To put it plainly: Gabriela's serves delicious food, with healthy portions at very fair prices. The Al Pastor tacos are excellent, the Enchiladas Nortenas are great and the rest of the menu has been full of the staples we've all come to know and love. This place is great. Plenty of seating, solid service, everything you'd expect from a great restaurant, and it happens to be in Howe. Sometimes small town restaurants get a pass on lackluster food due to locale. While being tex-mex to serve the surrounding community better, they still manage to bring an authentic mexican touch to their food which is impossible to find elsewhere. When even a simple bean and cheese burrito is something you can taste the love in, you know you're in good hands. God, I love Howe, Texas. And I love Gabriela's. If I'm not cooking dinner, I'm either here, or next door at wonderful Hana's. Sometimes more than once a week. (They are both very reasonably priced, generously portioned, and also delicious, and that's something of a rarity these days.) Standouts for me are the chile relleno (I like the fajita chicken but fajita beef is tasty too), al pastor tacos, Jack's burrito, and the nachos. Are my choices here a little basic? MAYHAPS. Are they consistent and delicious every time? ABSOLUTELY. You'd be well served trying pretty much anything though, I think. Their lunch specials are also great. It can get busy, and they're running a skeleton crew a lot of the time, but by golly, they're just about the warmest, kindest folks around. If you're coming from out of town, (or honestly, in town, lol) call in advance to make sure they're open. Anyway, it's cozy in there if you get a booth. Went here on a whim for lunch since we live in town and had never been, now it's a norm for us. I always get the beef burritos with the queso, and it's always delicious. My only complaint is the lack of flavor from the chips and salsa they provide, the salsa is watery and doesn't have much else to offer. Otherwise the service is great and always quick. We're pretty lucky to have a good Mexican restaurant in town. Have eaten here several times. The menu is big. I haven't found a favorite dish yet, and it's been fun trying out different menu items. Small town food Mexican restaurant! I wasn't thinking I'd be impressed when I walked in here. It's kind of a basic room with tables, not really the best atmosphere. I was also a little worried when the waiter told me they didn't have cojita(spelling?) cheese. I ordered steak tacos, street style and I was very impressed by the flavor- like truly stunned. You can order one at a time or a platter with 3. I ordered a platter with 3 but I should have just gotten a bunch of single tacos because they were so good! To be upfront, this is not based on the food. Never got to try the food. We were there on a Saturday shortly after 11:00 AM. They were supposed to be open, the door was locked, there were employees in the restaurant, and they just watched us try to open the locked door, but never made any gestures or attempts to come open the door. They just watched us. Bizarre! We went next door to Abby's and Abby's was fantastic. Thanks to this place we discovered one of our new favorite restaurants - Abby's next door. Love this place but don't go at lunch time or try to call in an order. They never have enough staff and will put you on hold for thirty minutes forget that you called and when you call back you can't reach the restaurant for another two hours because the line is off the hook.
