I LOVE visiting City Grows. Disclaimer: I do not consider myself a plant expert by any means. And I primarily enjoy window shopping and taking in the greenery when I visit this shop. But while I don't trust my green thumb enough to be an adventurous botanist, I still try to shop here for the people in my life who actually garden. City Grows sells a nice range of seeds, potted plants, soils, pots, tools - basically all your urban garden essentials. They also offer some houseplants and even some skin care products. The houseplant related sections are the areas I tend to focus on when shopping for myself, as I actually do have a few houseplants...admittedly in varying states of health. In the past when visiting, the staff have been quick to offer to answer questions and have also been a delight to chat with. So if you're a first-time Plant Parent, have no fear: this is a great place to go to get supplies and information alike. Currently they're open by appointment only, according to their website. They're also offering curbside and delivery for orders. All smart because the shop itself is a bit cozy. I've definitely had to watch myself to make sure my bag didn't knock any of the foliage off of a shelf; navigating around other people right now is probably not the healthiest idea. All in all, this is one of the best shops I know of in Pittsburgh; and they're a great alternative to visiting the garden sections at major shopping outlets. I recommend them to any urban gardeners. No matter how experienced your green thumb is, you'll be welcomed here!

This place awesome. I went on this journey with a very serious plant poussè who didn't mind vetting this review. The pricing is definitely fair. The plants are incredibly healthy. They definitely did a lot of consulting with customers as they bought various plants. Small cons : - I wish the plant names were labeled as a first time serious plant buyer - It is just a little crammed inside the shop.

A delightful women-owned business with beautiful plants and gift ideas. In particular, there is a large collection of air plants for sale. Whenever I ask a question here, I get very detailed and helpful answers. The plants are always quite robust and healthy. I have never left the store empty-handed, they have a great selection and their prices are quite reasonable. This may be the most fun place to shop in Pittsburgh!

Beautiful building front - quaint and inviting

What a beautiful shop. We met an employee at a vendor market and then decided to stop by their home location today. The store front is calm, quaint and inviting. The inside is full of both common and unusual plants, bonsai trees, great gardening finds, and even swedish dish towel sets. The staff were friendly and informative. And the rear garden is a fun must see area. Be sure to make a stop at this totally usual, yet unusual spot.

Great assortment of plants and helpful staff. Also a lot of plant accessories. Repeat customers!

Extremely great to work with. Beyond recommended. I showed them the room the plant would be going into and they put together the perfect plant & pot. Shop local!

I LOVE THIS PLACE! Hands down my favorite place in Pittsburgh to get every indoor house plant need you might have. They have a wide variety of plants at reasonable prices - from succulents to palms to airplanes. The staff is super knowledgeable and passionate - I've had many conversations with the owner and employees gushing about indoor gardens! I've bought countless plants from here in the 8months I've been in Pittsburgh and I don't think i'd go anywhere else! For reference, I got both of my pothos plants, a snake plant, 2 calatheas, and a bunch of others from here and they're all still thriving!!

This place is an amazing and quaint little place that everyone should know about! Walking in I was immediately immersed with all types of plants from hanging plants to succulents to Venus fly traps. My girlfriend and I were looking for a place to get some houseplants at and drove all around to different nurseries but only to find that they didn't offer a wide selection of smaller indoor plants. Once I found this place I knew this was where I would be going to all my plant needs from now on. Specializing in indoor plants, they have every type of plant one would want in their house and a knowledgeable staff that is extremely willing to help and really care about the plants they are selling. They even showed me the correct way to pot a smaller plant with a short root-base (all terminology I learned from the staff lol). This place is dangerous because you will want to spend all your money taking home the amazing selection of plants they have to offer. Jon helped me out and told me everything I need to know about caring for my plant (watering/lighting/placement in house/plant sensitivity etc.) I will definetly be back to increase my (currently small) collection of houseplants!

    So many seeds!

I had passed by this place a few times and was always intrigued by what I saw from the window. I've never had a green thumb or anything like but I've recently started gaining interest in house plants and indoor crops. One of my current projects is attempting to grow spinach indoors. I found several types of spinach seeds each with different requirements. But I finally found one that could be grown indoors during all times of the year. Yes, they were a little more expensive than the seeds I bought from Home Depot, however I have high expectations for these seeds. Plus, I'm always happy to support local businesses over chains.

That was the first time I ever bought those and she was more than helpful, answered questions, and they even helped me load my car.

The store was out of stock of one of our selections, and immediately reached out to determine how we wanted to handle the situation, even offering a full-priced book despite our selection being a sale price (we opted for another sale book so as to not take advantage). The box arrived clunked up from the Post Office, but the internal packaging was done so well, the books arrived in perfect condition! They arrived quickly, too! In addition to our purchase, the box contained a sweet handwritten note and some adorable stickers. We will happily buy again from this site again!

It's like a gift shop you might find in The Museum of Cool Things-- treasures you will likely have never seen & certainly won't find anywhere else in Pittsburgh. For example, if you're looking for one-of-a-kind women's clothing-- a stylish dress, top or bottom for the woman who cherishes beauty & values quality, yet hopes to not see what she's wearing on every fourth person she sees-- Divertido now carries the Karakorum line of clothing-- designed in northern Italy and constructed in India. It will beautify every neighborhood she walks in.

It's the kind of place that immediately feels special -- warm lighting, thoughtfully curated items, and a vibe that's effortlessly charming. There are a ton of lovely gifts to get here for others or yourself. Many are imports from France or Italy. I wanted to get multiple candles, but left with one candle, one really nice shoulder bag (this is what drew me here in the first place, as I had seen it in the window and returned when they were open), and a lip balm ahead of the chilly winter weather that has arrived! I will say the prices here are a bit high, but everything here is of very high quality, and in comparison to the manufacturer or brand websites of the items I purchased, the prices were actually very close in comparison. It also always makes me feel good to support local businesses that are creating the flavor of the city we live in.
