Minimalism can be expensive, very expensive. But still having Gail's nearby allows me to really enjoy weekend breakfast when I do not want to wait until my homemade bread is done. Just wake up, quick run up the street and in 15 minutes I am enjoying the sunshine with a delicious buttered bread in hand. Granted, London not always delivers on the sunshine but Gail's always delivers on bread. Underneath I will post updates of the breads I tried.

I'm working in Hampstead at the moment and I had to start searching for new places for coffee and lunch. Gail's is a lovely stop for a coffee break if you are in the area! Just having a look at the bread display in their windows will make you want to come inside! The place is tiny and usually very busy. Just a couple of tables inside and some more outside, but they have take away, so ok with me. They do sweet and savoury food. I haven't had a proper lunch with them, but everything looks delicious and tasty, and reading comments on here, it seems like that, so I'll have to try it soon. But I have had some of their cakes and cookies and they are lovely! The main thing for me is coffee. Even though is a chain, the baristas are skilled and the coffee is actually very good. I always order Flat white, which is a perfect size! The staff is incredibly friendly and they remember you from one day to another. Always nice to be assisted with a smile!

This is one of my favourite places in Hampstead. Ignore the fact that it's a chain. It doesn't feel like that as soon as you walk in. The staff are incredibly friendly. The food baked/made/cooked at the premises on the day. And the food.... No words can express how good the food is. I have not tried anything I have not liked. From the bread, to the chocolate and almond croissant (one of my favourite I have found in London), to the salads, to the baked pastries. The have speciality cakes for Xmas, Valentines, Easter, Halloween and all other yearly events I've forgotten They have a loyalty card like most places. Sometimes they forget to ask you if you have one but most times they do. Downsides * The doors to enter are incredibly stiff. It's a workout to pull them open. * There is no toilet on the premises. It's main sell is takeaway, so I can understand why there is no toilets. * Most of the seating is outside (so in winter there isn't really anywhere to sit). * There is limited space to walk so beware of other customers blocking you in.

This is an amazing bakery. Don't be put off by the fact that it's a chain - it's a cut above the rest! The mince pies at Xmas are delicious. And I highly recommend the potato & Rosemary bread, which they will slice for you on the spot. The recent addition of a lovely pre-3pm brunch menu has really added to the appeal. The only drawback about Gails Hampstead is the size. When it's busy it's very cramped and it's not the most relaxing to sit with a coffee and a book, for example, because of your proximity to the queue. But if you hit a quiet time it's nice.

One of the best bakeries/cafes I've been to. I dig the pastries and there is indoor seating. Worth waking up early for.

The layout of all of their creative treats is really enticing and at the minute they have some beautiful mince pies that have a great straight-from-the-oven taste.

Some of the staff can be a bit short, but on the whole they're friendly enough. They've got tables now to make it a little more cafe style but there are some things (mostly beef related) that they don't allow to be eaten in store. Most of their pastries look good and the ones that I've tried are tasty if a little stodgy. Not being close to a tube station, I don't visit that often but if given the chance, they're one of the better bakeries out there.

Nice thing about this place is that they have a large variety of pastries and bread, as well as several big coolers with prepared sandwiches, egg salad, cream cheese, etc., and they don't run out of bread in the late afternoon like some bakeries. Wish I could pay with a car for transactions under 10 pounds though. I don't get why that's such a problem everywhere. I mean, ffs, just charge me the extra 20p for the transactions costs or whatever, don't make me waste 15 minutes of my time walking to a nearby ATM.

My favorite is the macarons though. They have the huge kind, the size of a bloated cookie, and though it's not cheap at more than 2 pounds each, it's delicious and worth it. Everything in their window makes me drool, especially their Frasier cake. It took every ounce of self control to not buy an entire cake for myself. I later bought one of Paul's canvas bags at the Covent Garden location as a souvenir, durable and only a little less than 4 pounds!
