This place is a LOT to take in, but in a good way. As a book lover, Funko POP collector and a game enthusiast-this place was worth the trip. An hour or two browsing the vast selection of books at McKay's is honestly one of my favorite ways to pass time. The store is massive and carries used books of every genre, as well as gently-loved puzzles, Funko characters, Squishmallows, toys, vinyl, movies, board games, CDs, video games, etc. It's a really fun place to browse and it has something for just about everyone. The store is organized pretty well considering how much inventory they have. My only complaint as a buyer is that most items are overpriced. For example, a used paperback copy of TJ Klune's House in Cerulean Sea is $17 and a lovely used puzzle I was looking at buying was $15. I would rather support McKay's than big-box stores or Amazon, but in this economy it is also hard to justify spending $5 - $10 more for a used version than I would a new one elsewhere. That being said, every now and then, I find a really good deal at McKay's. I purchased a paperback copy of Less by Andrew Sean Greer for 25 cents, which made my day. Selling books here can be slightly disheartening. I recently took in a stack of 18 books, including a popular hardcover which was being sold in the store for $17 at the time, and I only received $13 in store credit for the entire stack. I am not sure how this compares with other stores that buy used books, but in the future I will probably only sell items that I would have donated anyway so that any store credit, no matter how little, feels like a little bonus. read more

Love this place. Always great to get games, figures and manga. Always something new when you come here. Great price on selling. Do be prepared to be sold non working electronics and denied a refund for not having the box it was in. (Even with a receipt). Which made me end up buying 2 ps2 slims for around 100 each. This facility is HUGE. Plenty of variety from pretty much anything you can think of. Nostalgic, vintage, or even some good/newer items that they have for sale. A vast offering of Funko Pops for sure - some fairly new, but mostly a lot that's been vaulted, so it's nice to see these pieces. Plenty of other toys, games, books, vinyl, electronics. The service has been really good as the selling process is pretty efficient and fast (I've gotten a quote/finish under and hour before) Only gripe is that I've been shopping here since its inception a few years ago and notice the price of funk pieces have gone up and not really of great value like it used to. The store is a wonderland of books, puzzles, games, and more. I was able to score six books for $9.61. The majority of the books I purchased were hardback so this was a great deal. Almost every other aisle has a category chart on the end that shows the location for that particular genre. The chart was helpful, but the problem that I had was not knowing how they categorized the books on my list. I wish they had a system that logged all of the inventory and I could type in an author and see what genre or category they'd fall into. I asked the guy at the register if there was a secret sauce to their coding to be able to better find books, but he seemed to have never heard the phrase secret sauce. I chose a different wording but he seemed a bit confused. Overall I spent about and hour and a half here before I got tired of trying to find books from my list and carrying my haul. I did try to exchange a text book but they rejected my trade. After lugging my books around I found out they had carts or you can just bring a tote bag of your own. Six books for under 10 dollars is a great value and I definitely have enough reading to last for a while. I look forward to returning to see what other gems I can find. read more

Who doesn't love a huge building full of books, right?! And that's exactly what you'll find here! What's lacking is a fair price on all of their books. I am a book of the month member and some of the book of the month selections are more than having the actual membership which makes absolutely zero sense to me. You will, however, find a bargain on lesser known authors. I thought how the books were split into categories was also confusing, I never could find historical fiction that I was looking for. They have a huge toy section but the stuffed animals were $20+ dollars so we skipped that. They also had a massive section of puzzles and did find out for our daughter for $7 which I thought was a fair price. Overall not really worth the prices, I'd rather stick to book of the month or a locally owned bookstore. read more

We love McKay's in our family. This was our first time at the Mebane location and it didn't disappoint. If you're on a road trip on I40 highly recommend for a bathroom/ street break. They even have a great covered area with picnic tables and a spot to walk your dog. Once you're inside it's the best little treasure hunt for books, puzzles, games, vinyls, and a crazy collection of funko pops. Prices are great and they have absolutely every genre. We had seen their ad in a local paper and made a trip out to Mebane especially to visit them. The place is huge and has plenty of books, CDs and video games. As someone who frequents used CD sales at our library, I was happy that their used CDs are alphabetized (so much better than just rummaging). I ended up with several CD purchases and have recommended this place to others. I can't speak to what they pay out for books/CDs that you sell them but apparently that is another service here. I really miss having an Edward Mckay's closer to where I live. So much so that I really enjoy my trips to Mckay's. I did notice the prices of some things are a little more pricey as time goes on but don't let that deter you. (Everything is getting pricey.) IF YOU HUNT AND SCAVENGE through the bargain books and movies you'll find something. ($.95 movies and games and $ .05 books.) I say it ALL THE TIME, but TRUST ME. They have POP! Figures, vinyl records, cds, they've got a little of a lot and a lot of everything. (I'm cute, huh? lol) Every time I go I spend about $100. Mckay's IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE A DIAMOND in the rough. Ive been to McKay's before in other places, but never this one. I didn't even know it was so close. Only a 30 minute drive from Durham! It was spacious and clean! You can also sell and trade items with them as well which is awesome. I love this place. Most of the old DVDs are around 95 cents, some are up to 4 dollars or 6 dollars. I didn't see anything above that but there might have been. I ended up buying 17 DVDs and 7 cds! I spent a lot of time so I didnt get to the book section but I will next time. Great place! This place was a surprise. I remember when they were in Raleigh, but they were nowhere as large. We had a really great time and it was fun to explore someplace outside of the triangle. They have a good tabletop selection and I found some really nice art. Prices vary some things were well priced and others seemed a bit overpriced, but I am not a collector. My goal was for my son to get some manga to catch up on his summer reading and that was a success. read more

My review is in the form of a question. What's the difference between McKay's and Goodwill/Salvation Army regarding the unloading of your books and CDs? With Goodwill you know beforehand that you are donating the books/CDs; so, you don't expect anything back except a tax deduction receipt. With McKay's, they invite you to sell your books/CDs making you think you will score something in return. But, what they don't tell you is that they, too, give you (near) $0 for anything you bring in. I brought in 150 vinyl records. They took 140 of them...that's the good news. The bad news is that they paid $0.30/disk. From now on, I will simply donate items to Goodwill. I'd prefer getting $0 while helping those less fortunate than myself vs. getting ripped. Has everything from board games, toys, to books, CDs, Vinyls, DVDs, gaming systems, video games, vintage clothing and so much more! Also can appreciate how reasonably priced the whole store is, snagged myself some vinyls for under $20, a CD for $3 and DVDs for $0.85! Also can appreciate the many "build your own Lego" stations as I did spend shamelessly over 30 minutes building a little Lego man. Possibly the biggest used bookstore I've ever been in! I was impressed with the size of this place before I even walked in the door. I'm a big fan of bookstores, so it's no wonder my local friend wanted to bring me here--it's a sizable landmark all its own. Large shelves fill much of the space, and among these you can find a wide selection of books. As with all used bookstores, selections and availability varies; in certain sections I found less than I hoped for, but in others I was almost overwhelmed with options! Both me and my friend had to put some of our picks back in order to keep our haul reasonable. The organization of books perplexes me slightly. In certain sections--Sci-Fi/Fantasy, for instance--the alphabetical ordering seems to start over several times without any clear signage. This isn't a huge problem, in fact I found it to make the search for a particular author more fun, but I could see someone walking right past their desired book very easily. The service was quick (despite the crowds) and accommodating. As for prices, I'd have to say this is on the low end of average for a used book store (meaning you get a lot of good books for cheap!). All in all, I can see why this bookstore is enjoyed by the locals, and I hope to come back to load up once I finish the books I bought here. read more

This place is amazing and a great place for book lovers and other collectors. Theres something for just about everybody... Books, DVDs, VHS, video games, board games, collectibles, musical instruments, legos by the bag, toys, stuffed animals... they have just about anything and everything. Take a trip down memory lane with childhood favorites long forgotten. You can bring in you gently used/no longer need items and earn in-store credit and/or cash. While they can be selective on what they take and/or compensate, something is always better than nothing and store credit id always more advantageous than cash. McKays is so popular, on our last visit, a customer asked my husband to take their picture with store in background. This store has a loyal following, so anticipate crowded aisles/areas and anticipate some wait time for trade-in evaluations and/or to check out. McKay just moved to Mebane from Greensboro. The store is huge. This was my first experience with purchasing from them. I was surprised at the variety of products they offer. I bought several Blu Ray dvd sets. Downton Abbey, 24, to name a few. Great prices. My grandson bought a Led Zeppelin vinyl album for his father and a Johnny Cash cassette for himself. Lot of electronic games, thousands of books, guitars, used electronic devices. They are super efficient. We will be returning often and saying goodbye to eBay. I just visited McKay's for the first time yesterday! It was a lot of fun going through all of the books and seeing what my friends and I could find. It felt like a treasure hunt! The value for most of the books are great! I did find a few books that had stickers from Ollie's or Target that were cheaper than the price McKay's had on them, that felt a little odd to me. In the end, I managed to find 5 really good books and 4 cookbooks. Most of the cookbooks were on $.75! You really can't beat that! I only paid around $17 for 7 books! If I'm ever in the Greensboro area again I will definitely be back! The hunt is one of the fun parts about this store. I just wish some of their hardbacks were appropriately priced. read more

Definitely NOT our first time here as we are both avid readers, but I just realized that I've never actually rated and reviewed this place For starters, they have super strict policies when it comes social distancing and wearing of masks. If you are found not wearing one, a member of the staff will ask you to put one on. I have never found the space to be dirty, but be prepared to step over Legos since some people don't find it necessary to clean up after themselves. You can pretty much find anything you want to watch, read, or play with. They also have a nice supply of electronics including Apple watches, Fitbit Versas, as well as game stations and games. They have a great selection of homeschool curriculums also, which has helped me and homeschooling my four children. Plus, you can buy, sell, and trade your own things too. read more

A huge lover of McKay's, so I'm here quite a bit. Almost exclusively for the books, although I appreciate the other sections (music, games, etc.) The Greensboro store doesn't have anywhere near as much of a selection as the massive Winston-Salem location, but still lots of great finds. The space is fairly small, which can make browsing the rows of books a challenge when there are a lot of people there. The parking lot is a little pain-in-the-assy during peak times too, with some blind spots, narrow pavements and a turn-around situation that can get tricky. All of that aside, it's a wonderful place to stop in, especially if you're a book lover who appreciates great prices and unique finds. read more

I absolutely adore McKay's and go almost every weekend. I have sold lots of items and always feel they gave me a reasonable amount of money or store credit in return. Their selection of books and CDs is to die for. I was going to leave a 4 star review just because I believe some of the prices (especially for very scratched vinyls) are a little ridiculous, but after reading the review about the Barnes & Noble thieves I've decided to drop it down to 3. My partner works at the B&N at the Friendly Center and it is not uncommon for people to steal bags of vinyls and albums just to sell them at McKay's. If you are going to own or manage a consignment store then it is your responsibility to do it safely and check ID. Plato's Closet and Uptown Cheapskate do not let you sell without ID and you guys should bring this practice back. It is very unethical to accept stolen goods just to get your sales up. read more

I made a little under $200 with my recent trade in, that I otherwise would have donated. Personally, that is what I come to McKays for. The timing is minimal, staff is helpful.
