We had my parents' 60th Anniversary Celebration at the Galley since it is one of their favorite places to eat. We had 27 people in our party with a menu of salad bar, all you can eat fish and chicken, fries or baked potato. They had a table set up for our cakes and other party desserts. Very kind of them to do so. We had one of the back rooms which gave us privacy for the party. Our two servers, Nikki and Shelley, were exceptional. They made certain that we had a great time while never letting us get close to running out of food. The salad bar was well stocked and the house French is a must have. The hot foods were piping hot and fresh. Needless to say, we left with full stomachs and great memories. Would definitely recommend whether you have two people or a large party. The Galley is an icon fish place in Decatur for good reason. The fish is very good and the tarter sauce is excellent! I'm not sure if anything else really matters lol. This facility is large and has some age. The building is generally in good condition and clean. The decor is not all that attractive as it is kind of dated. The wait team was very friendly and spot on with service and refills. We started our lunch with salad bar and a fish sandwich. This must be a pretty common order as is saw a lot of fish sandwiches being delivered. For the price it was a good option. The salad bar is unique in shape. The lettuce and side fixings are pretty basic. They were all fresh and the bar was clean. However these items weren't very impressive. I was surprised to see several homemade salads on the bar. These items were fresh and had a nice taste. They just were overly impressive. The fish was impressive! The fish is lightly breaded with a slight bit of seasoning. The white fish was very tender and moist. It just flaked apart. The bun was a run of the mill purchased bun...that really hit in the way of eating the fish. The fish was piled HIGH on the bun...perhaps two or more large pieces of fish. The tarter sauce was slightly sweet and had a nice pickle relish accent. This has been one of my favorite fish restaurants for years but the last couple of times I went, the breading on the fish changed and was so salty that I couldn't drink enough water to refresh myself. Even hours later. They need to go back to the way it was before. The service was still great and the fish was good but the breading is just bad. read more

It was our first time eating at the Galley this weekend for lunch. The atmosphere of this restaurant was very relaxing and the staff were beyond friendly. Welcoming us with smiling faces! All of the food came out fast and piping hot. The taste of all of the seafood that we got was nice and fresh. One of the standing out dishes that we got was the grilled shrimp, had really great flavor and nice size shrimp. We are looking forward to coming back to try more of the great food and service they offer. read more

We enjoy the fish crispy and good, salad bar is basic but ingredients are always fresh...they have a buffet on Mon & Tues. evenings that my boys love to go to hands down. Cheap eats. I had the grilled cheese - pretty basic and a side of broccoli. Husband had the chicken strips and he was very happy with the portion size for the chicken. This is a must stop if I am in the Decatur area! I have been coming to the Galley for years and it has always been a family favorite. Stop in on a Mondays or Tuesday evening for AYCE fries chicken and fish buffet. The Cod fish and their tartar sauce is fantastic so I don't explore the menu other than that typically. But I always make sure to get the salad bar. It is great with plenty of options and the tangy tomato dressing is my favorite. They have a large back room which is good for groups, the restaurant is kid friend and they also have a separate lounge area. Service could be improved, but the food never disappoints. Be careful as there is a limit to two refills on soft drinks. If you haven't had a chance to come to the Galley make a pit stop here! read more

Luckily we didn't drop a bunch of money at this place or otherwise it probably would have gotten a 1 star. Our favorite fish place is no longer accessible, so we were really hoping to find that the galley would meet the need and regular fish graving. Nope! I had a little taste of the fish before I put my order in and decided right away that the breading was way too mealy tasting and overly salty (I don't say that often). So I ordered a medium/rare Delmonico that came to the table very well done. Because I hate to waste food, I was hesitant about sending it back but the nice waitress talked me into it. The replacement that then came to the table was bloody rare with much more gristle and waste than the first! But, I ate it and the cold onion rings without much else to say. The Hubby did order the all you can eat and said that every batch tasted different. Mealy, salt and overly fishy. The fries where McDonald like/low quality and all stuck together in a clump after coming out of the fryer like that. It took a knife to cut them apart as they would not pull apart. I had patronized the Galley back in the early 90's when we were unable to get in to the Back 40 and evidently was unimpressed even then, because I had never considered going back. This place is cancer, i don't even know where to begin.. well for starters, all the fish tastes like its been stuck in a freezer for 3/weeks and defrosted and slapped on your plate, unseasoned of course, disgusting, pasty, and tasteless... it takes a certain type of cancer to pull this one off, and the galley with out a doubt has restaurant insanity.. this is a rare and the most deadly type of s*it stain in the restaurant world, where you have brain dead customers who don't know better and don't know of good sea food and also never leaves the f*cking town either.. the only good thing about the galley is the theme and atmosphere of the restaurant, but that is quickly ruined by the f*cking stupid customers who don't know of good food. I've been coming to this place since I was a kid for over 35 years. Previous iteration was a Gropp's Fish of Stroh - same decor and recipes I think but location is south of original from decades back. It's dependable. Maybe 3.5+ stars. I don't believe their famous fried fish is cod - a delicate white fish though. Our party of 3 got the fish sandwich & claw chowder, an AYCE fried fish meal, and the chicken wing platter w/ fries and cole slaw (sounds funny - chicken wings in a fish place - but it is delicious and a standout). You don't roll in here expecting cuisine and fine dining but after you've been around the menu - you glean the diamonds. All 3 orders were as expected, served promptly and at the correct temp (the wings were lava hot from the fryer!!). I'm a very good cook -but - I actually wish I could bread and fry fish just like this! Better than beer battered fish and chips in my book. It's my standard for this fare. I've eaten here several times and never been disappointed. The food is always served hot and the portions are good. I typically get the baked cod. Very flavorful and always cooked perfectly. I usually get it with the salad bar which is pretty standard and a baked potato. I've also had their fried fish which is really great. The breading is light and it's fried to perfection. My husband loves their fried chicken. It's is also fried to perfection and never oily. I've had a taste of it and it is delicious. The decor on the inside is a little cheesy and outdated but that's part of the charm. Service is pretty good. Definitely a place we'll be going now that we're in the area. read more

The 3 star reviews that they had from other Yelpers were accurate. This isn't a repeat for us. Service is fine, food wasn't any better than frozen. We got the cod (tasted frozen), trout (over cooked), salad bar (eh..) a grilled cheese (cheese came from a plastic wrapper), the chili was pretty good though. It wasn't so bad that we sent anything back. But it also wasn't good enough to bring home leftovers. If we do deserts we will stop by the grocery store instead of ordering it here. read more

I had the fries fish sampler with a baked potato. The meal comes with the salad bar. The salad bar is on the small side. I think may be a good thing so you don't fill up. I do wish the dressing would have been labeled so I knew which one was blue cheese. The fish platter came with a piece of fries fish, shrimp, scallops and oysters. I think the oysters were the best item on the plate. I wish I had just ordered oysters. The were cooked to perfection!! Went to the Galley on April 23 2021 my husband and I was ordering our food two different times our waitress stopped us from ordering to go to two different tables to take their orders both times she was gone about ten minutes it was the craziest thing so when she came back the third time we told her we were tired of waiting because she had all of our orders but one side she didn't let us order so we told her we wanted the manger she didn't give us a sorry or nothing she just laughed at ok and took off The manger came over in a mad face and wouldn't even let us explain and he look at both my husband and I screaming for the whole restaurant to hear and said I'll tell ya both what I'm sick of u because u two complain of at the time and him still screaming he said get the hell out of my Resturant and u two r never welcomed back I said that not far out of all the years I tried to explain to him we only complained one other time He said I don't give a damn So I am on a cane I was trying to get up my husband and I wasn't saying no more and he kept screaming and said get the hell out of my restaurant I finally looked at him and said u can stop yelling and u can stop going on and on I am getting up we r leaving so plz calm done he than didn't say no more I got to my car and had a severe panic attack and had to be treated My husband and I loved that restaurant and went there all the time I'm praying he handles other people better read more

I hate fish but I love the Galleys fish. It tastes like fish u would eat@ a local fish fry. Service is great, people are friendly and they have an all u can eat fish and fries 7 days a week. My wife got to the salad bar, nothing has changed there in 32 years. Its average but let's be blunt, as their sign says, Home of our famous fish. There are some baked items. Beer and wine along w/Pepsi products. There also is a bar. They also have steaks, King Crab Legs and Lobster Tail. We gave it a 3 star due to the less than par salad bar. I made the mistake of ordering "The Captain's Platter" while working in South Dakota. It was awful. All of it direct from the freezer, and all of it was chopped and formed. The So. Dakota place was a GP restaurant and The Galley is a "seafood restaurant" but still over 1000 miles from the nearest saltwater. The decor is Indiana Nautical including a salad bar built out of an old wooden row boat and their sign proclaims "Home of Our Famous Fish". Do I take another shot? Lock and load, hope for the best and expect the worst. The "famous fish" is Cod, and fried, and frozen but at least it is a piece of real Cod. Not some triangular machine shaped "product" and is not overly breaded by some crumb-O-matic 5000 machine. It is probably the best fish that a sailor is gonna get in Northern Indiana and the salad bar is probably the best west of Harrisburg PA and east of Saint Louis. They have Amber Bock on draft a suitable reason for my making a return trip. read more

The staff are most pleasant and I like the nautical décor. Although they have a wide variety of items on their menu, I can never resist ordering one of their fish meals. The salad bar has a BUNCH of items served from a faux boat. They have a spacious main dining room or you can retreat to the bar area. They also have a side room for private gatherings. This is place to go in town. Well that was what i was told. Seafood in farm country, yeah not what I was thinking. So the relates took me to the best seafood around! The star of menu is the all you can eat "cod" and it comes with salad bar, well its actually a boat. The salad bar is the same you find any where not bad, but not great either. The "cod" is thinnest piece of fish between fried breading. I opted for stuffed flounder, again lot of stuffing but little flounder. Side note stuffing had crab meat in it and was better flavored than overcooked flounder. The baked sole looked best and it was swimming in lemon juice and butter. It was cooked very well and flaked perfectly. The last menu item was fish sandwich and it had more fish than all the other entrees. The meals were $11-$14, and all little scimpy but you dont have a lot of options here for seafood. read more

Let's start out by saying the fish was good, not great but above average, the fish itself was thin like someone on here said but in relation to the batter, it was just right. The salad bar was very basic and you could tell a lot of the ingredients were cheap. The Waite staff was very nice and for how busy the place was did a pretty good job. The atmosphere wasn't very good and the place was dated and tacky and when I say tacky I mean literally. The tables had that real tacky feel they get when they need to be refinished. We decided to try out The Galley for lunch. Their special Thursday was Swiss Steak with potatoes and green beans with a dinner roll and cole slaw. The steak was bland, the green beans were very good as was the dinner roll. The fries were cold and hard. The steak was also rather tough. Unfortunately the lunch was rather disappointing and the next time we try them out we will try the shrimp. Price for the meal was extremely reasonable but unfortunately the quality was lacking. The need to add mushrooms to the gravy on the steak and provide more gravy on the steak. read more

I don't think praying could save this place. It was bar none the worst restaurant I have ever been to. The Clam Chowder tasted like it came from a can left over from the second World War. Metallic, poorly flavored and down right revolting. A complaint brought no manager and the waitress couldn't care less. The Shrimp Scampi was awful. Six pitiful shrimp floating in a thick, vaguely garlic flavored sauce. The green beans tasted like a can and had a vague pickled citrus flavor to them. The mozzarella sticks, how on earth do you get those wrong? Well The Galley sure knew how. The cheese was not melted, but retained the solid shape of a stick of mozzarella cheese!
