I heard reports from other couples with the same background who had tried to adopt but were denied. I didn't want to believe those reports until I experienced it myself. While on the phone I repeatedly mentioned we weren't having children. Didn't seem to matter, got the same response of 'oh well maybe in 5 to 10 years you'll change your mind and then you're going to give the dog up.' Maybe in 5 to 10 years my house will burn down, what-if's and hypothetical situations are irrelevant. I respect the goal of this organization and I'm glad many dogs have found great homes because of it. Quite frankly, the person on the phone was rude and negative and the experience really left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm not upset we didn't get to adopt a dog, I'm upset because we weren't even given a chance.

Her home is one huge dachshund heaven - a big property owned by a family with a big heart. After my first dachshund died of kidney disease I called on Anne to be on the look see for another doxie for me. She kept in touch and then suddenly she had a smooth-coat that she had rescued from the city pound in Manhattan - high kill unit. Anne had already visited my home and checked out my references - we were pre-approved. We've had Coby for several years now (look on FB for Coby's story) and we've loved him every minute. True to her nature, Anne called me within 24 hours of Coby being home with us and she made a home visit within a few weeks to check for herself that he was OK. Got to love her for being protective of every dog she places. On a score card she is an over-achiever +A. One of the best 'dog people' I've ever met and known. Having said that...she is anything but a pushover. If your dog is over weight or has dental issues she will make a point of communicating to you that your dachshund's health needs attending to. Her first concern is for the well being of the dogs she has promised to find good homes for. Louise W.
