After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I also was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. Parts Unknown The Comic Book Store in Greensboro, North Carolina is a perfect example. I immediately found a side street parking space and parked my pearl white Lexus there and walked over to the store. It was a pleasant walk and the building where the store was located had an interesting graffiti on the outside, side wall. Inside I was greeted by a friendly and very knowledgeable employee who has also been a good friend of the owner for years. He told me how the owner John Hitchcock had owned and operated this business for over 36 years with around 25 years in this location and how the business originally opened up in Cotton Mill Square in 1989. How Hitchcock had always had a passion for comic books and started collecting them when he was 10. He started selling comic books in a store downtown 37 years ago and this led to his opening his own store. Hitchcock's favorite comic book creator was Alex Toth, an artist who had been well known for his expressive line and masterful storytelling. Hitchcock and him had been friends and collaborated on a book called Dear John: The Alex Toth Doodle Book. He showed me a copy of the book that was being sold there. The store had an inviting atmosphere and as I walked through the store it was like entering another world. The uniqueness of this comic book shop was that it exclusively specializes in comic books and books about comic books. It had in its inventory some rare and expensive ones like The Invincible Iron Man selling for $2,000, a Green Lantern one selling for $1,500, and a Special 25th Anniversary Issue of the Amazing Spiderman selling for $1,200, among other well known and rare ones in excellent condition. College students enjoy visiting the store because it's like a live history museum of comic books and also carries many of the current looked-after ones. And the store brings back happy memories to old timers and makes valuable merchandise accessible to comic book collectors of all ages. I highly recommend it if ever your in the area. At any given time of the day there are people in there gaming and having a great time with a family atmosphere. Micheals Marvels also has retro arcade-style games and a Grabber machine for a touch of nostalgia. I could spend hours in there looking around and still not see everything. Well this trip, our friends invited us to join them there. All my husband ever told me about McKay's was that it had books and records and he and this same friend would spend hours and hours and lots of money at their previous location. On the way over, my husband told me I'd probably see lots of things to buy. I seriously doubted him. Told him as much. So at first look I'm thinking "mom & pop, but bigger." I didn't grab a cart. "Ah! I aint buying nothing", I said to myself. I wander. All I see are stickers, and old electronics and I'm like, "Oh, a thrift store"...THEN I SEE IT... ALBUMS! And as if guided by an audiophilic angel, I immediately start filling the lower tier of my friend's shopping cart. Seriously underestimating this place, I eventually had to grab my own cart. I was a woman possessed by the power of the phongraph! I kept trying to force myself to put something, ANYTHING back. I tried but whatever I picked up ended up in the cart. I'd walked away from the albums. I thought I was done! Then I noticed the crates of 45's! BRUH! Within 15 seconds I was cradling 13 of them in my arms. THAT WAS THE FIRST CRATE! This was getting ridiculous. I had to stop. I refused to look thru a second crate. I turned to my husband for help... Surely he could snap me out of this spell... NOPE! He'd wandered off. When I found him he was waist-deep in his own mania. I knew hope was lost when he handed me an 8 track cassette tape! He wanted me to buy everything I'd chosen! I did the mental math. OH MY! OH MYMYMYMY! OK. We've got to be finished, then I noticed a book my friend had pulled. I immediately began lovingly accosting her, begging her to show me where she found this gem! Sadly, it was the only copy. HOWEVER... What she ended up doing was walking me over to Pandora herself, and me being the curious soul I am, took a sledgehammer to her infamous box, happily losing myself in the stacks. When the fog cleared, I had "somehow" acquired two math books and three political novels. In short order the lady on the loudspeaker warned us to bring our selections to the register as they were closing. They close at 10pm. TEN P.M.! WE GOT THERE AT 5:30! How da heck did 4 + hours fly by that fast? Was it a time slip? The Matrix?... THANOS?! All I know is that, here I sit, nearly 5 hrs later, $200 lighter, surrounded by 'all-of-the-things' and as happy as a pig in... Welp, you get the picture! Oh ya bet ya we'll be back!

Fun fact, I made my first comic purchase here about 6 years ago. Since my last visit, the layout appears to be easier to navigate. The space is made up of about three different rooms to explore, so I didn't feel cramped or as if I was invading anyone's bubble. The staff answered my many questions and even attempted to assist me in recalling a title I was having trouble finding. Which I later identified. The parking was a bit hectic on a Friday afternoon. I was in and out within a matter of minutes. I initially dropped in for the New Bloodline comic but also decided on the Scarlet Witch while browsing. My purchases came out to $9.59. While the prices were very good, the service was not much to rave about. I was standing at the counter a good 10 minutes or better, waiting to have my comics rung up. Then, when the guy came up, he seemed kinda lifeless and bland. In addition to that, there were dead bugs along storefront window sill, as well as dust about the store.

When asking for prices, on Magic the Gathering singles, I used the same app to check prices that he did, but he quoted prices that were arbitrarily high so that the the 40% off worked out to slightly above average prices. I requested the price of a sealed booster box. These are roughly 100 dollars at every store and online. Again, he told me it was 100 dollars after the discount was applied. Either he was being deceitful, or they charge 170 dollars a box. Both of which are not okay. It does not matter, I will not return.

Found myself here looking for a couple used cookbooks I wanted…read more Let me tell you, this place is a lot bigger than you think a used book store should be. They also have so much more like collectibles, musical equipment and much more. You can definitely kill a few hours here if you aren't careful. So much to see. I did find a couple books I wanted at a good price. I also found a used computer keyboard I needed. The books are somewhat organized but finding specific authors can be challenging. Their book collection is extensive. The staff was friendly and there is plenty of parking. I'll be going back to spend more time. I didn't have a lot of time to spend. If you're into books, and more, check it out
