I recently stopped in for an outfit for a wedding that I was going to be attending in a few days. I…read morerecently got married and visited a number of shops in the area. A lot of the sales people I encountered were pushy, and downright rude. Because of my past experience, I was dreading looking for a salwar kameez but the ladies that assisted me were very kind. I explained that I'd be attending my first Bengali wedding with my new husband who was accompanying me, and wasn't sure what I was looking for. They made suggestions and suggested I try on some things to get a feel for what I liked. While you really can't expect to be modest at any sari shops, these ladies did give me a little bit more privacy than what I've experienced before and it was appreciated. I tried on 4 different styles and modeled them for my husband before narrowing down what we wanted. Keep in mind that these clothes are NOT cheap. If you have some haggling skills, you can bargain your way down $100 - $200, which we did. That being said, we did end up paying $400 and while that included tailoring, it is still a hefty price tag. As in all shops, they will try to get you to buy more than you intend to and are a bit pushy, but not overwhelmingly so. All in all, I walked out with an awesome outfit that fit like a glove and would recommend this shop to anyone who needs their clothing fast. Otherwise, buy online and have it altered here to your preference and save a bundle!

Since at the time there was a 50% sale on blazers, suits, and long-sleeve shirts, I went HAM on the blazers and suits. Like went to the fitting room 3x kind of HAM! I usually don't write reviews for shopping experiences, but the associate working in the fitting room, Amy, was the best! The second time I was trying on clothes, I wanted to leave behind what I had in my fitting room just to exchange a blouse in a different size. When I came back to my room with the new blouse, I saw that she locked my room and left a door knob tag! So that was pretty awesome that she locked the door while I made that quick switch. Then while I was in the room (still the second round), I noticed the blazer I brought in was a bit big. I asked her to exchange it a size down, which they didn't have, but Amy got me 2 sizes down and BAM! That's how I found out I am now 2 sizes down. Talk about confidence booster! Finally, since I guess Amy saw that I was trying on so many suits, she asked me, "You know, there are a couple blazers in the clearance section. Do you want me to try to find some for you?" Sold, sold, sold. I've never had anyone in a store go out of their way for me, so I was blown away. Little did she know that I had scoured the clearance section first and didn't find anything -- but regardless, 100% satisfied with the customer service. Thanks Amy! And the rest of the store was great, too.

They do an annual sale around Black Friday where you get a reusable shopping bag with your purchase which entitles you to 10% off on all future purchases when you return with that bag - what more could you ask for as a customer? A few times throughout the year they'll do sales as well so be sure to keep an eye out on their social media for a heads up. They have three other Lockwood locations - Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Jackson Heights. Next door from this Astoria location they have a store called Lockwood Paper which has a large greeting card section, and any paper related products you could imagine (think pens, notebooks, wrapping paper, and more). They have cute magnets and pins as well and even carry ornaments here too. Then around the corner is Lockwood Style which has clothing, accessories, and more. I came here for an outfit for Navratri in October. Almost all the stores on 74th Street told me…read morethey didn't carry chaniya cholis for Navratri. They advised I go to more Gujarati populated neighborhoods in Long Island (sigh). I went into Aura and there were two guys and a girl all busy folding things and putting them away. They were all really attentive and asked me what I was looking for once I came up the steps. The girl took me to the back section where she pulled out several (5-8) sets. I apologized for my size (42-44) knowing that this would make her job more difficult. She said there was no need to do so and took out the different colors in my size. I asked for the price and she said $400 (yikes!). I knew I had to haggle, this is an Indian store after all. I told her I'd come back the next day after going to some other stores. She asked me what I was comfortable paying. I took a chance and said $100 because that's about the price I had seen on websites online like indusdiva.com and utsavfashion.com. She said that that wasn't possible and she could give me possibly for $200. I came back the next day after looking at some stores (one of which showed me stuff that Madhuri Dixit wore in the early 90s and for $200+ Really?) This time one of the guys showed me the outfits. He opened it up and held it against himself and on me. I haggled with him a bit and got it for $170! ALL PROS! 1. Good customer service: humble, sweet, and generally nice people 2. Store was clean 3. SO many options. Variety! 4. There were Caucasian people in the store and they were being treated just as nicely as I, a native Indian, was 5. They have saris for the general population, salwar suits like the Punjabis prefer, Lehengas for the brides, and chaniya cholis for the Gujaratis! 6. They take credit cards 7. They didn't charge me double as I've heard places like Armaan do! 8. They don't have a tailor on site, but they tell you places where you can get it done well Absolutely love this place! Will definitely be coming back here again. =)

I'm fully aware I'm not the part of their target audience, have worn anything here (#2), so it's worth taking this review with a grain of salt. Despite my lack of traditional Indian attire experience, I've come here with friends and family to shop for sarees. (#3) Whether it was for tourist shopping in Jackson Heights or because they were hoping to rock a saree for an upcoming Indian wedding, I've seen a fair share of different outfits here and some of the stuff they have is pretty impressive. It's not all sarees of course, there's a whole spectrum of things they specialize in -- shalwar, kameez, lehnga choly, punjabi suits, silk suits, and children's formal wear. If they don't have items in house, they'll have it specially ordered from the motherland or import fabric for a custom job. Customer service could always been a bit warmer, but I say this because I think there could be a better hand holding experience for first timers out there. The staff seems to be able to speak a number of languages / dialects, which include urdu, Hindi, Tamil, and Punjabi. I was told by others the prices here can be a bit on the expensive side, but I also don't have a ton of experiences shopping in other similar stores. __________ (#1) Nowadays, more like little Bangladesh. My purchases were wrapped beautifully and I received them in well made canvas tote with Hará's logo that I will definitely use and advertise the store.
