I purposely had a sport massage as it "targets a specific area of the body that is more vulnerable to injury or stress". At the beginning I said my left quad needed attention ('ve been in pain for about 2 weeks now). Perhaps I wasn't clear. The massage I received was a full body massage which included my upper back/shoulders where I hold a lot of tense. It was beneficial but as I understand it, it was not what I signed up for. O. M. G. Fong's Massage Therapy is a gem of a find in Boston Chinatown. Over the years I have…read moregradually been doing some major damage to my back via working late hours and tolerating the stress at work. I've gotten many, many massages over the years to help relieve the dull and nagging pain I have in my neck and upper back. I have a Massage Envy subscription (which I just terminated today) plus I go to a number of Chinese and Thai massage places to supplement. When I found Fong's Massage Therapy I was looking for the highest rated Yelp! business in Boston Chinatown... And then it was history... I actually just showed up randomly on a Sunday to see if I could get a session in. First, I was expecting a store front on the main level of Washington Street but it's actually in an office building of sorts where you have to buzz in. There's no major signage for Fong's except for the buzzer label. The office is nice and very comfortable (nice cool temperature, soothing lighting and music and comfy BarcaLoungers for waiting. I didn't have an appointment but Kathy was available. I didn't realize it was cash only so I said I would come back after going to the ATM. However Kathy offered to perform the treatment and then I could go get cash but just leave my ID. I was like wow! And I wasn't sure what to do so I ended up doing what she suggested. The first session was amazing. Kathy basically checks out what's wrong and then administers the appropriate treatment. The method here is not like some of the many (excellent) massage therapists employ where there's almost a set sequencing of therapy. I was really tight so Kathy walked on me first to loosen me up. And then the remainder of the session was pretty intense--I usually fall asleep during no my massage therapy sessions but the pain was so intense and body work so deep that I couldn't fall asleep! The first session was so good that I set up an appointment for about 10 days later. During my second session I had gua-sha (spooning) done. This is where Kathy too lo a Chinese soup spoon and "scraped" it all over my back, neck and arms. Wow, I felt really good afterwards. Fong also checked me out as Kathy saw that I had a mountain of a knot on my back. Fong said there was a misalignment and that an adjustment would be helpful. I wasn't mentally ready to get adjusted then but I am today (third session). I am waiting for my treatment and I am hearing the "screams" of pain coming from the patient currently being treated. Over time, however, it felt like the management style, particularly at the ownership level, shifted. Communication became inconsistent, and situations that once would have been handled directly and professionally were not. This was not reflective of the front desk team. Many of the therapists I connected with moved on. My most recent experience simply was not the right fit. I did not feel fully heard, and the session felt more rushed than mindful. After the session, there was no follow up or check in at all, which has never happened in any of my previous experiences here. I was tired of bouncing around, so I gave it time to see if things might improve. In the end, she agreed it was not the right fit. What was most disappointing was how it was handled. It took several calls, emails, and texts from me to learn that my sessions had been canceled less than 24 hours before my next appointment. The front desk told me the owner was supposed to call me about the cancellations and to suggest an alternative therapist, but that call never happened, and there was no follow up afterward. There was also a brief moment that stood out. I had left more than 20 percent, though less than the week before because the experience felt different. When I shared that, it was suggested that the front desk might not have passed the full amount along. That surprised me, as the front desk team has always been consistently kind, professional, and trustworthy. I want to be clear that the front desk staff are excellent. They make scheduling seamless, communicate thoughtfully, and create a welcoming environment every time you walk in. I am writing this because I cared about this place. I used to genuinely look forward to coming here. Moving on feels like losing something familiar, almost like losing a friend. I would still welcome a one on one conversation with the owner, as I would have appreciated that before. I hope the practice finds its way back to what once made it so special.

(I had someone years ago and she moved away.). I am so thankful I finally found someone - Mara - who really looks/feels/understands how to see/feel what my body needs. Specifically, and at my request, Mara worked mostly on my calves (I have had chronic calf pain for years) and glutes (recent problems) and two days later, I truly feel like this is the first step toward true recovery. I cannot wait to go back to continue this work with her. (Also, it's really hard to find someone who can give a lot of pressure - and Mara can - in a slow, steady movement. It was truly amazing .)
