Their collection of plants varies by the season but I'm always pleasantly surprised to see new plants in the store whenever I go in. The vibe of store is super relaxing and the smell of eucalyptus is strong and inviting when you walk in. This shop definitely gives off more high end vibes. There are more down to earth spots in the neighborhood where prices might be a bit lower for the same thing. City Grows is more curated and aesthetically pleasing and is a really nice experience from start to finish overall. The back patio is beautiful and it's fun to see all the outdoor plants thrive. I LOVE visiting City Grows. Disclaimer: I do not consider myself a plant expert by any means. And I primarily enjoy window shopping and taking in the greenery when I visit this shop. But while I don't trust my green thumb enough to be an adventurous botanist, I still try to shop here for the people in my life who actually garden. City Grows sells a nice range of seeds, potted plants, soils, pots, tools - basically all your urban garden essentials. They also offer some houseplants and even some skin care products. The houseplant related sections are the areas I tend to focus on when shopping for myself, as I actually do have a few houseplants...admittedly in varying states of health. In the past when visiting, the staff have been quick to offer to answer questions and have also been a delight to chat with. So if you're a first-time Plant Parent, have no fear: this is a great place to go to get supplies and information alike. Currently they're open by appointment only, according to their website. They're also offering curbside and delivery for orders. All smart because the shop itself is a bit cozy. I've definitely had to watch myself to make sure my bag didn't knock any of the foliage off of a shelf; navigating around other people right now is probably not the healthiest idea. All in all, this is one of the best shops I know of in Pittsburgh; and they're a great alternative to visiting the garden sections at major shopping outlets. I recommend them to any urban gardeners. What a beautiful shop! I always enjoy visiting this spot for a quick gift for a friend or treat for myself. During my last visit, I didn't have an appointment, but the staff was able to let me shop since they didn't have too many people in the store. This place is an amazing and quaint little place that everyone should know about! Walking in I was immediately immersed with all types of plants from hanging plants to succulents to Venus fly traps. My girlfriend and I were looking for a place to get some houseplants at and drove all around to different nurseries but only to find that they didn't offer a wide selection of smaller indoor plants. Once I found this place I knew this was where I would be going to all my plant needs from now on. Specializing in indoor plants, they have every type of plant one would want in their house and a knowledgeable staff that is extremely willing to help and really care about the plants they are selling. They even showed me the correct way to pot a smaller plant with a short root-base (all terminology I learned from the staff lol). I had passed by this place a few times and was always intrigued by what I saw from the window. I've never had a green thumb or anything like but I've recently started gaining interest in house plants and indoor crops. One of my current projects is attempting to grow spinach indoors. I found several types of spinach seeds each with different requirements. But I finally found one that could be grown indoors during all times of the year. This was my girlfriend's and my first stop on the Upper Lawrenceville section of the cookie tour. It is basically a plant shop but they also sell organic roll on colognes as well as various types of honey which we got to sample. The back of the store has all the equipment for those with a green thumb for planting as well as organic compost. We were amazed at looking at the lamps they had which had plants built into them. The holiday displays were beautiful and the poinsettias lovely. He explained to my girlfriend that buying a poinsettia if you have a cat is not a good idea. I was tempted to buy which was had multicolored leaves but realized our car was parked 12 blocks away and extremely cold outside! The owner was very friendly and thorough in his explanations. They even sold those airplants in a open glass ornament. This is a lovely shop and will definitely return when my journeys take me this way. Wonderful Lawrenceville shop! I came in with a few small pots that I've been meaning to fill with plants for a awhile now. The helpful staff member gave me lots of advice on which plants would best survive depending on where in my house I put them. Once I finally settled on a few plants, he gave me specific instructions on how to water them, and he even transplanted them into my pots for me! I was concerned this store would be on the expensive side, but I actually price-checked and the plants I bought were comparable to Home Depot prices. Their bigger plants seemed more expensive, but you also can't find giant money trees at Home Depot. I made an appointment (shopping by appointment only due to covid), drove 30 minutes out of my way, and walked two blocks in the cold rain only to find a note on the door that read "Closed early due to weather". I was looking to buy a string of dolphins, among other plants, and wanted to support a small business rather than order from a nursery on Etsy, but this was BEYOND rude. I received a text message reminder of my appointment one hour ahead of time - so you have my phone number and email address but couldn't bother to let me know that you were closing early? This is such a charming plant store. There's an array of plants, planters and gardening accessories. There are plenty of organic seeds, succulents and air plants as well as bushy jade plants and other larger plants. The owner/staff seems very knowledgeable. I picked up a big bag of rice hulls that I'll use as a light mulch for the seeds I'm staring indoors. The gentleman at the counter recommended rice hulls to help stave off fungus gnats. Love. Love. Love this shop. It's small but full of beauty. We were drawn to the hanging baskets outside. OMGosh! These were not the baskets you would find at a big box store. Actually I had never seen anything like them at the greenhouses that I have visited. After seeing what was outside we went inside. They have a little bit of everything-potting soil, pots, decorative planters, local honey, essential oil diffusers, and the list goes on. They have items for sale in their hallway and the back yard. Everything was so green and lush. My husband bought me a bouquet of mixed flowers that was gorgeous. As we drove home the smell of the flowers filled the Jeep. It was wonderful. I left behind a basket of flowers that I loved and I am kicking myself. I thought I was being silly until my husband texted me and said, "We should have gotten that basket." So, I guess we will be going for shopping trip number two tomorrow to get that basket. The wonderful thing about shopping small and shopping local is that they have items that the big box stores don't have. I don't want what everyone else has. A little pricier than I expected, but they have so many plants I can't find elsewhere, so it's still worth it. This is probably my new favorite plant store in the East End. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and one lady in particular answered all of my questions thoroughly and helped me find a few new plants to take home. She also trimmed the dead stems on my African violets, and told me how to keep it going since they're pretty high-maintenance. I didn't take a peek at their gardening supplies or anything else, but will be sure to do so next time. read more

So first of all, this is a really beautiful store staffed by incredibly friendly and kind people. I have been to City Grows at least four times, building my houseplant collection and turning my house into a verifiable forest. They are a bit expensive, but they have very interesting specimens, and I never have any issue spending a bit more to help a local business. However, there is a reason this is only a three star review. The main issue I have with this store is the lack of plant knowledge the staff displays. I have been sold a Prince of Orange as a Pothos (needs watering once a week) not a Philodendron (a bush, needs watering much more often), which is what it is, and a Rattlesnake Plant (which needs to be kept moist) as plant that I only needed to water once a week. I'm currently working hard to revive these plants after I nearly killed them, but it really angers me that I nearly lost these beautiful plants because the staff gave me incorrect information. If you don't know what the plant is, say so. That's what google is for. Don't make stuff up and waste your client's time and money. If I do go back, it'll be with my phone open and at the ready, prepared to double check everything. read more

I buy wreaths here a few times a year! The owner is always nice and so helpful! Just last weekend I got a rain water barrel and a compost bucket for my kitchen! That was the first time I ever bought those and she was more than helpful, answered questions, and they even helped me load my car. I am so glad this place in located so close to me!
