After my oil change they told me my car was due for the 30k service. They quoted me $600 for the service. At the time of pickup, they rung me up for $900?!?!? That's a huge difference! Thinking it was a fluke, I took my Subaru for the next 30k service. They quoted me $1,000 for the service. When the car was ready, they rung me up for $1,300!?!?!? How do they just throw arbitrary numbers for a service and then ring you up for a higher/different amount? I took my Toyota to a local auto shop for its 30k service and the amount they quoted me ($600) for the service was what I paid for when the service was completed - honest business. If no other issues came up during the service then you should be charged at the quoted amount. Also, you should have a standard price for the services. Will never take my car there again! read more

I took my 2020 Subaru STI in for brakes this morning! I had previously called Paul to schedule, get a price quote, and approximate amount of time it would take. I got there at 10am, Paul said he'd need the car for about an hour or so. I didn't end up having a ride so I walked across the street to get a pedicure, when I was done I grabbed a coffee and walked back. The car was already done and backed in the front and ready to go. After my experience today, though, I think we found "Frankie's" now fixin' spot because these guys aren't messing around just trying to make a buck. Took her in for some pretty severe belt squeal and they got us on the appointment book right away and got the car back to us same day. So I'm from the bay area, a headgasket job by itself is $2600 itself and $4500 if you want new timing parts, spark plugs, radiator, etc. $4500 for allwheeldrive in Seattle. I wanted the best shop and a place that specialized in it. The reviews below indicate that their customer service can be a little intimidating, not so. Paul is super nice and wow, he listened to all the concerns, etc that I had. I ended up paying less than $3300 for everything above. Definitely a good deal. They outsource the machining for the heads which is what most shops do unless they have their own, or if they just use a brush, which you should run away from if they do. They use all the best stuff, six star, Subaru, aisin, Mitsuboshi, etc. I had a shop in San Jose, tell me they use a gasket from a turbo and just fill the missing spots in with rtv, that's retarded, avoid the shops in San Jose. Six star is the only gasket that will work, well, at least the longest lasting one. Engine looked nice and clean afterwards! It is such an intense job with many steps that some things might be overlooked. Such as, the cover to override your gears to go into neutral, etc and a little rattle when the ac is on. Minor things that is easy to look and tighten up if they are missed. But nothing major. Overall, super happy and would only tell people to come here. They were the only shop competent enough to understand everything I'm saying. Oh, also, don't bring any parts, they won't use it for liability reasons which shouldn't matter because most of the parts they buy are cheaper than buying yourself from a wholesaler or ebay. read more

I HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND GOING HERE. I took my car here for a repair a about 2 years ago and it was the single most horrible car service I've ever had. I'm finally writing this review so that people know what's up with this place. They will take advantage of you and lie about what's wrong with your car and keep BS'ing you to get you to pay for repairs you didnt want without fixing the problem you were there for. [1st time going to the shop] I had my car towed to FW motorsports to have it diagnosed back in May, 2015. When I got there I talked to Paul who is the owner. I told him about the problem and he told me I had rod knock (which I suspected). He first told me $5,500 to fix the problem which was to rebuild my engine and I said I'd think about it. [2nd time going to the shop] I came back to sign the paper work and gave him the deposit. He gave me a written quote for around $6,600 which was more than the original price we discussed. He told me that would cover everything and any unforeseen expenses. He also told me that the repair doesnt come with a warranty (BIG mistake on my end, that alone says a lot about this shop) but If I ever hear or notice anything that doesnt sound right, I could bring it back to the shop and he'd take care of it. He told me it would take a month to finish. After a month past, July, I called the shop to get an update on my car. Paul said it would be done the following week and he'd call me. A week past and I never got a call from him. I called him the following day and he would say the same thing, "it would be done next week and I'll call you." This went on for almost another month. I felt like he didn't really care at all and just brushed me off. I was very patient but I didn't get my car back until almost 2 months. [3rd time going to the shop] when I went to pick up my car, the estimate totaled closer to $7,000. He added another $200-$400 cost to repair/replace something else without not telling me. I was fine with this at the time because I just wanted my car repaired the right way, I didn't mind paying a little extra. About 2 days after I got my car back, my car started idling rough. My tachometer would idle erratically. I called Paul and told him the problem. [4th time going to the shop] Paul took a look at it and he told me it was the alternator. He told me he'd fix it for $500, i said no and replaced it myself but it didn't fix the problem. 2 weeks after getting my car back, my engine started knocking again. [5th time going to the shop] I told Paul the rough idle and that it started knocking again. I dipped my car off, he called me later that day saying he tested it, this time he said the rough idle was due to a leak in the mass airflow sensor and this would fix it. I had the repair done, he charged me about $200 but it didn't fix the problem at all. [6th time going to the shop] I picked up my car after replacing the airflow sensor and my cold air intake. When I got to the shop, I asked him if he fixed the erratic/rough idling and he told me, "well, the car didn't die on me." And as for the knocking, he couldn't explain it. So he charged me for a repair that didn't fix the idling problem and I don't think he even diagnose the knocking problem. When I realized he's going to keep BSing me, I finally reported him to BAR and we reached an agreement to give me a partial refund and that he'd take the engine apart once again to see what's wrong with my car and why it's knocking. I got a partial refund but ended up not taking my car back to the shop because by this time I didn't trust him with my car at all and I didn't want to get my car back and have him say it's going to cost this much and have him mess it up even more. Paul has BAD customer service skills but at the time I didn't really care as long as my car was repaired and repaired right which I didn't get. When I reported him to BAR, they had me take it to a 3 other shops to get it diagnosed and all the shops said pretty much the same thing, they found that the knocking was coming from the 3rd cylinder and it's the shops fault for not catching the problem and fixing it because they had the engine apart, they should have known or looked at it more closes and it should be knocking right after it was just rebuilt. I have since found better shops around town that cost much less, that are trustworthy and do the job right. Please do not take your car here and save your money, time and headache. This shop needs to be thoroughly investigated on their practicess. read more

Paul and crew have worked on my car twice now: First: New clutch, throw-out bearing: fixed it in record time...two days..which was awesome since I need my car daily for commuting. Also, they replaced ALL the clutch parts while the unit was open, not just the throw-out bearing. In the same visit they also changed the timing belt(s) and water pump...again while the engine was apart...Gotta love efficiency.. That was 40K miles ago still going strong. Second: New brakes, rotors, oil change and fixed an interior light. This time Paul did some extra work that I didn't order: While doing the oil change he saw my torn up splash-pan under the engine and decided to installe a new one that he had "laying around the shop"...no charge!! After running a few tests and "calling the dealership to check warranty and parts cost" I was quoted $1300 for a new catalytic converter for my Subaru Legacy..............(when I left, I noticed they turned the check engine light off) so I called my local Subaru dealership to price compare and Subaru only charged $800 (per phone call). Long story short, when I took the car to Subaru I was informed that the catalytic converter was still under warranty but warranty is only valid when check engine light is on!! FW cleared my light so now I have to wait for the computer to re trip the check engine light on so the warranty will be valid. Worse part is FW preaches customer loyalty and honesty. REALLY?! Work wise, I had a 60k service done on my 2013 STi Limited Sedan, I have zero complaints, other than I had a mini heart attack when I started my car because the clock was wrong. But other than that, car was perfect, I took it home, did my own inspection, they did their job and they did it well. Their price was the lowest by ~$400 and their work was phenomenal. Paul (owner) is nothing but friendly, honest and straight forward. He'll tell you straight up when something doesn't look right or if something was installed incorrectly. If it's something that's quickly correctable, he will just go ahead and correct it. Always giving advice and tips on how to take care of your car. Db Tuned primarily specializes in Subaru's but also does work on Mitsubishi's and other Japanese cars. Db Tuned is one of the few places I'll take Christine in for service. TLDR: Paul, the owner and head mechanic, was honest with me even when it cost him $1,600. I first visited FW Motors in July 2017 to get a vehicle inspection for my 2005 Subaru Outback which had 209,000 miles on it. They said in addition to the check engine light being on (code PO 420), my car had various hoses, covers, valves, & gaskets that were leaking, and that the repairs would cost more than the car was worth. I decided not to have FW fix anything then since the car was still running, but I came back in January 2018 to have them deal with the check engine light since the car needed to be smogged. Over the next six months, Paul replaced an O2 sensor, a cracked air intake chamber box, and two catalytic converters (the first one was faulty). Oddly enough, the car passed the smog test after he replaced the catalytic converter the first time, but then the check engine light came back on. It always came back on between 40 to 160 miles after each additional repair with the same code as before, PO 420. This was puzzling to both Paul and myself. After conducting additional testing on my car, reading forums, contacting the Subaru dealer, and consulting other mechanics for advice, Paul concluded that he could not solve the problem and gave me a full refund for parts and labor ($1,600). read more

After he said to me "f*cking kids and their sti's" (I had saved my money since I was 16 and then enlisted in the military to afford my sti on bc coilovers with a hks exhaust...nothing to call me an idiot over) I went looking for a different tuner. Mike at gst was fantastic and Ed at eq tuning was very friendly and helpful. Stay away from this place. My car's (I drive a Subaru) steering was starting to fail on me so my brother (also drives a Subaru) recommended me to FW Motorsports. When I got there I was greeted by the cutest dog ever - Sparco! I explained to Paul my situation and he was able to put in a new power steering pump and change my oil for a reasonable price. I go to Sac State full time and had to miss class in order to get my car fixed and Paul was able to fix my car the same day! Too many good things to say so i will just talk about the two main times he saved my hide. 1.) drove up to Donner summit to deliver me a replacement oil cap (from one of his cars) and spare oil. 2.) waited around the shop for 4 hours on a Sunday afternoon while i limped my car back from Napa. I took my car here and ended up doing way more work then what I needed and charged me extra from the original quote and they never really fix or found out what's wrong with it. Thousands of dollars down the drain. The guy I talk to is a scum artist! I would rate this place negative 5 stars if I could. How this place has 4 stars is crazy. Something isn't right here. How are you as a mechanic, supposedly and expert at what you do, going to misdiagnose the problem 5 times, have the customer keep paying for the work that isn't fixing the problem and when you can't find what's wrong with the car, say you don't know and leave the customer hanging and worse of from where before. You need to find another profession. This is how they scam you. I should have listened to all the 1 star reviews but I was in a bit of a pinch and bad judgment got the better of me. If you have a Subaru, be it a 100% stock family mobile or a fire breathing, 500hp STi, you have one and only one legit option on where to take it to get worked on. And that option is Db Tuned. Sure there are other places that work on Subaru's in town, but no one will give you the straight up honest advice and quality work that Paul performs on the regular. He does all repairs, factory maintenance, and anything else in between that your car might need. My only gripe is that the location is waayyyy out in the sticks. I am a little late in this review because the service was actually done over a month ago however I needed to make sure this review was posted. This shop stays busy! I was pretty impressed with the fact that on two separate occasions (when I made the appointment and when it was done) I noticed the techs (different techs each time) and they were actually TORQUING the lug nuts... with an actual TORQUE WRENCH!! I got the feeling that Paul is a true Subaru nut who is very particular about the way things need to be done. Very informative and easy to talk to. I will certainly be back in the VERY near future. Paul is my go-to mechanic for any major work that needs to be done on my WRX. Why only major work? Because I live in Oakland and his shop is in Roseville. But that's how much I trust his work. He's worth the long drive out there. Even when I'm not at his shop, he's given me a lot of advice/information over the phone on minor stuff for my car. On my most recent visit for my timing belt & water pump replacement, he even let me borrow his car to run some errands while I waited for the service to be completed.
