I've been to places where it seemed salesy or lacking authenticity. Teragi Academy is a place where they genuinely practice and instill jiu jitsu and its culture of honor and regard of others. The promotion of belts is carried out quarterly and only awarded based on merit. This is also something I greatly appreciate because I know many establishments that give out promotions for no reason at all. Since day one, the professors and coaches of this gym have been patient and meticulous in teaching techniques to the kids. Teragi has been instrumental in providing confidence as well as self awareness for my son. I've seen many of the other kids mature in their own ways for the past 2 years. It's always a wonder to see everyone come up together. For myself and my family, we seen so much growth and discipline in our boy. There's a comfort in knowing that our child is not left helpless and able to stand up himself as well as for others. I've been watching in the sidelines, two to three times a week, for the last 2 years. This is a program that provides a worthwhile experience. The benefit and journey is well worth the investment for anyone, young or old.

The staff for the summer program and after school program are fun and responsible and my kids always enjoy their time with them. Teragi is a little far for me so it's my home away from home and I try to do drop in classes whenever I have the chance. I always learn something new and helpful that I can take back to my home gym. The other guys in the class are always welcoming and friendly so I recommend anyone to drop in. It's also one of the nicest facilities I've seen with a large rolling area and a side area with tables and couches for kids to hangout and wait if I'm doing an adult class. Teragi is worth a visit!

Bottom Line Up Front: I give this gym 5 out of 5 stars --…read moreand that says a lot because I've been training in martial arts since 1995 and am a certified instructor in multiple systems. But let me break it down as to why it gets my seal of approval. What You'll Learn: Rounders offers multiple martial arts: Boxing, Muay Thai (kickboxing), Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kali (a Filipino knife-fighting system), and Mixed Martial Arts (which combines striking, wrestling, and Jiu-Jitsu). In the past they have also offered wrestling and Judo. So there's something for everyone. Regardless of what class you pick, you'll learn how to protect yourself while getting a great workout. What You'll Gain: Like I mentioned, you'll get a killer workout in a safe and fun environment. According to some studies, you could burn anywhere between 300 to 800 calories in a single 1-hour kickboxing class. It's far more efficient (and fun!) than running on a treadmill. And the added bonus is that you'll learn self-defense along the way. Who You'll Meet: From co-owner Joe Kim to all the other instructors, the coaches here are physically talented, knowledgeable, and easy-going despite being deadly warriors. They create a positive atmosphere so that everyone -- from brand new rookies to combat sports veterans -- has fun while learning. And that trickles down through to the students, who are all supportive and welcoming. The Space: The gym is medium-ish in size compared to other gyms in the area; enough to hold one large group or two smaller sessions at the same time. The equipment is top notch. And the workout space is well maintained. There's also a small section for weight training, too. The Cost: I've visited other gyms with outrageous prices (like $200 a month for only Jiu-Jitsu!). Fortunately, tuition here is reasonably priced -- with options to drop-in, go month-to-month, or commit to 6 months or a full year. (The latter two doesn't mean you have to pay upfront, just that you'll be charged automatically for your chosen time frame and save more over the long term.) And considering those options give you unlimited classes for all of the martial arts classes, Rounders is totally worth it. Conclusion: Rounders MMA Fullerton is an ideal gym to join, whether you're looking to lose weight, learn some self-defense, or just belong to a cool community who will encourage and grow with you.

Whether you aspire to become the next UFC champion, or be capable of defending yourself in a life…read morethreatening situation, grappling definitely needs to become part of your repertoire, in addition to striking. You must know how to defend yourself and be comfortable with fighting on the ground. I had started taking Pradal Serey for a while as my choice of striking technique, which I was very happy about (see my review for Long Beach Kickboxing Center), and decided to commit to a form of grappling. Previously I had taken Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for a while, but this was at a very small school which had some issues, so I left after a couple of months there. (I learned an awesome front collar choke there that I used happily many times at OCK on others, until I was told that this particular choke was not allowed in Judo, DOH!) Anyway, I was watching a UFC event and was introduced to a young in his prime Karo Parisyan, who displayed some awesome judo throws during his fight. I did some more research into judo and found that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is actually derived from Judo ground techniques, and that "Newaza" is an area of judo that is solely dedicated to ground fighting. Luckily for me, I found an awesome judo that was literally 2 minutes away from my house! OCK in da hizzzzzzy. The head instructor, Sensei Tony Okada, was a 1992 Olympic Judo competitor along with having many more impressive accomplishments. I sent a couple of emails asking some questions and relaying my concerns from my last experience at a grappling school, and the contact person answered all my questions and replied about my concerns. I went to the dojo to enroll, and sat with Tony's wife to discuss enrollment. I think the minimum enrollment was 6 months, (which is EFT'd from your account monthly) but I signed up for 12 months as the rates are better as the contract length gets higher. I believe the price went up since I was at OCK, but while I was there my monthly rate was 45 dollars, which is a ridiculous deal for three 90 minute sessions a week! I had my old gi from Jiu Jitsu so I threw it on and headed to my first class. Usually there is about 15-20 people per class. Session starts off with running around the perimeter of the dojo for a couple of minutes, and then countless warm up exercises and drills which range from mild to hot damn in difficulty. Then comes throwing form drills with a partner, sometimes some new techniques are taught, and then move into many rounds of randori (sparring) both stand up and on the ground. Sparring is done at full strength and is excellent for developing skills and confidence. Afterwards, sprint drills to put the final beatdown on your body. The only concern that I had at first was that people didnt want to spar with me cause I was bigger than them, but that wasn't the case at all. Everyone was more than happy to spar with me, and those who could always tried to offer good feedback and advice. Doing this even once or twice a week is a great way to stay in shape, but doing it all three nights put me into excellent shape. I improved a great amount during the time I spent training there, learned how to send people flying to the ground head first if needed as well as being completely comfortable fighting on the ground off my back as well as being on top. (Positions that I was not wholly unfamiliar with in other endeavors) Everyone who trains at OCK is respectful, friendly, and willing to help. There are many senseis who teach at OCK, and often there will be 2 or more in each class. Excellent way to get insanely good at judo and stay in top notch shape. If you are considering taking up grappling such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I would recommend that you look into Judo as well. OCK Judo is the real deal and will not dissapoint!

The head coach is an amazing instructor and an active competitor who always wins his division, it is very rare to find an actively competing coach who can teach well and give good details.
