Insane gem in Toledo. I do have to say "no, SERIOUSLY" when I talk about this spot to friends and…read moream generally met with (understandable!) skepticism that sushi in the Midwest could be so phenomenal. 6/5 stars. The omakase is a must experience for any foodie and especially for anyone who loves sushi & yakitori! Came here for the first time 4 years ago, and again a few weeks ago. What struck me is that the same head sushi chef was there then and now and that they haven't really changed the menu too much. Yes absolutely there were new and creative twists, but there are tried and true staples which have been mastered. That feels like their vibe overall - friendly, neighborly, confidence in what they have and will keep doing what they're doing, seemingly resisting any pressure to expand or get bigger. It's perfection! The omakase menu has three phases: chef's kitchen, yakitori, sushi (gorgeous nigiri courses finished with the most insane cut roll I've ever had). Everything is delicious. No misses. My favorite phase is the sushi. We STARTED that off with the most melty buttery otoro. I thought that was bold, surely it could only go downhill from there. I was proved wrong bite after bite!! Seriously, imagine a series of nigiri bites that hold their own after the BEST. Of the yakitori, the chicken meatballs were my fave, so juicy never change. Highest quality, well crafted, expertly executed menu. Lowkey I also love that this omakase ends with the most delicious cut roll, and not dessert. As a savory girl through and through, this is perfect. The onlyyyy downside is that all the rich food gives me a bit of a stomachache afterwards :D. 10000% worth it.

Wow... everything was delicious!…read more This place gets very busy. As in, they write your name on the door outside busy. Such a good idea. Thankfully, we arrived before the rush. The restaurant is small, with seating at the bar, around the sushi counter, and a handful of tables. The drinks were good, and the food was excellent quality at reasonable prices. Don't bother looking on their website for a menu like I did. The menu is handwritten daily and changes based on what's fresh and available. If you're not a fan of sushi, don't worry. They have a great selection of Yakitori for those looking for something different. My husband had the Beef Tongue, Pork Belly, and the Kurobuta (Berkshire pork) Sausage. He enjoyed all of them. The sausage was good, but it tasted like a fairly typical sausage and was on the smaller side. I had the Mango Kengo roll, which was very well done. The salmon was incredibly fresh. It was a little spicier than I prefer because of the Togarashi seasoning, which also seems to accompany many of the yakitori dishes. We also ordered the Ika Maruyaki (grilled squid). We both love squid, especially when it's prepared this way, but this dish just wasn't as good as we had hoped. We were both a little underwhelmed. The sushi and sashimi were beautifully sliced, incredibly fresh, and definitely high quality. I tried the Madai for the first time and really enjoyed it. The fluke was excellent, and the salmon was exactly what you'd expect from high quality salmon. I finally tried Uni as well. It was very fresh, but I learned it's just not for me. Overall, I'm very excited to go back and try more of the menu. I do wish the server was friendlier.

Decided on sushi for our Date Night and there is no place better than Tougen for us…read more We went later in the evening (around 8:30) as we were doing yard work and wanted to miss the crowd. It was good timing as there were only a couple tables filled. Took a while for us to arrive at a decision as Tougen has soooooo many great choices. We ordered Miso Soup as a starter - some of the best we've had. We also ordered some Specialty Rolls: All In; 381; and Crazy Dragon. All In - Shrimp tempura, tuna, salmon, spicy crab, mango, cream cheese, and avocado. Eel sauce, spicy mayo, crunch and fish roe. 381- Spicy tuna, cucumber, avocado, and crunch. Topped with a layer of tuna and avocado. Eel sauce, spicy mayo and crunch. Crazy Dragon - Spicy crab, cream cheese, and avocado. Topped with spicy tuna and jalapeño and seared. It took an inordinate amount of time for our food (30+ minutes), especially when there were only 2 other tables and 2 take out orders. Not like Tougen at all. The food was delicious as usual...

For the summer, definitely try out their sushi or Blvd Bowls, but their ramen on a nice cold day/night (esp. in the winter) is my absolute favorite. It's also a great ramen for when you're feeling sick.

I had seen this…read moreplace pop up in Yelp searches previously, but it's not in a part of the area we frequent much anymore. It's also not particularly highly visible from the road so it would not have stood out those handful of times when we did pass by. Located in one of the numerous strip plazas along this commercial stretch, it is relatively unobtrusive. It's tucked back on the hook of this J-shaped plaza facing the road. The plaza itself was nicely quiet in the evening when we visited as Marco's was the only other open shop. The restaurant was moderately busy, but there were nonetheless plenty of open tables allowing us to be seated right away. Once we were seated, our server Andrea attended to us quickly. She was efficient and pleasant, and she did a very good job for us while we were there. The menu offered several good choices ranging from sushi and sashimi to hot preparations. There were both Japanese and Korean favorites, and that plays to our liking. We have recently been ordering one appetizer and one entree to split when we eat out since that keeps both calories and the total expenditure from being excessive. Given the suffocating cost of everything these days, including eating out, we'll likely continue this practice. While this place is moderate in price by current standards, it was still helpful to be restrained. As such, we chose the CAA Roll and the Dolsot Bibimbap to share. This turned out to be plenty of food for the two of us and was likewise very tasty. The roll was not elaborate but was still excellent with a great combo of cucumber, asparagus and avocado. We always prefer Bibimbap in a stone bowl as they served it here. This turned out to be a great choice as the bowl was well prepared with savory ingredients and the Gochujang (red chili paste) was an excellent complement. The final bill with food, drink, tax and tip was $41. I should note that we could have made it cheaper, but I splurged a little bit with a $6 glass of California-origin Cabernet (though I noticed after the fact that they had Plum Wine...I'll try that next time). While we had to pay attention as noted above to moderate the price, I certainly won't complain about laying out just over $20 per person for a good meal like this these days. We'll certainly return when we have the chance.
