Meh ~ Your typical overpriced "high-end" joint with giant plates and tiny portions. If you're looking for southern snob-appeal, then this is the place for you. It's also great for dragging new friends and coworkers, but be sure to bring a fat wallet. However, if you're hungry, stick with the endless shrimp at Red Lobster, or pig out at Golden Corral, or stuff yourself silly with salads and breads at Olive garden. That being said, today I discovered a new dish which I initially considered odd, SHRIMP & GRITS. What the heck? I always thought grits were for breakfast, but this was a pleasant surprise. Ultimately, the service was great, the wait staff was friendly, and the dining atmosphere was conducive to creative conversation. Give it a visit maybe once or twice. read more

Night two for me on a business trip to Anniston/Oxford and I wanted some good food with a bit of panache. The locals recommended a place downtown, but after reading the Yelps about it, I decided to come here because 1) we were not eating brunch 2) we were not having a wedding reception and 3) I am not yet a member of the AARP :) Driving up to this restaurant, it doesn't look like much. It's tucked back from the main street in a yesteryear strip center mall with a mismatch of businesses... some closed and some still open. Their Garfrericks sign looks like it was made at FedEx Office. Inside is a modern oasis of a restaurant with open kitchen. There is a small, but nice bar that we almost dined at, but we chose to sit at one of the seven seats overlooking the chefs/kitchen. I LOVE restaurant that let you see into the kitchen. One of my favorite restaurants in the world is in Tampa and they give TOURS of the kitchen at all times. We were warmly greeted by Emily, our server, and Jordan, one of the chefs. The kitchen is clean, not cluttered, and contains the most wonderful assortment of plastic tubs of fresh ingredients. The menu is seasonable and changes often. Reading the long list of choices, many of the ingredients are sourced locally. In fact, when we arrived, the counter in the kitchen contained lots of different fresh tomatoes. I felt at home because some of these were not "pretty" tomatoes - no doubt headed for the chopping board. I started with a "I Love Lucy" drink, which is vodka, triple sec, grapefruit juice and muddled fresh basil. Perfect for a warm summer evening! They love goat cheese here. I count three salads with goat cheese on them. My wife would love this place - I am slightly allergic to it :( I decided on the grilled melon salad to start. My coworker wasn't THAT hungry, but I asked if he wanted to split the salad. He agreed and Emily offered to split the salad in the kitchen. When they were COOKING the salad, I honestly didn't know that was what there were doing. I thought it was salmon on the grill. I even saw the chef put in on the plate, drizzle it with red wine vinegar and olive oil and didn't know it was our salads until they served it. It was honestly the best thing - and best for me thing - I ate the entire trip. The hickory wood gave the water melon, cataloupe, and honeydew GREAT smoky flavor. It also came with blueberries, feta cheese and red onion rings. I may try this at home! Here is another thing I noticed later about the kitchen - there are no heat lamps! When a dish is ready, it is plated and a steel cover put over the top. We were served a palette cleanser of green apples My coworker had the chicken entree, which honestly doesn't do it justice because there were lots of other things on the plate. I ordered the steelhead salmon, which was the one of the best salmons I have ever eaten. A big thick slice, perfectly grilled with salt/pepper and spices, was served with fried green and red tomatoes and fried potato wedges over fresh spinach. Oh, and did I mention that Emily suggested I try the made-that-evening watermelon martini?!? Basically, freshly pressed watermelon, vodka and mint. A perfect dessert! The food was exceptional. From the freshly baked bread to the sweet potato brownie, everything was above standard. I sampled the beef empanada, shrimp with quinoa and freshly baked breads brought out at the beginning of the meal. I ordered the vegetable plate with a side Caesar and sweet potato brownie for dessert. The empanada was was accompanied by a Spanish style rice with tomato and roasted corn on the cob. All delicious. The side Caesar was portioned well with fresh croutons and a rich, well balanced dressing. The veggie plate included the following: macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, roasted cauliflower, cornbread, purple hull peas, and squash casserole. I could go on about each item individually buy do not want my review to last that long. The sweet potato brownie was a unique and scrumptious way to end my meal. In summary, I do not think you can go wrong by checking out this hidden gem. I plan on becoming a regular. read more

A Five Star restaurant with a 5 Star experience. I arrived at Garfrericks at 815pm on a Wednesday night. The restaurant was nearly empty so I could sit anywhere. I accepted the offer to sit at the chefs counter which I will never turn down. Garfrericks prints their menu daily which proves that this farm to table restaurant is truly serves food that is as fresh as they say it is. After a glass if ice water and a baguette bread basket was delivered, I ordered a Caesar salad. It was delivered with homemade mini croutons and slivers if hard white cheese on top. I felt it was slightly over dressed but that's from a person who eats salad without dressing most of the time. I selected the pan-seared striped bass with plum sauce drizzle over spinach which was prepared to perfection. To the side were three slices of cooked plums and the plate was completed with an edible flower. The kitchen is immaculate, the prep chef friendly and the chef highly skilled and humble. The restaurant is also very clean, fresh, contemporary, and simple. Really, really lovely! My husband, a chef himself, would have been hard pressed to find anything wrong with the menu, ingredients, food preparation, execution, or presentation. It was that great! read more

A very nice restaurant atmosphere with friendly greetings and wait staff. Visiting on a Sunday the vegetable buffet was recommended by the polite young waiter. Great choice. Delicious! We ordered the oysters to start - Half Cajun and the other half garlic parm. We loved them both and will definitely order again! I got the scallop dish. Enjoyed the cream corn and veggies that came with it. Husband ordered the shrimp and grits. He liked mine better, as it was a large portion and he easily tires of the same texture. We were in from out of town and saw the mostly excellent reviews. Okay, you who said we could get more food at a Red Lobster, yes, we could get more, but could not approach the quality and atmosphere. This is not a chain, and had a uniquely inviting atmosphere, and the food was as good as I've had at high end restaurants in many major cities. Our server, Jarod, was enthusiastic and so knowledgeable about the menu and the foodie history of this restaurant. I had the pecan encrusted grouper, which was fantastic. My husband had the ahi, which was very good, but not as noteable as my dish. The wine and beer list was fairly vast and varied, with many local brews my husband appreciated. The fried oyster app was excellent, as was the bread pudding dessert. I highly recommend this place, and am amazed that such a place exists in the small town of Oxford, Alabama. read more

The restaurant looks good - hip decor, sophisticated menu - but the performance doesn't match. The first thing I noticed was the mold/dirt on the air conditioning registers, which may explain the musty smelling air. As for the food, the Caesar salad was overwhelmed with anchovy, the portion of redfish was laughably small , and our vegetables were over-salted to point of being inedible. To top it off, our feedback to the staff about our experience was greeted with arguments that we were wrong, rather than an offer to make it right. I've never experienced this response in an upscale restaurant. For $126 for two, it was an expensive disappointment. read more

Worth driving to this little town. Sophisticated style restaurant in Oxford. The wine list was excellent. I enjoyed a French Vouvray that was perfect. The food was beautiful and delicious. My husband had a colossal piece of grouper. I had incredible scallops served on a bed of wonderful corn purée with the best cauliflower florets, strips of grilled red pepper and snap peas. The ambiance is nice for it being in a strip mall. My son ordered a 12oz ribeye that was the most expensive thing on the menu and it was literally half fat and gristle. My husband and I ordered the quinoa and vegetable plate and mine was served on an appetizer size plate with about a half a cup of quinoa and maybe two thirds of a cup of oil filled vegetables. We had to order 3 baskets of bread. The staff was friendly and my daughter enjoyed her oysters. When we were talking about ordering I wanted her to get something more than half dozen oysters.
