On a warm summer day when the beaches were filling up by 10 AM, we decided to do something different. We must have driven past this park a hundred times in our years on Long Island, but never noticed it. When we got there the parking lot was barely half full, and the human to park ratio in this immense land looked very good. Some nature trails on the island can be a disappointment, but this park was the exact opposite. Well managed side trails and scenic bridges were everywhere. Many places to just sit on a bench and reflect on the waters. We walked for about 90 minutes, and put this beautiful park on our hot list for a return in early fall. Highly recommended.

This was another great recent return visit "discovery," hidden in plain sight, and after years of planning a visit, I'm so glad we finally stopped by for a visit!! This hidden gem definitely has something for everyone, and we had a nice, warmer winter weather exploration, though I'm sure there's plenty to discover at any time of the year!! The old Smith Mansion near the entrance is a sight to see, and has plenty of interesting natural resource displays inside. I'd love to take a tour of the complete building, though apparently only a small portion of it is restored and open to the public. Their nature displays are a great resource for young and old, and they appear to have plenty of interesting events year round for the public. Take a leisurely walk on the trails, enjoy the sunset on the lake, and/or bring a picnic lunch... Not a ton of parking, so make sure you get here early on a nice day!! Enjoy!!

This State Park is somehow disappointing. Yes, it has several different trails for different length, but all trails were short (no more than 2.5 miles) and easy. We went in mid-November, most leaves were gone. Lots of crunchy brown and yellow leaves were on the ground. All paths were unpaved and rocky, but there were no uphills and downhills, relatively flat. The water in the pond was dirty. Not much to see in terms of scenery, but it was good exercise to just hike inside the park. Since there were so many different trails, the park was not crowded at all. The trails were marked, but the marks were confusing. $8 fee per vehicle, free for empire pass holder.

This is a nice little spot if you're too tired to travel to a bigger park. It does have a few trails, but relatively flat. You're very close to a few houses, which didn't help with the suspended belief aspect of walking in nature. Its a shame we didn't see much wildlife at all minus some ducks in a pond. The people were incredibly nice though. Again, if you want something rather local and its late in the day....why not?

This park has beautiful trails and you even get to see some animals. There are level trails depending on your hiking skill level. You can also go fishing and they even have a small nature museum on the premises that is free of charge. Great park for all ages!

What a Beautiful State Park. The trail's there are really nice. Great place to bring Children. The pond has Beautiful Wildlife. Great Place to have lunch. They also have a Museum there. I Love this Park.

Great for hiking. Nice easy trails for kids to take a leisurely hike. We saw a lot of wildlife including . . . . . (see picture). There's a little museum on premises and it's free of charge. I saw some people fly fishing on the lake. There is an $8 fee for parking though. No biking though.

great park for exploring. lots of deer especially on the red trail (saw two does and two fawns recently). Nice and quiet during the week, hardly ever other hikers around. At least two to three miles of unique trails, hang a right after passing the museum and stick to the North side of the park for some interesting flora. A little mosquito-y in the summer.

Upon arriving, my husband and I parked in the Forest parking lot, which had ample parking spaces and a map, laying out available trail options. We began with the Hilltop Meadow, which we completed fairly quickly. After, we thought we'd challenge ourselves a bit more by taking on the Forest Sanctuary. We enjoyed this trail, although we sometimes had to look over our shoulders to investigate the noises around us. Everything kept us on our toes, from squirrels to deer, chipmunks, and other wildlife. The terrain may be difficult for some, due to the tree roots and the uphill climbs, but other than that, it was manageable. We appreciated that there were several signs posted throughout the park, helping us to keep track of our location. Additionally, there were warning signs reminding us of the possibility of tick exposure. One thing is for sure: we kept it moving and thoroughly checked our clothing afterwards. My favorite trail of the day was The Mill Pond. I loved the well-paved paths and the overall layout. I could've spent hours here. I highly recommend this park for those who enjoy the outdoors.

Though I grew up less than 15-20 min. away, this beach was not in my township (Huntington) so we stuck to our own local N. Shore Long Island Sound beaches (rather than pay a craaazy entry fee). Off season, everyone's a resident of everywhere/anywhere, so a beautiful, sunny February afternoon was a PERFECT opportunity to check out Callahans. We had the whole place to ourselves, and my sister and I checked out the upper picnic area, the new/improved playground, and the wonderful views around the perimeter of the parking lot. Rumor has it there are other trails, but we did not see them, so we ventured down to the entrance to the beach to get a closer look at the BEAUTIFUL views... NOTE: I don't believe you can park in the little circle near the stairs leading down to the beach, though strangely enough, there are handicapped parking spaces there. This beach is many things: scenic, secluded, convenient if you live in the area, great for families, picnics, and golf fans, but it is definitely NOT handicapped friendly, unless you just plan to enjoy the view from above. There are MANY steps to get down to that beautiful beach, and you'd better be in reasonably good shape AND not forget anything in your car, because it's a TRIP up and down those stairs. While my sister and I didn't find the hiking trails that are supposedly there, we did hike the full length of the beach, a WONDERFUL walk all the way to neighboring Sunken Meadow State Park beach and back. BEAUTIFUL, invigorating, and very do-able, nearly 3 miles back and forth. Well worth the "ride!!" Some of the best things/places on Long Island are still free, especially if you go off season... Check this place out!!

Being completely self sufficient, Kings County Asylum boasted its own Vegetable gardens and dairy at its height, it also supplied its own power through a small private electric plant on the premises. Completely closing around 1996 it eventually was turned over to the state becoming a park in 2000. I found Nissquogue river state park to be a very interesting park to visit, the north end of the park offers a nice walking trail as well as beautiful views of the Nissquogue river with over looking bluffs and a small beach front not for swimming. You will find a marina on the property offering boat slips as well as a boat launch if you choose to trailer your boat in for the day and many places to launch your kayak from and travel the river. Most of the property appears to still be in a developmental stage as far as parks go. Walking the property is an explorers delight allowing you to check out the decommissioned hospital buildings and infrastructure some of which dates back to the late 1800's and early 1900's.
