This is a beautiful and well stocked independent bookstore. The staff was really friendly and helpful when I arrived for an author event the other night. I saw Olivia Muenter speak about her new book Little One, and the seating and organization of the whole event was handled flawlessly. I thought it was very kind of the event to offer free tickets in addition to tickets that came with a copy of the book, as I had preordered from another store. I appreciated the consideration, and it made me want to stock up on other books from them. I didn't have any issues with parking at all- I got a spot in the large lot right out front. I was also able to choose from a variety of options for quick dinner stops before my event. All in all, a great addition to North Hills! read more

I was invited here for the conversation and book sighing for Nedra Glover Tawwab's book Drama Free. This was an enlightening experience, as Nedra is a licensed therapist. As an advocate of therapy and overall mental health the gems she shared were amazing. The most profound thing she said that resonated is, "we are in a Generation of being emotionally aware" this is so true and reflects the space I'm currently in. I enjoyed the topics of boundaries and changing the way we deal with inconsiderate people. I'm glad I attended this event. Overall, Quail book store is a lovely store with a huge selection of books. The seating for this event was extremely crowded. I think every type of book reader showed up. There was a diverse group of people who attended. I loved seeing this! My only suggestions is for future events like this when you ask for personal signing instructions (our names) at ticket purchase why not already have this information on the ticket we receive when we enter? We were at their original location many years ago but only stopped into the North Hills location recently. We weren't even looking for books but we love independent, locally owned stores and popped in. Surely enough, I found a cookbook I was looking for and decided to buy it. The clerk asked if we were part of their loyalty program and we told them we were not, since we don't live nearby. The atmosphere is very cozy, and it looks like the host author signings on occasion. Definitely recommended if you like bookstores. read more

I've been a loyal customer for years, since the old Ridgewood days. QRB is a shell of its former self. The fiction section is weak, the classics have been relegated to a small shelf, and military history seems to be decimated. I have never been able to understand why there aren't more LOA, Modern Library, NYRB, Everyman selections. read more

I managed to squeeze a few minutes of "free time" in while my son was attending an event near this bookstore. I asked another mom if she knew about any bookstores in the area and she recommended this one. I am an avid reader who is capable of spending literally hours browsing titles and not even realizing how much time has passed. I also value independent bookstores, so I was ecstatic to discover this one! I was like a kid in a candy store. This visit absolutely made my week! LOL. Quail Ridge has a wide variety of wonderful books. I was so intrigued by the Blind Date Book section where books are wrapped completely in brown paper with no indication of their title or author other than a quick description of the content. I wasn't brave enough to go with one of the "blind date books;" however, I ended up selecting two books about creative writing. You could tell the store's books have been carefully handpicked to offer the most variety and quality. There are also nice gifts available for purchase. For stationery lovers, there is a section containing beautiful cards and more. There are unique gifts for book lovers throughout the store too (if someone needs a gift idea for me, I adore the gold-toned, dangling book earrings near the register and the Ruth Bader Ginsburg tote bag near the poetry section. LOL) The store has whimsical touches of unique decor throughout which add to the already pleasurable shopping experience. To my surprise, even the ladies' restroom was thoughtfully decorated with walls full of autographed photographs of authors whom I assumed have at some point visited the store. There are nice little nooks decorated with eye-catching art where a book lover can sit and preview their selections. And I truly appreciated the "All Are Welcome Here" sign in various languages posted near one of the sitting areas. To add icing on the cake, the employees were very welcoming. Some wore masks but I could tell, even with their masks on, that they were smiling. I have now found a new favorite bookstore and will definitely be a frequent visitor! I also appreciate the preordering option and have had a great experience with events, my family attended an author signing event that was really fun and inspiring. They aren't going to be the cheapest option--this isn't a used bookstore or a giant online retailer--but their prices reflect fair market value for new books, and you're also supporting a local business that gives back to the community. For us, the experience, service, and care they put into everything make it absolutely worth it. Haven't been to the store in several years, but I did reach out to them about possibly showcasing a book written for charity. I didn't go into the store, being pressed for time. So I emailed them inquiring if this may be something they're interested in discussing. I wanted to start locally, as nowadays it's nearly impossible to be heard from larger, corporate run bookstores. Never got a response, which was disappointing. I understand that it was unlikely, as I'm not the author and am not known to them or the literary world. But I at least expected a reply. I was looking for a book to give for Christmas, so I called all the bookstores and went to the B&N at Crabtree mall too. I was told by everyone that it was out of stock and could be ordered but would not be here in time for Christmas....until I called Quail Ridge. They ordered it for me and I picked it up on the Friday before Christmas! I have never seen such a huge, nice store! Beautiful! Everything was organized to nicely and the signage was great. It was very easy to find the different sections of books. I picked up the book and they even gift wrapped it for me! Nice employees, beautiful store. I will remember this place for sure! read more

I used to love this place, as there are very few independent bookstores in Raleigh. Also, this store is very aesthetically pleasing. In the past couple of years, I have noticed a distinct change in the staff. They are no longer polite or helpful. Most of the time they are rude, snobby, and act very entitled. I was willing to overlook this as I love shopping in bookstores! But this past weekend, the clerk behind the counter made a mistake and snapped at me about it, as if it was my fault. I was so shocked I became flustered. If I ever go back, it won't be for a long, long time. read more

Nice selection. However wasn't very impressed with the bookkeepers. Not very approachable in my experience, however they enjoyed conversating with my brother, so maybe not everyone's experience. I honestly also am unsure if they have AC or are just conscientious, but it was not a reprieve from the heat. Very cute atmosphere though. However, the book I was interested in was half the price on Amazon for new, whereas the one in the store had clear wear on the spine and was more expensive. I get the novelty and love to buy local, but also don't like paying 70$ for a book that's 35 new. read more

As an author, I make a point to stop by a local bookshop or two whenever I travel. I chose Quail Ridge by the reviews, and I was not disappointed. When you walk in, the store takes your breath away with two floors of books and a hanging chandelier. In the children's section, they have a tree display so it feels like you are reading in a park. There are tons of cozy little nooks where you can sit down with a book, and in every section there are personalized staff recommendations. You can tell this is a store where the booksellers really love books and are happy to help you find your next favorite story. Quail Ridge Books is a local gem of Raleigh. I have been going to QRB for years, originally in their old location in West Raleigh many years ago, and now in the North Hills spot. They have a great collection of books, the staff is super friendly, and best of all is that they pull in amazing author events. I attended a midnight release party for a book here in Nov 2023 and it was so much fun. I've attended a few author events in the past and I will attend an author event here this week and I'm really looking forward to it! Came here for a book signing with New York Times Best-Selling author, Amber Smith, for her new book, "Something Like Gravity" (sold here). This is my first time in this new location and the store is absolutely breathtaking. It's a modern take on the bookstores of old. Complete with a lofted area where part of the collection is housed. The walls are a beautiful hue of red. Each of the shelves is perfectly organized and has the appearance of a perfectly curated collection--as if each book is hand-selected based on its continuity with the existing books in the store. It's truly amazing. The staff is very personable and kind. They are helpful and know where the merchandise is located and are able to deliver it to you promptly. They are also great conversationalists which adds to the store's "Shop Around the Corner" ambience. They frequently bring in touring authors to share their works which also adds to the charm of this place. Local book stores have practically been made obsolete by the low prices that big box retailers can offer. But what's more important than saving a dollar or two is contributing to a business that can stimulate the local economy, offer a safe space for learning and meeting, and a venue that uses those funds to give its patrons the opportunity to meet real authors in-person. I will continue to patronize this Triangle staple whenever I'm in the area. read more

One of the best independent bookstores in the country. If they don't have the book in stock, they are usually able to get it for you unless it is out of print. Their staff is TOP NOTCH and knowledgeable. Their reader's Book Club is a great value and even better if you are over 60, there is no charge for membership. Even during these tumultuous times with books being under attack, they showcase the books being BANNED all over the country to inform their patrons of the dangers of prohibiting people from reading books containing subjects requiring thoughtful discussion. Local doesn't get any better than this! Bring friends, family, and out-of-towners to this local book paradise! The latest location for this amazing bookstore has got to be the best one yet. It is in the part of North Hills that is right off Lassiter Mill, near Vivace. Parking can be a bit tricky since it's a busy shopping area, but you WILL find parking, just circle if need be, and of course it's free. The store is well laid out, full of fantastic books for all ages and all interests. Perfect for gift shopping. They still do free gift wrapping all year round, as well. Why has it taken me so long to head on in to Quail Ridge Books? The space is beautiful!! I'm so excited to bring my future child here to spend time in that Children's section, it's so pretty and makes getting a new book a destination. I'm ashamed to say I usually buy my books on Amazon since the price is cheaper. But, I am rethinking that after visiting this store, to spend a few dollars more and get the experience of the store and support a local business definitely seems worth it to me. I recently went in for Kati Gardner's book release event and it was really neat to hear an author talk about her book and field questions. Quail Ridge gets a pretty impressive lineup of authors and those events will also be on my radar for the future. Seriously come here, you'll be glad you did!! read more

A superior bookstore with a side of humor! I love their children's section. Comfy cozy, whimsical and well organized. Employees are super friendly and helpful. I was looking for a book on volcanoes for a 4 year old. They had a science section but the book I found was a bit too technical for her age. Employee helped me find 2 others which were perfect. Couldn't decide which one, so I got both. This little girl is obsessed with volcanoes and will be thrilled. Complimentary gift wrapping? Yes, please! While parking was a nightmare (we came around 2:00 on a Friday), Quail Ridge was worth the headache. My partner and I examined the shelves for well over an hour but could have easily spent the entire day. I really love the way this book store is setup, they have a wide selection & the staff are always kind and knowledgeable. From this bookstore I found a book club group I love! YYYYASSSS. This is the best bookstore, ever. It is so cute and quaint and well organized and I just love it. The kids section is out of this world with cool decor and great book displays. (Pictures to come) The whole store offers a wide variety with the upstairs balcony (which overlooks the store) for magazines and fun things. The staff was super helpful and welcoming upon first entering and while we didnt buy anything, they didnt make us feel bad for browsing and enjoying at our pace. Some businesses are being super responsible and safe during COVID-others, like Quail Ridge Books, are making up their own rules which go against scientific evidence like requiring mothers to put masks on their infants. I was refused entry to this store even though myself and my 2 year old would wear a mask but I wouldn't put a mask on my infant whom I carried and had a pacifier in his mouth. I went out of my way to safely shop local and will have to find another local bookstore to patron. read more

I can't believe there are only a few reviews for Quail Ridge Books. I think they should have four stars for surviving the onslaught of mediocre McDonalds style Barnes and Nobel and Borders. I used to be a fan of those other chain bookstores until I realized patronizing them often chokes the smaller independent bookstores right out of business. I used to go to B&N and B because of the diversity and choice. Eventually B&N started to feel like a cheap dollar bookstore and Borders well, just lost their way under their own weight. But I always came back to Quail Ridge. Quail Ridge excels at the locavore stuff. Local writers, staff favorites make this a favorite place for me. I also love their cards and postcards as they are unique from most shops. They also sport a small CD collection. I don't' tend to thumb thru the cd's often when i visit though, too classically oriented. I'm more of a world music person. I think they should carry a few indie DVDS too. I usually make a bee line for the magazines as I can peruse titles not found elsewhere. And further back towards the bathroom, you can pick up free material, local rags, flyers and such to keep you up to date on local indie current affairs, which is cool. Oh yeah, the books. A little light on G&L subject matter, which is kinda surprising for an indie bookstore, but not surprising for a southern indie bookstore. Great selection on southern life books, and southern authors although a bit heavy on the white southern author side. Great History section as well. The Children's section seems to rank a strong presence right beside the adults with a very large area in the back. I have a friend who always, always goes to QR to buy books for baby showers here as she aways finds unusual books for great gifts. My only downer, is that after frequent visits, over many years, the staff are very unfriendly, they are more stand-offish than a nun at a nudist beach. Hence 4 stars not 5. read more

Quail Ridge beats any big box book store, any day of the week! Their book signings led me here over 15 years ago, when I met Margaret Maron and Rita Mae Brown in one week. Since then, I've met Mary Higgins Clark, Adriana Trigiani, Mary Kay Andrews, the late Sue Grafton, and too many children's authors to count. Rock Star!!! The new North Hills location is farther than Wade Avenue was for me, and parking can be manic on the weekends, but it's well worth it. The store is clean and organized, and the children's section is beautiful. Their employees don't just work there; they're highly trained and know everything about the store. You can also order on-line. They have good book clubs and occasional sales (up to 20% off for Readers' Club members), too. Terrific store! Shop local! read more
