I appreciate a quality dive bar and Beer Bellies is no exception. I used to live in Hanover…read moreTownship but that was before I was of legal drinking age and could patronize such fine establishments. During a few recent sojourns to the San Souci I stopped by Beer Bellies and enjoyed myself immensely. Apart from a general air of unpretentiousness, rejecting the regality of more upscale martini or piano bars, any quality dive bar must also offer cheap drinks and good food: Beer Bellies met all these requirements. During both of my visits to Beer Bellies I was treated to the comedic stylings of James "The Wingman" Holeva. Billed as "the bad boy of comedy," Holeva's politically incorrect routine is reminiscent of Lenny Bruce or vintage Andrew Dice Clay. Beer Bellies earns high marks for their entertainment. After the comedian's set was over a DJ began playing dance hits and continued spinning until last call.

Crowd ranges from young to old. ...and then I always leave you with a tid bit about the bathrooms. Advise not to use them. The woman's bathroom was out of order or so I heard it was. Let me start this review by admitting that I avoided Beer Boys for my entire bar career, lasting 6…read moreyears. I must admit that I was wrong, particularly since the renovation of the bar. This is the only place in Wilkes-Barre with such a huge craft draft selection with over 30 on tap, and rotating. I was in heaven, lost in delirium. Oddly or not oddly if you know this city, Beer Boys doesn't attract the typical hipster bourgeois, often pretentious craft beer crowd. Rather, it remains mostly a locals bar with a college flair. It's filled with Coughlin graduates, King's students and North Enders. The prices are more than fair, and often criminally cheap for the quality of the beers. During the warm season, the patio is open and welcoming. Without a shadow of a doubt, the best place for craft drafts in Wilkes-Barre.

After exiting my apartment I would turn left to experience the classiest neighborhood the city of Scranton has to offer - but if I wanted a bit of fun, I would turn right. It goes without saying that the Normandie was located on the right, deep within the Pinebrook section. The Normandie's drinks are inexpensive, the jukebox is loud, and shuffleboard and pool tables are always open. The crowd at this bar has a reputation for being rowdy and a bit rough around the edges, but you can't be considered a true Scrantonian until you get into a bar fight at the Normandie. A popular local saying is "Stormin' the Norm" - back when I lived in Scranton, that's what you'd find me doing on all my free weekends.
