Best turkey sub sandwich in the world??? Hear me out (and stop off if you road trip up/down i-95 like I do). We all know the typical deli meat- those round blobs of crap shrink wrapped in plastic sitting under the display case. It's turkey. Right? Is it??? It's smooth and round and textureless... But we buy the stuff anyway. Mostly tastes the part I guess. THIS AINT THAT MY FRIEND! Me and my sister ordered a classic turkey (w everything) and a Bobbie (w cranberry and stuffing) for a little kayak trip out on the Susque. When we unwrapped our subs for lunch... WOAH WTF is in here?? REAL TURKEY MY FRIEND! Chopped and shredded pieces of actual factual turkey meat. Not that squishy bullshxt from the supermarket deli counter. CANNOT BEAT a sandwich like that. Or a hoagie or whatever ya call em up in Havre de Grace. Next time I am bringing home a flank steak too because this is really a butcher shop doing god's work on the hoagie front. read more

TLDR: Galvinell Meat in Havre de Grace lives up to the hype. Massive, beautifully built hoagies, friendly staff, and a butcher counter full of unique house made offerings. Easily in the conversation for best hoagies in Maryland. This butcher has been on my short list for a while thanks to its recent fame in the Hoagie Gurus Facebook group, where their Old World Italian has become something of a legend. After finally making the trip, I can confidently say it deserves every bit of that buzz. We stopped in on a Saturday around lunchtime and the place had a steady flow of customers. My wife and I ordered the Old World Italian hoagie along with a hot roast beef and gravy grinder that was running as a special. While we waited, the staff was incredibly nice and helpful, and we took some time to browse their butcher case. Everything looked fantastic, and we ended up leaving with several packs of house made sausages that were too interesting to pass up, including a chicken crab cake sausage and a brisket cheddar. After a short wait, our subs were ready and they were both absolute units. Since they have a few two tops for the lunch crowd, we did not even make it to the car before digging in. The Old World Italian was exactly what I hoped for. Piled high with Italian meats and cheeses, sharp provolone, roasted red peppers, and prosciutto, all served on a sturdy yet soft seeded roll. The meats were perfectly layered so every bite was balanced and flavorful. No dead spots, no overwhelming salt bombs, just a beautifully constructed hoagie. The hot roast beef grinder was equally impressive. Freshly shaved beef, rich gravy, and melted provolone came together in a way that felt indulgent without being heavy. Comfort food done right. Between the quality of the sandwiches, the welcoming staff, and the incredible butcher offerings, Galvinell Meat is a destination. It is absolutely worth the drive and firmly belongs in any serious Maryland hoagie conversation. read more

Just a heads up if you're using Waze, double check the address as I believe it took us to the actual butcher location rather than the shop. Otherwise, it's such an awesome spot! They have fresh meats including some frozen options for those not necessarily purchasing for the day of. We opted for the Italian sub and the hot roast beef and we did plan to eat this later but for the best chance tried it when we got it and both were delicious!! We also purchased some frozen options of various sausages and fresh sausages. I also highly recommend their crisp Apple ice tea! They do also offer some tables so if you choose to eat there you can! My hoagie quest brought me to Galvinell Meats and they did not disappoint. Took home 2 different hoagies, had half of each for dinner. These were very solid , well constructed sandwiches with quality ingredients & layers of flavor. The staff was super friendly and helpful. While waiting , I picked up a few lbs of their house made sausages, very unique choices. I was hoping to put their hoagies on my top ten list, they jumped into the top 5 category. Overrated and overhyped with a large helping of 'tude off the old broad at the counter. If I didn't know any better I would have sworn I was in the checkout line at Walmart. The product is ok but no way is it worth going out of your way for and supporting a place that doesn't appreciate you giving them your money rather than taking it over to the Food Lion. I was visiting from out of town last week and had a chance to visit Galvinell Meat after all of the rave reviews. To start, the staff was very friendly and attentive. There was one major issue that bothered me whilst waiting for my food. A young man working in the back did not follow proper sanitary measures. I witnessed him come from behind the counter, go to the bathroom, I assume to check it, go back behind the counter, and into the freezer, all while wearing the same black rubber disposable gloves. Also, he went outside to bring in a basket of some sort while wearing the same black rubber gloves. This caused me to pause. We eventually received our sub, but when we got home, we did not finish it. I ate a corner, and the rest was discarded. Please ensure that proper protocol regarding cleanliness when handling food is followed. read more

Best sub I have had since moving to Harford County 20 years ago. Sorry it took so long for us to find this place. Had a great experience for my first time stopping by here. I pre-ordered two sandwiches - a House Special Cheesesteak and a Sweet Italian sausage with onions and peppers. They were ready to go when I arrived. The shop let me add on some sausages and a Chuck roast in-store. Service was personable and accommodating. I was given a free rib sample which they'll be selling for Super Bowl Sunday. All in all, it's great to have an old-school butcher selling high quality, locally-sourced meats and some of the best cheesesteaks around this area. read more

Holy God. I bought a pound of ground lamb from Whimsical Farm, down near Middletown. I made a lamb ragout. I've eaten it two nights in a row. I'm going to have to force myself to make something else tomorrow night so that the other stuff in my fridge doesn't go bad. After eating this lamb, it is impossible that I will ever buy meat from a supermarket in my life. I want to go into my refrigerator right now and eat more of this ragout cold. It seems to me that Galvinell might be the best butcher in the world. Fatty enough to provide flavor and cooking base. Not nearly as fatty as gross supermarket lamb. I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do with pork sausage. I've got a pound of that and a pound of their bacon in my fridge. Maybe I can put myself into a coma by noon. Galvinell Meats is an excellent local butcher shop. If you are looking for beef, pork, lamb or goat, this place should be your destination. Dan and Jen have a great business where they truly cater to the customer. I have purchased pork bellies, fresh sausage and pork briskets with great success. One of my next purchases will be a 1/4 cow. It is awesome to know where your meat is being sourced. They offer classes on different topics such as BBQ, competitions and sausage making. I recently took their Sausage 101 class and was very impressed by the amount of knowledge and fresh sausage I went home with! They also sell Meadow Creek smokers and barbecue supplies. I can't say I purchase all of my meat from Galvinell, but each time I visit, they get more and more of my business and I have yet to be disappointed. read more

Searched up and down for fresh pork belly to make my own bacon. Finally someone suggested Galvinell. Called and sure enough, no problem! They were very accommodating. Drove up the next day and was very impressed with the service. Perfect pork bellies...check! Lots of selection of other fresh pork products....check! From the standpoint of someone who takes steer and pigs there, they are awesome! There facility is always very clean, the family is extremely helpful, accomodating and treat everyone like they're family. Their meat is wonderful, their prices are fair for their products as well as their services, and you'll never find a more honest group of people!
