Wife has food poisoning (diarrhea) 5 times the next day after getting take out here. I really tried to like this place but I should have be suspicious with them keeping most dishes outside the chafing trays. Even the "hot food" wasn't really being heated enough to keep food at a safe temperatures. Food is cold (lukewarm at best) when served. The food looks like it's been left out all day and keeps getting reheated every day for a few days until it's all sold. Check out my photos (not their marketing photos). Secondly, there is a communication barrier with servers over the 2 days I had visited. I persisted to order $6.49 curry special but I don't know if the server wanted to push out his old food not selling but he ended up selling me more food I wanted and charged $12.xx plus tax. At that price I got 1 non veg and 4 veg on rice. But they didn't even give me the salad advertised on the menu that's suppose to come with the meal. I didn't complain because I wanted to build a relationship with local businesses but after the fact with food poisoning, I have to write this. Disclosure: I do eat south Asian joints a lot even in hole in the wall places so my body can handle a lot just not here. I recommend folks go to Babu's instead where they keep food hot. read more

Found a Indian Sri-Lankan cuisine takeout spot hidden in a small complex in Markham. They have variety of local Indian snacks and chips as well. We simply picked couples of dishes to go along with their brown rice. It is very special with soft and round texture. Their curry is flavorful - spicy yet delicious. The spring rolls are very crispy and delicious. The food needs to be reheated at home as it cools down quickly. read more

This takeout only place serves up Sri Lankan food via a hot table as well as freshly cooked, as well as snacks & groceries. It's pretty cheap: 100 masala chai teabags are $6.99. It gets 3.5. Got a mutton murtabak (stuffed egg & meat roti). Chicken is an option too. Overall it was decent though medium spicy was very spicy. It was quite heavy on onion. There was some green onion too. Got a nelli crush (Indian gooseberry drink), for only $2. The name was misleading as there was no crushed ice, but it was still very refreshing. There were some basil seeds for texture The roti special was good & big. It was supposed to have coconut, onion & chili but the onion seemed to be spring onion, there were only hints of chili & I couldn't taste coconut. There was a slight crisp though it was premade Mothaham was pretty soft on the outside & inside was sweetened coconut. It was not bad though the stuffing texture was a bit uneven. read more

Ganesh Takeout & Catering is facing really tough competition since it is just located less than 5 minute from Babu. Just like other Indian/Sri Lankan takeout, there is no line. But I have no problem getting services because I stood out like a sore thumb.... the only one that didn't speak the language. Curry Mutton, fried squid, eggplant, Curry mock vegetables and Sevai (thin rice noodle) was A-OK. Spicy and hot... my stomach felt burning warm the whole night. The set up here is not as organized, the food selection is not as good as Babu... so if I have the urge for more Indian food, I would have just drive North to get my fix instead of here... I ordered veggie patties and mutton rolls and i don't know what to say. Usually when you order short eats from places, they serve it warm but the patties and rolls were cold. The fillings inside the veggie patties was weird and looked grey which I've never seen in any Tamil store patty. The mutton rolls was way to spicy like a spice level that's too spicy while eating. I'm disappointed with the food and won't be buying food from this restaurant again. read more

If Sri Lanken and Indian food is what you're after - you've found the right place but.... You kinda need to figure out how this place works. If you've never been here before and if it's busy - you'll walk out after a minute after you walk in. There is no system, no way for anyone to know you were there first. No glimpse of a line up or any form of organization. What there is though is delicious food. My go to are the chicken biryani and the chicken curry and Roti. So how to order: The responsibility of knowing where you are place In order of arrival is squarely on your shoulders. If you don't know what place you are then I'm sorry - this place just isn't for you. You need to keep track of who arrived before you and who was there after. The biryani is perfectly cooked and the chicken curry is perfectly spicy. The Roti is fresh and is delicious. Unfortunately my curry chicken was served a little cold but still tasted great. The food is mediocre and the service is terrible. If you're not Sri Lankan you will definitely not be treated with respect. I was being charged extra for something that I normally get and called the man at the cash register out on it. He said that he clicked the wrong button while smiling like a child getting caught lying. This was during the dinner rush. I ordered a single chicken biryani. People ordered the same thing after me and was served before me. I had to wait 20 minutes for one single dish. That is the opposite of why I go for take-out. The quality of the food was bad when I got home. I lot of the rice was in chunks and inside was just white rice. If you have a chance go to this restaurant. Look at the backroom. Anytime rice is needed the chef will go to the back to get it. It is in terrible condition and it is incredibly dirty. It's visibly noticeable. The food was better than the now closed Babu just 5 minutes north. The wait time was a little long but the food came out piping hot and fresh. The lady that served us was warm and friendly she mentioned several times to customers that some food had to be cooked from scratch and to wait a few minutes more. My advice is to call ahead about half hour and arrive with the order ready for pickup. Will be back again. read more

The mothigams and sweets are alright and good for sharing with family and friends. However, to be warned, I wouldn't recommend their meat curries at this place because my uncle and I got food poisoning after eating chicken and mutton curries. read more

This takeout restaurant is over priced relative to other Srilankan takeout restaurants in the area. Up until an year ago I didn't mind paying the extra price given the quality of their food. However lately they are trying to trick customers into paying the same high price for poor quality or increasing their price for subpar quality. I recently bought srilankan boli/poli here and they barely had any stuffing in it. It is now super thing compared to how they used to make it and mainly just tasted like yellow plain roti. They charged $2 for it and it was certainly not worth paying that price for it. So disappointing. Don't trick your customers into paying high price for poor quality. read more

We love this spot for Sri Lankan takeout and catering. We ordered from Ganesha everything from snacks (mutton rolls, fish cutlets, meat/veggie patties/samosas), to dinner for two (dosa, string hoppers, pittu, plain and coconut rotis, rice and curry, and of course kuthu roti) to catering for 20+ guests at our place. The owner has always told us, anything you need/want, must call at least 20 mins prior and he will make it for us. On some items, the spice level can be varied. Medium can be spicy for some :) This place is small so I highly recommend you call first and place an order. If you don't know what you want, just ask for suggestions. I have always past by this place everyday. Yet, for some reason, I was never tempted to give it a try. With Jennifer's review, I felt that Babu's up the road was certainly more worth my time. On this particular day, however, I felt the urge to try something new. This place has been open for so long, despite Babu being up the road. They must be doing something right. Arriving around 7, their chef was hard at work, refilling the tray and fulfilling take-out orders. The smell emanating was simply delicious. It was not the most organized setup. One hot table, two display cases and the cashier counter. Various curries, roti, idly, puttu, dal filled buns, samosa, pattices, and other snacks filled the shelves. Prices for items were listed on the board above. At a glance, prices seemed comparable, and some lower, than Babu. The lady behind the counter was very nice and inviting. She answered all my questions with patience and a kind tone, even when other guests seemed to be piling in behind me. Certainly a change from the curt responses I get at other places. She even offered a couple of free samples of short eats that she could not describe fully; a welcome act. All was tempting, but seeing as I still had dinner to attend, I got a few samosas, and a fried modakam. The modakam was delicious. The other crust was still crispy, but the dough was soft and tender, with a slight chew. The filling was of coconut and dal, mildy sweetened and very aromatic. I haven't had one this good in a long time. The samosa were similarly good. While not big, the crust was crisp and flaky, and the filling well seasoned and spiced. The crust was not as thick as Samosa King's and not as thin as Babu's, but I like it better than either. There was a good amount of spice in the filling, enough heat, and the potatoes were still distinct. Very good. I will definitely be back. I am eyeing their rice thali, which is cheaper than Babu's. And if their samosas are any indication, I am sure the curries will be excellent as well. Can't wait. For now, based on the samosas and modokam, and the kind attentive service, four stars. read more

I asked for chicken biriyani. They said they don't have it and then said they can make it for me. The server came in just after 2 mins and I wondered how he made biryani in just 2 mins. Then I saw him mixing a separately cooked chicken with yellow rice and called it biriyani. It tasted so terrible and we had to throw it away so much so that was so oily and too bad!
