I recently visited Tonquin Trading while on a vacation to the Oregon coast. Not exactly the easiest size to find in a pinch. Tonquin didn't have size 16 either-- but the super, super helpful guy working there understood our dilemma, and gave us a recommendation of where we COULD find a size 16, in exactly the type/brand of shoe we were looking for. He saved us from driving around all day to every Famous Footwear trying to find something that might work. So. Although I didn't end up buying anything at Tonquin, I was really impressed (and grateful!) by their "can't-get-it-at-Macy's-get-it-at-Gimbels" attitude, which saved our vacation. If I go back (and I loved the area...I'm already planning my next trip), I'd totally patronize Tonquin with my outdoorsy needs!

I went to Seaside the next weekend and met Kat and Josh. They were very friendly and Josh was amazing in sizing me up (I think Josh has done this once or twice) for the right fit and suit for me as a windsurfer. They had to pull a rabbit, or perhaps 2, out of a hat to get these O'Neils to the store but it all worked out with a lot of help from other Cleanline folks that made it happen. The O'Neil Heat was a perfect fit for me and feels great! I can see why this store has been serving folks on the Oregon coast for 46 years.................well done!

This very, very old lady kept appearing literally a foot away from my daughter and I as we were trying to shop and would just stare and watch us. Never asked us if she could help us. I was so uncomfortable with her being on top of us, that I told my daughter to put back the $50 sweatshirt I was going to buy her. I mean, I was wearing a $200 North Face Jacket, my $175 Hooka shoes, and $400 coach purse. But this lady treated me as if I walked into her store with a trash bag on. They also have some stuffed animals, books, beach towns, lots of sweatshirts and so on. Prices are reasonable as well. Perhaps the most odd thing was a case that has some inexpensive tiaras in it. The Miss Oregon pageant is held in Seaside each year and in homage to that, this shop has a little case where they have some tiaras for sale. The woman working was very helpful. My kid is in toddler clothes so I was stumped when my friend said her six year old wears small, since they all seemed to big. She helped me find the youth small which I missed. No dedicated parking here; street only.

Every coastal town has the obligatory shop(s) filled with all things beachy - shells, mermaids, sea…read moreturtles, starfish, signs with slogans, lighthouses - but few rise above the level of cheap & tacky. Shorelines NW manages to be a touristy shop while providing a much better customer experience. The store is very large and well lit, the aisles are wide so you can wander and linger without feeling like you are stuck in an elevator with tons of people. Items are organized so if you aren't interested in children's toys you don't even have to walk to that area of the store. Interested in shells? Against the side wall are bins filled with shells of various shapes, types and colors. There is plenty of room to take it all in and make your selections. My grandmother always collected small shells and made jewelry with them so I spent a lot of time in this area and was happy to have the section all to myself! Of course they have the obligatory tie-dye which somehow has become synonymous with the beach, but their offerings were a step above other tie dye sweatshirts I've seen. The light blue & white was particularly nice, subtle, not too in your face. Mermaids and the beach also go hand & hand and at Shoreline, there are Mermaids of every skin tone and hair color so little girls can see themselves. Well done! They have a nice selection of affordable fashion jewelry, some in sterling, and of course many feature shells, sand dollars, flip-flops and other beachy items. Even though I'm not a tourist, I enjoy walking through the shop and looking at all of the offerings, often making a purchase.
