I mean, I've been to Robert Moses a ton but never to Fire Island, that is, until this past weekend. Being in the middle of October and at the start of the off-season, we barely ran into other human beings during as we explored through the towns and on the beach. Running along the shoreline and seeing nothing but sand for miles in each direction felt quite surreal and super peaceful. I LOVED how deer would just appear seemingly out of nowhere. I saw one that was huge and had massive antlers, which was pretty darn cool. I'm already planning my return back and am considering taking my little boat or kayaking there.. decision decisions!

First of all the parking - there is a very small parking lot at the park building in front of the sanctuary. Actually, you are supposed to park in front of the cemetery that we passed just before (The one with Roosevelt's grave). Otherwise, you take the extensive paths through a serene area infused with Theodore Roosevelt's love of nature. We did not see any birds on our brief visit but the overall tone of the park cast a peaceful spell over us at all time. The graduated steps are very well maintained here, in direct contrast to those at Cold Spring Harbor State Park down the road. There are lots of benches for walkers and circular seminar seating for those taking guided tours. Thr only sounfs here were the chirping of unseen birds and one dog at the end of the trail. It is a park that demands return visits and we will obey.

Joy is in charge of the plants and she's super knowledgeable. There's a building with one normal parking space and 3 handicap parking spaces. You can meet some cute critters, learn about the natural wildlife, buy merchandise that helps support this local gem, use restrooms, and sign up to volunteer for community programs. There's a beautiful fountain in the middle of the park and some benches surrounded by trees and smaller plants. Keep the fences closed as per their rules and happy walks!

went for first time on Sunday morning mid march. there were both large and small dogs in the large…read morearea but well behaved. we brought our two little dogs into the area for small dogs the first thing I noticed was it wasn't being well cared for at all. there was dog poop all over obviously the previous visitors didn't clean up after the doggie kids. it was ber unpleasant and we didnt stay long. someone should either monitor the situation on a regular basis or have some way for other owners to clean it up if they so desire. it was obvious that whomever visits the small area doesnt ever clean after their animal. just bc animals are "smaller" does mean that their poop is an much a problem as larger dogs.

One of the better dog runs on Long Island's south shore…read more Things it has going for it: - Plenty of parking (30 or so feet from run) - Has water for dogs as well as hanging bowls along fence, but you have to bring water during late fall, winter and early spring since park shuts water off - Plenty of room for dogs - Seating for dog owners - Plenty of shade - Has both a separate large & small dog area Things it has against it: - Ground cover is mostly sand, which can make clean up of a longer haired dogs a chore - No bathrooms near run for humans - Have to pay $10 on summer weekends to get into park if you are not a Nassau County Resident This is more like a 3.5 star run in my opinion. I have been to this park a few times, would probably go more often if I lived closer. The times I have gone the group of owners and dog were very friendly. Owners were attentive to what their dogs were doing and for the most part the run was free of piles of poop. One of the better dog runs on Long Island, upgrade the ground cover and this is a solid 4 star run. ***UPDATE*** - installed new fencing for both dog runs - concrete under seating and entrance areas - dedicated dog water fountains in each dog run Still needs better ground cover (right now it is just dirt and rocks) This is now a solid 4 star run.
