Gail's filled our sausage roll (and cappuccino) dreams during an early morning visit before catching the train out of town. For starters, this coffee shop bakery is so cute - picture floor to ceiling windows, a corner spot for great people watching and a stunning baked goods display. We ordered cappuccinos, along with a pistachio rose baked treat and sausage roll. The sausage roll was packed with great flavor and seasoned very well. There were so many other treats I wish we could have tried. Also, I appreciated how thorough and thoughtful they were in sharing ingredient lists for my oof allergy. Like any good coffee place, the employees in here aren't warm, but that's how you know the coffee and pastries are good. Coffee was consistent the entire time we came here and strong. The only thing I didn't like was the almond croissant. It used roughly chopped almonds instead of the traditional almond paste, but everything else was amazing and I highly recommend getting coffee and breakfast here. read more

Gail's is an ambrosial artisan bakery that specialises in a wonderful selection of additive and preservative-free breads and cakes. I can never resist popping into here on my way past and I've often persuaded people to drive here for me on a Sunday morning for the freshly baked muffins. They're large and moist, filled with juicy berries or big chocolate chips with a perfect combination of dense cake with a crumbly top. Baked freshly in the morning you can get them whilst they're still warm if you go early. Their breads are best eaten the day of purchase and there's something really special about taking home a paper wrapped loaf under your arm. The 'French White Sourdough' is a favourite of mine. I come here more often with their sweet pastries on my mind and Gail's is the only bakery that I've found to sell Caneles (small French custard pastries) and they're only £1! They also have a real flair for pastry and their 'Chocolate Raspberry Tart' has a rich, slightly bitter, smooth chocolate set in an irresistible pastry case, finished with a scattering of sharp fruits. I'm working in Hampstead at the moment and I had to start searching for new places for coffee and lunch. Gail's is a lovely stop for a coffee break if you are in the area! Just having a look at the bread display in their windows will make you want to come inside! The place is tiny and usually very busy. Just a couple of tables inside and some more outside, but they have take away, so ok with me. They do sweet and savoury food. I haven't had a proper lunch with them, but everything looks delicious and tasty, and reading comments on here, it seems like that, so I'll have to try it soon. But I have had some of their cakes and cookies and they are lovely! The main thing for me is coffee. Even though is a chain, the baristas are skilled and the coffee is actually very good. I always order Flat white, which is a perfect size! The staff is incredibly friendly and they remember you from one day to another. Always nice to be assisted with a smile! read more

This is one of my favourite places in Hampstead. Ignore the fact that it's a chain. It doesn't feel like that as soon as you walk in. The staff are incredibly friendly. The food baked/made/cooked at the premises on the day. And the food.... No words can express how good the food is. I have not tried anything I have not liked. From the bread, to the chocolate and almond croissant (one of my favourite I have found in London), to the salads, to the baked pastries. The have speciality cakes for Xmas, Valentines, Easter, Halloween and all other yearly events I've forgotten They have a loyalty card like most places. Sometimes they forget to ask you if you have one but most times they do. Downsides * The doors to enter are incredibly stiff. It's a workout to pull them open. * There is no toilet on the premises. It's main sell is takeaway, so I can understand why there is no toilets. * Most of the seating is outside (so in winter there isn't really anywhere to sit). * There is limited space to walk so beware of other customers blocking you in. read more

This is an amazing bakery. Don't be put off by the fact that it's a chain - it's a cut above the rest! The mince pies at Xmas are delicious. And I highly recommend the potato & Rosemary bread, which they will slice for you on the spot. The recent addition of a lovely pre-3pm brunch menu has really added to the appeal. The only drawback about Gails Hampstead is the size. When it's busy it's very cramped and it's not the most relaxing to sit with a coffee and a book, for example, because of your proximity to the queue. But if you hit a quiet time it's nice. read more

I'll start by saying what it isn't - this isn't an equivalent to Islington's Breakfast Club or other american-style breakfast/brunch hot spots, nor is it the english-full-plus/upscale-pub-breakfast joint. Gail's has a variety of hot breakfast options, sandwiches, great coffees, sweets, etc. (OMG carrot cake). It's not the place necessarily to pig out on french toast nor stuff oneself with beans, but it's a very nice, lighter middle ground between a bakery/coffee shop and brunch restaurant. Busy at times, be sure to find a seat before ordering as the large instructions request. Very nice outdoor seating for sunny days, and great people watching on weekends as the market crowd walks past. read more

Booooo, boooo to you Gail's and your greasy savouries. Now I held this place up high with all the Yelp love it gets, to be mind blowingly awesome. Maybe that's what you get when you go with super high expectations. I can here to buy some tit-bits to complete a picnic over the weekend and after a recommendation from my friend we went for the veggie tart, goats cheese pizza, a fresh bread roll, chocolate tart and chocolate fondants. As you can see, my greedy little piggy eyes got the best of me and we went a little nuts. Gathering the rest of our stuff and leaving the overcrowded and bustling cafe we headed to the heath to enjoy the treats. The café itself is okay, great outside seating for sunny days but the staff are a little pushy. So on to the treats, the bread is awesome... seriously fab and totally worth its fame and glory, the savoury treats are a well... greasy and actually I found them a bit bland. Don't get me wrong, I still managed to gobble them down, I'd just rather waste my daily fat intake on something a little more tasty. The cake however were lovely, a little on the rich side, but I think that was chocie rather than a mistake on the bakers part. Gail's is a great bakery right off of Hampstead High Street. I found myself a bit disappointed with the sandwiches, but this place is fantastic for fresh bread and cakes. We often stop by on Saturdays to grab a quick bite and a cuppa. For lunch, I find myself alternating between Gail's and Paul's (which is right across the street). Gail's, however, holds my personal award for the best brownie in town. Not to be missed!!! Tip: If you're making a trip to Hampstead to visit Gail's, wait until September. Each year they put on an excellent garden party which is great fun and extends all the way from Hampstead High Street to Heath Street. You'll find a huge assortment of baked goods, cakes, etc. from Gail's. There will also be several local merchants that will travel to Hampstead to bring great cheeses, sausages, wines, and live music! read more

SO cute. I literally stopped and stared at the pastries for a good minute when I first walked past. It has a charming little artisanal bakery/patisserie feel (which it is, but they also have a few other outlets but much bigger). Very good quality pastries/cakes. Hampstead is just such a pleasant place to be in, especially during the weekends when you can enjoy a decent meal, then pop into a cafe, and then maybe go for a relaxing walk on the heath. Gails is small with a distinct family atmosphere, filled with the smell freshly brewed coffee and freshly baked bread, with the most delicious selection of desserts piled on the counters. You can also enjoy pastries, sandwiches, hot soups and salads. I last popped in for a cup of their hot chocolate. It was creamy and chocolaty, but not sickly sweet at all. wow, i think i am giving out too many 5 stars in London. The cinnamon bun was amazing! GET THAT, or else you can never say you enjoyed the best cinnamon in the world. Its better than the cinnamon bun from cinabon yes i am comparing it to a chain store, but thats what i grew up with. Soft cinnamon buns with extra frosting, but the cinnamon bun at gails, was absolutely fabulous. Gosh, it looks like the uglies cinnamon bun in the world with a huge tail sticking out from the bottom, but its so good. Its like two different worlds combined into one bun, crispy on top, and soft gooey, cinnamoness on the bottom. How did the baker do this???? I dont know, i wish i had the recipe, so i can make this. Positives: * Fresh selections of sandwiches, Turkey and emmental Sandwich= yummy. * Great variation of both French and British pastries, i have only just recovered from my croissant pudding addiction. Which basically is your average croissant squashed together and then covered in a sugary caramel syrup which has been placed in a muffin mould ready to be consumed. * Staff is friendly and quick. Negatives: * Everyday cant be a Gail's day because it is quite expensive. * I have only ever visited the Hampstead branch which on every occasion has been very busy and there has never been any free tables unless you want to wait around for up to 15min. read more

Gail's is the best bakery, cake shop and cafe in Hampstead in my opinion. There's a real family based feel to the place and a great local neighbourhood atmosphere which has something to do with its location in the beautiful Hampstead. Gail's prides itself on making breads that are 100% chemical free. They have a great selection of tasty breads such as their potato and rosemary sourdough. They also have piles of gorgeous cakes and pastries which are just melt in the mouth loveliness. They also do savoury snacks like sandwiches and soups all fitting in with their organic ethos. The cafe is filled with the smells of freshly baked bread and coffee and i agree with Aline on the hot chocolate-it's perfect! The layout of all of their creative treats is really enticing and at the minute they have some beautiful mince pies that have a great straight-from-the-oven taste. I love it, i highly recommend popping in to Gail's whether it's just for a loaf of bread or to eat in i know you won't be disappointed. read more

Dreadful. Staff were appalling. I had to ask the waitress if she could clear our table of the last people's cups and dishes. The repsonse was a look of disdain and a grunt. She cleared the table but did not wipe up the crumbs and spilt tea - obviously not part of her job description. When we asked for the table to be wiped, she reluctantly wiped half of it with a dry napkin whilst handing the tray full of our tea and cake to my mother for her to balance! Don't think they have heard of customer service or understand what health and hygiene is in Gail's. To top it off, they don't have any toilets - fantastic after you have just drunk a pot of tea. When I asked where the toilets were the woman behind the counter looked at me as if I was mad and suggested I use the lovely public lavatory situated outside. read more

One of the best Latte I ever had in London, should be this place. I randomly chanced upon this place for my lunch as soon as I reached Hampstead station. I thoroughly enjoyed chickpea spinach vegan burger, I was late for lunch and it was the last piece on shelf. Despite, it being tad bit dry on the surface, it was moist inside. It was one of the delicious burgers I have had for a reasonable price. Loved it. The place was located at high traffic place, and lovely to either sit inside or outside the cafe. They had wide variety of the breads, being a vegetarian and a tourist in the city, I could not purchase any of them. Highly recommend stopping by for a full meal, breakfast, snack or coffee/tea. read more

When ever I visit Hampstead I need to visit the Gail's as well. It's conveniently located close to the tube stations so it's easy to enjoy your dose of good coffee before starting climbing towards the Hampstead Heat. This cafe is very tiny and I find the few seats outside usually better than squeezing inside. The best part are their delicious bakery products, that are just best in town. Yam! Fresh and sweet, also with good selection of stuffed breads. If you feel like having just tiny sweet bit instead of big piece of cake, they have considered this as well, and they have these cute miniature treats you can also have with a more affordable priced. read more

Simply the best. Whether you want a flakey croissant, pain au chocolat, cakey muffin, scone, or toast, Gail's has it all. Delicious breads and cookies as well, and the Chelsea Buns are absolutely heavenly. Biggest problems are lack of seating (I won't dock them any stars for this - just the truth of being popular and tasty), and having to somehow choose from the displays of pastry just one treat. Good quick lunch here thought we haven t cracked the code on what is the best thing to order. They have a lot of good looking pastries and bread sandwiches though hey also have salads but they were hiding from us. I am not sure where they are, in the fridge most likely ? We spotted some lentils salad next table from us and it looked very good. Anyway we went for a cheese and ham croissant. I don't why but I keep seeing some really decadent savory croissant in London and this one had to go through my mouth for a try. Not the best thing I have had but did the trick. I wish it would be served at more melty level than done but that is my vision. We also got the poppy seeds salmon bread with avocado. That was good! Though a little small. And a ham and cheese sandwich looking like a croque Monsieur with mustard. That was good too though you can easily guess why. Bread is loaded with butter. Overall this place does the trick but you have to learn how to swim through it. All what you see is really appealing especially as it is right in your face when coming in, but there are other options hiding in there where to go for. Simply the best bakers on the High Street which means there's nearly always a short queue. Top choice is the Sourdough loaves (both the white and the wholemeal incarnations) closely followed by Paysanne Baguettes. Yumm! Try the ready-made sandwiches or pastries - nothing disappoints. Grab an espresso and a pain au chocolat on the way to work or a few loaves of bread for a dinner party. Mouth watering although it is mouth-wateringly expensive....still, there's a reward scheme: collect the stamps and you earn a free loaf. read more

Great products but it's like the staff are taught to be rude! They NEVER say 'thank you' they just stare at you when giving the change. Also lots of the people here aren't British nationals and english isn't their first language so you may find yourself reporting things three times and even you you saran's understood. Also, I only just found out they have a loyalty card. I've been going there for a year and I've never been offered one. Bottom line is I resist going in there anymore even thought I like the stuff, because the staff make it too stressy. read more
