Woolly Bear Books and Gifts

Woolly Bear Books and Gifts

(4 reviews)

Carnegie now has a bookstore, much to my delight and to my wallet's despair…read more Woolly Bear Books and Gifts is an independent bookstore; it opened its doors last Halloween, which means we've been lucky enough to have them in our community for almost a year. Their space is quite cozy, but charming and welcoming. The large front windows help illuminate the front half of the store and make it that much more inviting. If you browse here, you'll find a nice range of titles and genres, although their website says they have a focus on native gardening, environmental education, and children's nonfiction. To date, I have purchased a mixture of fiction and history books here. I also recently picked up some "blind book" / "date with a book" bundles, which were just too cute and enticing to pass up! There are also toys and other gifts stocked here, as hinted by the business name. They sell some Pittsburgh-based art, mugs, and candles; and I've purchased many stickers for myself and for friends alike. They also schedule events regularly - many author events as well as workshops and a book club, according to their social media. I myself recently attended a talk and beer tasting hosted by a local author; and I'm probably going to duck in during the next Crawl when they have "birds at the bookstore." (Real birds, by the way, that's not a metaphor for something!) Not only do I love the store itself, but the owner and staff are also great - very knowledgeable and nice to talk to. I'm so glad they're here in Carnegie, and I hope we continue to do our part to make them feel welcome!

They are big on cookbooks, travel, children's and gardening, just to name a few. The staff is very friendly and the store is well organized. The store is nicely located on Main. So much to see in the store and the prices are reasonable.

There is a charming little gift shop that recently opened in Crafton. Called "Blue Snail" gift shop…read moreafter a place in France that is known for snails and "blue" because the owner has sons this shop specializes in all US made and quality imported products. I got to interview the owner Jennifer who explained to me that pretty much everything is ordered from a wholesale company and she orders products that are well made. There's much to look at here. From baby gifts, children's and party gifts, pet gifts, scarves made in the UK, bracelets, necklaces in a bottle, cocktail gifts, soaps, bubble bath, candles, greeting cards, prints, soaps, you can practically find most anything you want here. With your purchase, gift wrapping is free. Jennifer is even offering homemade cookies as part of her opening week kickoff. She hopes to expand her business as she gets new ideas but it's a great spot to get something for any occasion or if you wish to indulge yourself. After much deciding I purchased an embroidered bat tea towel and a soap sponge holder to catch my soap bar drippings. The gift shop makes a welcome addition to the Crafton area and is located on E Crafton Ave near Sisters floral and Dancetime studios. Free time limited street parking is available.

In a word, meh. Not a bad place to visit if you want to shop for Christmas ornaments, but if I'm…read morebeing honest, everything here is the exact same stuff I can find at other stores. For example, the stuffed animals are basically the same ones at Walmart or Target; the chocolates are the same ones you can find at Giant Eagle; and so on. They do have a decent selection of greeting cards to browse, but I personally prefer to shop for stationery at stores like Kards Unlimited or Wildcard (which offer more unique and even quirky options). I guess it's nice to have this place as option if you can't drive to those other stores, though. It's a shame since I remember enjoying browsing here in years past. Now though, it feels like their stock is very "same old same old" compared to other places. I can't say anything is cheaper here than it is elsewhere, either. So I don't go out of my way to shop here anymore.

We just stopped in to check on the latest release of their Christmas decoration sets (Snowmen set…read moreof '18) and happened to find the complete set for $129 (including the light up trees) as well as an ornament to complete our Star Wars set. Well; we forgot to bring in our coupons or rewards certificates and thought to ask one of the four women behind the counter if they happened to have any coupons or if they could hold the items for us. One of the women (dirty blonde hair, didn't catch her name if she was wearing a name tag), was counting monies in one of the registers (we arrived at 8:15pm, and they don't close until 9 also) rudely said to my husband something along the lines of "She can help you over there." I then stepped over to ask him what the answer was when she then turned to me and snipped our "This register's closed, she can help you over there!" I replied "I'm with him." To which she replied again: "I know! This register is closed someone will help you over there." I didn't recall asking her if her register was open, or even for her to help me; I don't ever recall being treated so rudely when spending close to $200 on frivolous things that I can get online as well. The woman that stepped over to wait on us was relatively nicer than the first; and made small talk to try and smooth over the rude lady's attitude. But it was to no avail to us. We checked out, and promptly left the store feeling like we nothing but a pain in their rear ends for wanting to spend money. This wasn't the first time I left this store feeling this way either.
