrassed and treated like total crap to be honest. The cashiers were rude for no reason. Mind you, i am in there all time with my mother and i have never in my life been asked for ID. My family, and my friends family will never purchase from Gary's ever again after the service i received tonight. I am an extremely disappointed, and embarrassed customer. read more

This is truly as good as it gets. When this place opened I lived close enough to walk there and even though I have moved a little further away I still go here constantly and recommend the store to anyone who loves beer like I do. Not only does it have an amazing selection of limited editions from Dogfish Head, Rogue, and Stone (among others) but they also have a cavernous wine section (not a big wine drinker but still impressive). Their cold case is HUGE when I saw it the first time I was blown away everything from the exotic to the mundane. And to top it off they have a great deli counter and candy from england. This place might seem nice but I have never been anywhere with more awful customer service. I was looking for a pretty unique beer, looked it up online and saw that Gary's had it. I called 30 minutes before going to pick it up to make sure it was in stock at the Wayne location before wasting my time. I went there and it was completely out of stock. The attendant was surprised someone had even told me they had it in stock. The person who answered the call clearly did not even check if they had it in stock and wasted my whole afternoon as I had traveled to get there. If you ask me, this is absolutely unacceptable for a wine/beer market that praises itself for the helpfulness of it's staff. Gary's, you should be absolutely ashamed of your service. After being thoroughly disappointed, I did not want to buy a single thing at the store. read more

Great selection, many different wines. However, I bought a bottle of Malbec with a dry cork - the wine had gone bad....

We ordered a case of red wine from this merchant, who never advised that a signature would be required for delivery. Had they been clear that this was a condition of purchase, we would not have bought from them. After a failed delivery attempt, I asked FedEx to deliver the case on Saturday, and although they agreed, it is now Saturday afternoon after 2PM, I have been trapped in my house all day waiting for this wine, which is still not here. NEVER, NEVER AGAIN ! Having customers waste a day waiting for 6 bottles of wine is just such a poor business practice. read more

Would not recommend on-line ordering. Five days from placing an order for a case of wine until it shipped! Ordered 6 bottles of a pinot from another merchant the same day and had a bottle last night for dinner. Just not on top of their game...have ordered from them half a dozen times over several years and am always disappointed. This is the last time. read more

I had a bottle of wine with dinner that was outstanding. I did an internet search and Gary's came up as having a case of the correct vintage. I ordered and received an email confirmation with a note that reads do not substitute Year. I got to the store to pick up and the clerk couldn't try and get me out of the store with a taped up box. I asked to inspect the order and pulled a bottle out. Wrong year. I pulled another and another until the clerk said it's all 14 not 13. He said it was the same price... I asked to return it which a manager had to approve. I explained someone should have called me and gave me the option not just substitute. I an from NH so this was off route on a business trip for me. He said he is not the internet manager but would send him right up. After waiting around I just left. Nice store nice selection but the walk doesn't match the talk. And the customer service is horrible. read more
