The books inside are individually priced, while the books outside are discounted to 10 or 25 cents based on which side it is on. I could have spent hours there. After selecting way too many books, I took them up to the counter to check out. As the friendly employee rang up the books, we chatted about D&D. Just be prepared, it's an older building and it felt that way once inside, but they were very busy too. If it had not been so cold out we would have perused more of the $.10 books outside. We definitely will go back for that because there's lots of bargains that we had here. They sell a variety of items here it's worth checking out. read more

I can't believe I've never been here before!! As soon as I pulled into the parking lot and saw all the books outside, I knew I would love this place. They had a wide variety of different authors and genres, and although initially I had a hard time figuring out how the books were categorized/sorted, the workers were very helpful, friendly, and eager to show me around. I was very impressed with the helpful service, bookish atmosphere, and fair pricing of the books, but what impressed me the most was the quality of the books! I have been to many used bookstores before, and I think the books at Reader's Corner were some of the best - if not the best - quality used books I've ever seen. They had so many nice, new, seemingly-pristine hard cover books on the shelves, and most were less than $10, which is an incredible deal. I couldn't leave without buying something of course, but now that I know 1) that this place exists and 2) that they buy back/offer store credit in exchange for used books, I am certainly going to become a regular here! read more

We stopped by today, and right as we walked in, an employee was speaking very loudly about how she felt assaulted by a regular customer. She said she'd only worked there a week, and of course everyone deserves a safe workplace -- no question there. For context, she spent most of our visit venting to her coworker, repeatedly saying the customer's full name and talking about how it "needed to be escalated to management." This was all happening out on the floor, loud enough for every shopper to hear, and she wasn't working during it. It was so uncomfortable that we didn't even feel okay approaching the counter to ask for help finding a book. What made it stranger was that after the conversation ended, she just sat on her phone instead of helping around the store. I fully support staff and safe environments, but the way this was handled came across as unprofessional and really affected the atmosphere of the store. read more

Our new favorite used bookstore! It's not often my wife and I both find what we want in the same bookstore, but they had everything and more. A highly impressive selection of Science Fiction and Fantasy, Philosophy and YA. Prices were really good compared to many used bookstores. Here's how my first visit there went down: As I enter I hear the owner complain to some buddy-boy about the customer he was on the phone with, making fun of the old person for reminiscing about a book instead of getting right to the title. Guess the owner really shares a love for books, huh? Then I go to ask a question, and he sees me but makes me wait as he continues to chitchat with buddyboy. Finally he addresses me and I ask if there's a black friday deal going on. He says no. I go to leave but then I hear buddyboy say, "But there is a black friday sale" and the owner goes, "yeah, but not for him." I turn around so they know I heard them and the owner smiles like a toddler caught with shit in his pants, "um if you spend a hundred you get 10% off." Shop anywhere else but here. Hell, ebay has better prices, shipping included, I checked! This local shop does not deserve your support, he *hates* you, and he makes fun of you all, I promise you that. read more

This is the best book store in Raleigh. I cannot recommend it enough. They have an outside collection on 10 and 25 cent book and I've found some good stuff in there. There is also a 1$ book section. I really enjoyed this used bookstore, chock full with books of all types - trade paperbacks, hardcover fiction, classics, and tons of different categories that you'd expect, like food, travel, art, and even comics and some bric-a-brac. The shelves are packed together pretty tightly, so browsing isn't as comfortable as it could be, but that also means that you'll overlook some treasures that you might pick up on a future visit. A massive wall of books outside offers more books for cheap. There is a small but inviting selection of CDs, LPs, and DVDs (though I wish they'd had more classical music LPs...) that are priced to move. I found some great old jazz LPs that were in good shape, for 25 cents. The CDs I bought were all in great condition and pretty hard-to-find examples, and under $3 each. I'll definitely stop by in my next trip to Raleigh! read more

The Reader's Corner is my favorite used book store. I was a frequent customer during the 10 years that I lived in Raleigh and now that I live in Central New York I make a pilgrimage to the Reader's Corner every time I come down to visit family. The owner and employees are friendly and knowledgeable. The selection is excellent. The atmosphere is laid back and cozy. The facade of the store is lined with outdoor bookshelves. Each book to the left of the door is 25 cents and each book on the shelves to the right of the door is 10 cents. If you visit after hours you can shop the outside shelves and slide the money through a slot in the door. Outdoor book sale revenues go to public radio. read more

I really enjoy going to Reader's Corner. I've gotten some great books for a reasonable deal and the organization of books in the store is really easy to navigate in my opinion. I brought my daughter in a few weeks ago and she was looking for one of her book club books. She asked one of the men working there where it might be and he walked away and found it immediately- on top of that it was a good price for an almost new book. The one thing about this place that I wish could be better is the space- it can get cramped in there when they're busy (10 or more customers) and some isles are hard to look through because your back is pushed up against the parallel bookshelf. Overall, it's a very cute store with good resources and approachable employees who know what they're talking about. There's a lot of character to the space with old notes and photos taped to the end of every shelf and the large selection of books outside (covered by an awning) are dirt cheap and fun to look through. I am visiting the area and stopped in this wonderful shop. The selection was great with some books I had never seen before in my life...and I've been to A LOT of used book shops, lol. The people behind the counter were kind and funny. Anyone who makes a reference to the TV Show "Community" is awesome in my book...yes, I have a book. I absolutely love this place. So many books, piled high, great prices and a knowledgeable staff. You have to go to truly understand the charm of the place with the clippings taped up on shelves and seemingly endless supply of books. While some may find it cramped I think it's exactly what it should be. The staff has always been very friendly with me, but I will say that at times there are some louder conversations taking place with a bit of a "holier than thou" tone to them. As for selling books for a fair price, I would not know as I am a bit possessive of my own books and only come here to purchase. Would highly recommend for any book lover. read more

Love this book store! It's not commercial and doesn't focus on making the most money off books. All the books are affordable and shelves are practically overflowing with a variety. The staff are very friendly and chatty and If you can't find your desired book chances are they'll be able to pin point it for you! I also really like the credit system you can utilize after donating books, it's very clever and I have benefited from it! I make a weekly trip here to look for books on my list. They have everything from old school playboys to true crime to modern biographies. They also have a great kids and teenage section as well as cookbooks, vinyls, CD's and prints. They're always taking in books so bring them in and have them take a look. They'll offer you cash or store credit. The guys that work there are always super helpful too, and great to be around. They're very welcoming of customers and the occasional dog that strolls in. read more

Everytime I'm on hillsborough street this shop has caught my eye. It's a wuanit used book shop that has every genre you could think of. But Readers Corner was recommended by a friend as a great place to check out. Had no idea they've been around since the 70s! This place had a crazy huge selection with all sorts of great books of every variety! Prices range from 25 cents to $10 or even higher for the vintage books they have throughout their shelves. Terrible owner. When I presented the books I wanted to sell he looked at and said "I'll give you 12 dollars for them". This was fine. It's what happened next that I have a problem with. After telling me he would pay 12 dollars, he immediately looked at an employee that was standing by and and said with an obnoxious smile " I have no shame, right?" I ask the owner this- why say this in front of a customer? Do you like treating your customers this way - "this way" meaning having such a cavalier attitude as to demean your customers? And what were you trying to prove? Your arrogance in being cheap? Do you always need an audience to show off your ridiculous ego? I hope you feel good now. I really hope it was worth it. Keep on doing this - continue trying to humiliate your customers and see how far you get in your business. I'll end this by saying that it is pretty pathetic that the only way this owner, a grown man no less, can feel good about himself is by belittling the very people that contribute to his livelihood. read more

Best used bookstore I found in the area so far, hopefully not to last. Unfriendly staff, with exception of the Australian gentleman, although they were helpful enough to guide me when requested. Mathematics section is weak, especially physics, where the absence of advances over the last 50 years with regards to string theory and quantum theory Is overlooked or simply unknown to the staff, who generally do not stock books in this realm printed prior to 2000. This store could definitely use a larger area, if they care enough to provide the variety over an efficient profit. Raleigh deserves something bigger. read more

My mom recently passed away and she was an avid reader. We found some older books and we took some of the older books to Readers Corner to get their value and possibly sell them. One of the books was Gone With the Wind and was a numbered printing. The employees went thru many books and offered a few dollars. I told them that when we had looked up the books online the prices had a wide range and was not sure their real value. They said there was a big difference between what they are really worth and what people are listing them for. I made the giant mistake of trusting they would offer a fair price and let us know what they're really worth. I saw today the exact same numbered edition we sold them for a few dollars, they are selling it for $295. If you are wanting to be treated fairly on your books sales, don't trust this business. They took advantage of us because we made the mistake of trusting they would be fair. It's my mistake for trusting a them. No telling what other books they misled the value. The part that is sad, we had told them about my mom passing and they still took advantage of us. read more

There's a lot of foot traffic, and the proximity to the university helps with the book flow! They also carry vinyl, CDs, and DVDs. This is the used book store by which I judge all other used book stores. My Platonic Book Store. It is dirt cheap and if you're willing to read a ratty copy of a book, you can find almost everything. I'm with Eric, it's super inexpensive but I have a hard time leaving without spending 20 bucks or so. Tiny store, busting at the seems with books. The staff has virtually no turn over so you can get to know them over the years. The musty smell of once-loved books and found photos and letters makes this place one of a kind. Though it may be small in size, the selection is huge and the prices are outstanding. The front of the shop (outside) hosts extensive bookshelves packed with unusual books & paperbacks. Excellent fiction section, wonderful coffee-table books and a nice collection of childrens & young adult books. A fabulous dollar table sits adjacent the counter where I've found quite a few treasures! What I especially love about this bookstore are the owners' personal touches: pictures, letters, interesting literary documents and just plain funny stuff are posted on the endcaps of all the shelves. This bookstore is a gem! I can't even get in the doors without first finding something great on their $.25 and $.10 shelves. Once I peel myself away from those shelves (usually already loaded down with books), stepping inside is like entering another world. This bookshop is packed and the small aisles always give me a sense of secrecy or a good close feeling of being completely enveloped by all the books. The store is divided up into genres and each section is alphabetized by author. So few used bookstores take this step, but I find it really makes my experience go from good to great. It makes it so much easier to walk in with a specific book in mind and actually find it instead of hoping to chance upon it. I've noticed that because the aisles are narrow many customers never look below waist level. Well, don't forget to take a knee and see what gems others are missing down at the bottom! Another unique thing about this store is the audiobook rentals. I recently used this service for the first time and have to recommend it! You find an audiobook you like, give them your name and number at checkout, pay a small rental fee (mine was $3) and get to take the audiobook with you for as long as you like. I would warn you to watch out for abridged audiobooks -that seems obvious but I got so excited about finding a title I was looking for that I overlooked the fact that it was the abridged version. Let me say some things about the atmosphere of this store. The small aisles and tall end shelves make it feel cozy and comforting (to me, but maybe that is because I'm a book freak!). I love that posted on every available space is some type of random cartoon or quote or bookmark or postcard. There isn't really a great way to describe all this paper ephemera or the feeling it lends to the store, but reading and seeing each little piece is always one of my favorite parts of visiting. Another thing I love is that they usually have some sort of great music on - not top 40, not best hits of yesterday, today and tomorrow, not elevator music. Last time I was in it was some mellow jazz - Ruby Braff & Ellis Larkins. Sometimes it really is about the little things, and good music makes this store stand apart in one more way. I'll finish by saying that this bookstore is a total experience. From the courteous staff to the organized shelves to the great selection and nice atmosphere, going into Reader's Corner is one of the best ways to spend an afternoon for the booklover. You're sure to leave loaded down with great books, half of which you didn't even know you wanted! I can't wait until my next visit! read more

Who can SHOP at a bookstore when it's closed? Not anywhere but at the Reader's Corner. On Sunday as I waved to the guys goodbye as they closed up shop, I begun to poke my nose. The right side of the store (outside) is 10 cents and the left is 25 cents. I know, I know, I didn't believe it either. Luckily, I walked away with 4 books and payign a whopping buck for them. Nothing makes a happier shopper than great steals. Some books are a little old, some are the original copies which means if the copy was re-edited the ones before are the ones sold here. Great little place to come and find some fluffing for your bookshelf. read more

This review is based entirely on their focus/selection on academic books in the humanities and social sciences. This bookshop reminds me of Bart's in Ojai. I don't know which one is older, but Bart's in Ojai like The Reader's Corner has a selection of books outside the shop to which readers can browse and buy from after the store closes. I like that concept :) Now, about their selection of academic books in the humanities/social sciences. Today, I went to take a look at their anthropology, sociology, African studies, Black studies, philosophy, and religion sections. Not bad, though not as good as Nice Price Books in Carrboro. This should be qualified with the following though: apparently, according to one of the shopkeepers there, they have a warehouse for more expensive used books so if you're looking for a particular book, ask them. They keep an inventory online (you can browse that on the web). So, their physical browsable selection is not as good as Nice Price Books in Carrboro's, but they may actually have a wider inventory (I don't know). They didn't have the two books I was looking for though. read more

Be warned...I try to support my local businesses but...they sold me a 2 cd set with 2 copies of disc 1 and when I went back for a refund the next day (because they guarantee the quality) I was given a store credit and not my money back (this was not explained during the sale). I tired to go back later to the store to find something else but they would not accommodate my medical disability so I was not allowed in the store. (I did wear a mask, just not up to the militant general's standards working there). Very sad, they stole from me and discriminated against me. Very rude staff, they did not try to work with me at all. Tough lesson learned. read more
