I happened to get parking nearby and always wondered about this place. Finally had my chance to check it out. Looking for interactive real games for my nephews, I browsed around the whole store. The employees were cool and asked me if I was looking for some particular. I told them the age range and they made a couple of suggestions and pointed me in the direction of the kiddie games. Found two great and unique games and the nephews loved them! If you're looking for unique, hard-to-find games, this is your place. It also has a dedicated throwing darts counter. I knew darts had a following but this corner has everything you'll ever need. Some toys and kites too. The prices are buck or two above big stores but the selection is hard to beat. They also have game events inviting their customer to come in and play each other. I didn't see any video games at all. A nice and unique small business dedicated to fun and games! A nice brick and mortar game store that I frequented. Sure, it'll never be as cheap as ordering online, but you get instant gratification and you get to hold the stuff first. Plus, it's easier to return stuff if there's a problem. They used to have a 10% discount membership card if you purchased a total of $100 of stuff, but they discontinued it. They also had daily events where you could play or learn new games although I never actually went to one. read more

This is one of the bigger game stores in the Bay Area. They definitely have a great selection of games to browse for. It's a fun place to go into for people like me who grew up on board games. read more

This spot is becoming my go-to spot for my D&D/Pathfinder and magic the gathering purchases. I went to my first Friday night draft with my best friend and we both had a blast and walked away more knowledgeable of our cards and overall was a great time. I want to try out another spot for FNM but games of Berkeley is again, looking like our go to spot. If possible I would recommend taking Bart as Berkeley sucks when it comes to parking. read more

The store itself is wonderful. Full of interesting games and is always well stocked for anything one might be looking for. However the last few times I have gone to the store staff members were kind of rude, and when I participated in a MGT draft some of the regular patrons were also less than friendly. all in all they are not living up to the potential of the shop in my opinion. read more

This is a great place to get presents for kids, adults, coworkers, anyone with half a brain. I'm especially happy to have a place to go to get games of strategy and chance as well as use-your-head puzzles for kids. It's a pleasure to have alternatives to video games and brand-name, heavily advertised garbage that children are mostly exposed to. You can find things in a range of prices and designed for many ages. Under the same roof, you can get busy stuff for long car trips, office birthday joke gifts, a nostalgia toy for yourself, even something for Dad. this place has all the stuff that you would expect it to have: board games, role playing games, magic-like card games, etc. right next to the downtown berkeley bart station. they have games for the full spectrum of personality types from D&D to party/drinking games (not that D&Ders don't like to party...) in addition, they have the best selection of jigsaw puzzles that i have found in the bay area; possibly the best i have ever seen. this includes a variety of types and sizes ranging from the small (20 pieces) to unfathomably large (18000 pieces; that's right 18 f'n thousand). another great thing about gob is their nice selection of darts: all kinds of weights, grips, and tails. finally, i recently came across their extensive stock of frisbee golf frisbees. i'm talking about around 50 different types of discs here. each disc is weighted and colored differently for maximum distance and control. now that's something i've never seen before. read more

Huge selection of games but a bit on the pricey side. I gave in and bought a board game from here because it was just one of those days.

I used to love this place back in the day when I would cut school, hop on bart and haul ass to the Berk to smoke and hang out. But even then I found the selection (while huge, mind you) to be a little Juvenile...even for me as a 17 year old. Jump 8 years into the future and I still feel the same way...although I do have a soft spot in my heart for puzzle/strategy games and this place has plenty. read more

Im going to level with you....i love AD&D. all throughout my life....and games and cards and puzzles, and roll-playing games of all sorts. unlike many small stores, the people who work there know their stuff, and always help. i have spent the hours of my child hood, and now with my son, buying dice, and figures, and games, and new things to have fun with. There are a lot of games here and it seems even the hardest to find games may be here. It is the perfect place for a college student to drop by prior to a game night. I give it 3 stars, though, because of the slightly higher prices here than elsewhere, and the lack of customer service. I did get to snag a free limardee tray, though (it looks like its from the 80s. maybe thats why it was free) with my Monopoly Deal purchase. But the guy at the register never offered it to me. Awesome place for the game fanatic! They have a lot, a lot of games here, including possibly the best game of all time: Settlers of Catan! They have most of the expansion packs, along with my personal favorite, BANG! Anytime I'm at Target or Wal Mart trying to find a more obscure game and they don't have it I get sad because Games of Berkeley probably has it. A little bit more pricey here as it's a mom and pop store but you gotta support the locals, right? The staff here is really nice and will help you find whatever you need. read more

I went here yesterday with a friend, he was going to buy a card game. As I walked in I noticed the room was covered wall-to-wall in games, toys, novelties. IT was a cool place. Some people playing a board game offered a match, when we said we didnt know how to play they offered to teach us. The people who worked there seemed pretty cool. We never spoke to an employee until checkout. I like this place, I'll def. comeback when I need some kind of wacky novelty! read more

The plus side is that this store is very well-stocked and has every game imaginable. The downside is that because there are so many games, it's hard to find what you want. Also, the games are priced a TON more expensive here than other retailers. read more

Wow. Lots of games, fairly well organized although it make take a few minutes to figure out the organizational pattern. Once you do, however, there are lots and lots of every time of game, including strategy games. Prices seem reasonable [several games are exactly what the publisher charges so on one hand you avoid shipping but on the other you don't get the advantage of the sales some publishers offer. this place is great for when you want to find a game that isn't your run of the mill milton bradley game. they have all kinds of unique board games and puzzles and stuff of that sort. Its fun to browse and tinker with their displays and stuff. theyre a bit pricey though, but i guess they can afford to be, what with their unmatched selection of games. I love supporting local business, and just moved to the area with a good paying job, but will likely no longer be supporting GOB. I have been in a few times before, and was once directed to their back gaming area by an employee. Henceforth, my girlfriend and I have quietly joined other gamers playing in the back. The area is en route to the bathroom, and no sign says "please ask for permission prior to using the game library". We had followed all signs and rules of all that was posted, including one that literally reads "EVERYONE IS WELCOME" Tonight, a red haired employee had come to the back, and very rudely "kicked us out" (I guess) after approx 1-2 hours of playing a card game with my girlfriend. He asked very curtly "do you have permission to be back here?" (mind you my girlfriend and I both are clean dressed, quiet individuals) My girlfriend and I looked at each other nearly in shock, and he quickly said "then LEAVE". Rude, extremely confrontational (if you were there you would get it, it made my girlfriend VERY uneasy), and just close minded. We are sitting in a game LIBRARY with tables and chairs next to them.. Are the games not meant to be played? As the red headed employee literally ran out of there, I asked how to get permission, and he directed me to a supervisor or manager. So I asked the supervisor what is going on, again nearly in shock and it somewhat seemed as if we were treated like criminals in front of other customers. He said something of the effect that it was getting late (it was 5:15), and nothing else. I guess he was the one to order to kick us out? Maybe do that yourself as supervisor. If asked politely, we would have had ZERO problem leaving. Like "oh hey we are understaffed etc etc can you guys finish up soon." Or have a sign in sheet or something I don't know. Just to order us immediately out was a very interesting choice. I had plans to buy the exploding kittens expansion on my way out, and snag a MTG beginner deck to get my girlfriend more interested in MTG, and hopefully get her out for FNM!! I'd likely give GOB another chance but my girlfriend already said she never wants to return. And I was just about to start attending drafts myself (moved in last week)...I also had plans to buy at least two games I saw in the library there, some chess variant that was tons of fun. Things could have been handled with some respect, courtesy, and CLARIFICATION. If I need permission to be somewhere in your store, maybe tell me first? Signs help with that. Very negative experience that ruined our night. PS I heard an employee say they lost a certain WOTC tier because they didn't run enough events, casual or otherwise. Well kicking people off your tables is a SURE FIRE way to never get me in for casual mtg. So odd. read more

Games of Berkeley is the first thought that pops into my head whenever I think about a game store. The selection they have is just incredible, from classic games like chess to role playing material, frisbee golf discs, and more boardgames than you and your Cranium team could shake a stick at. The attitude of the employees is kind of a crap shoot, but more often than not they're very friendly and pretty knowledgeable about their products. Parking can be a real pain too, but it's definitely worth it to be in a well-stocked and well-lit game store. read more

Lots of puzzles and board games and I still go there if I want to pick up something quick, but strategy and role players should look elsewhere. They used to be king of the strategy and role playing games, but they lost it a few years ago. Whoever buys for them now doesn't really know what they should buy, so I'm sure it doesn't sell well, and then they buy less in a downward spiral. Their staff is sometimes helpful, but too often they are either too cool for school or they are into their own little staff intrigues. It's still fine, but it was better for years and I hope it doesn't slip farther. read more

Each summer I come to the Berkeley area, one of the first places I visit is Games of Berkeley. They have a large selection of games, figs, toys, and puzzles. If you're into warhammer, the guys that play there are great to hang out with and friendly. If you're into euro games and the like, you'll enjoy the store! read more

That Dave guy doesn't know what's he's talking about. There are a great many strategy and RPG games in GoB, and they have only been increasing over the years. GoB tries to carry every RPG in print, and most strategy and german origin games. He must have only been looking at the front of the store or something. Maybe he was looking at used or out of print. If he asked the staff about what he was looking for, he might have gotten an answer. Sometimes companies halt manufacture of a game and you can't get it for several months. This is not the fault of the local store! If you compare the store to how it was 5 years ago, when the new owners took over, it has VASTLY improved. I can understand about staff complaints, but you cannot complain about the selection. read more
