I have attended funerals put together by Fukui but I've never really had to be a part of planning one until recently. When my mother passed, I contacted Fukui not knowing what to do and really not knowing how to do it. From the first contact to the end of the funeral, counselor Yoshi and crew made it extremely easy and straightforward. They quite literally took care of almost everything from beginning to end. Yoshi took me step by step through the small amount of things I had to do myself and made it streamlined and easy for me. It was an emotional time for everyone but the service went great, without any worries or problems. It was that much easier knowing Yoshi was there making sure everything was perfect. I had been working 2 years trying to ship my parents' urns to a cemetery in HI. I was given erroneous information that the urns were too big for the niche. I finally gave up and decided to ask Fukui to help me find smaller urns and ship them to HI. I spoke to Eric Tanaka. To my surprise, he said the urns should fit, but called the cemetery to confirm. A couple weeks later, I brought the urns to Fukui. They were careful to package the urns and keep the cost down. Less than a week later, I was notified the urns arrived! My uncle had his service here. Let me tell you guys they were extremely accommodating to my family. Very helpful kind thoughtful staff. The older gentleman who I am sure is the owner or manager was on his way home saw me walking with my baby in stroller and walked back to tell me to take the entrance in the back and unlocked the door I didn't know there were steps in the front. I sat quietly in the back with my baby to not disturb and they brought me a chair. They were constantly communicating making sure we were all on the same page. Today we found ourselves driving into LA looking forward to seeing family but saddened that we would be attending an Uncle's funeral. Thank goodness for GPS, this place is stuffed in an old industrial part of town, yet just a few blocks off Broadway. It's an old Asian mortuary, just what the family is used too, amazed they are still in business. The family had made the arrangements, and the setup was nice, Uncle looked good, I think overall very happy with the service. The unfortunate part of this whole deal, was they had suffered several losses over the past few months, so they had "practice" at setting up the service, and it showed, the little details that they included, made it very special. read more

Just a quick note to express my thanks for Shoji Konishi's outstanding service in helping me go through the funeral process with regard to my mother. While I was still in the hospital and for a short while after I was discharged, I found the whole process a bit daunting especially as I was trying to shake off the effects of Covid-19. Though I was handling the distribution of her estate, and was knee-deep in performing those tasks, I, fortunately, found a knowledgeable ally in Shoji who was ready, able and willing to help me with the details of her funeral. I relied entirely on his expertise and found him quick to respond to my questions and guide me with regard to customs and practices. In particular, I found it so helpful in how he found options for me whenever a decision had to be made. Instead of me having to price costs or research vendors, etc., his experience gave me several legitimate options and the insights to make a good and informed decision. He always had a ready answer and a list of vendors for "Thank You" cards, flowers for the grave site service, obtaining death certificates, placing obituaries with the newspapers, contacting the reverend; and for all of those tasks and vendors, his constant willingness to help and to simply tell me that he would "take care of it" was always an enormous relief. I cannot say enough for the kindness and detailed work that he put into my mother's funeral. It is much appreciated and consistent with the sterling reputation that Fukui Mortuary has always had among my friends and the community. Hopefully Shoji never leaves Fukui as the latter will have a hard time replacing him because the void will be a big one. All the best and much thanks. read more

The parking lot gets very crowded and ppl leave the back (tandem) empty, to where others can't park.. so I just parallel parked in there since it wouldn't be blocking anyone. Eric Tanaka is really nice and helpful. I was asking about my Ba-Chan and Jii-Chan cuz I thought they were there... he did some digging and was able to provide info on the possible whereabouts. Fukui has been the Family mortuary service for two generations on my Father's side of the family and one generation on my Mother's side. I am writing this review today because of the excellent service that I have received from Yoshi. I was informed beforehand what information Yoshi would be needing to fill out the Death Certificate and was able to provide the information at our first phone-appointment. He has helped make the handling of my Father's passing much easier with his text messages updating me of my next steps going forward up to the burial. In my past dealing with Fukui and previous visits to family members in the viewing rooms, I have always experienced courteous staff and well explained and documented paperwork regarding the care of my deceased. First off, Fukui Mortuary was very helpful when my dad passed over 40 years ago (my first time using a mortuary for anyone in my family) and when my mom passed 25 years ago. No complaints. However, some 40 plus years later, quite a different experience. My only sister passed 3 weeks ago, somewhat unexpectedly, and it was decided to use Fukui to take care of my sister's final journey as my sister apparently did not have plans in place for a funeral service. It was bad enough that we had to wait over a week after my sister's death for the LA County Coroner to release my sister to Fukui, but after Fukui received my sister for cremation, someone at Fukui in their infinite wisdom typed my sister's social security incorrectly (admission by Fukui), that said my sister's social security number did not match my sister's social security number on the coroner's report. Needless to say, cremation had to wait until this issue was resolved. After about a week later, the social security issue was resolved with the help of my late sister's daughter, not without a couple of attempts by Fukui representatives to sell additional services to my niece. Reminds me of the dreaded ubiquitous insurance agents The next act of ineptitude was last week when my niece went to pick up her mother's ashes, which was expected to be in a brass urn. Well, guess what, my sister's ashes were in a plastic box! My niece thought the plastic box contained the brass urn, but much to her surprise, not so. Whoever my niece spoke to at Fukui apparently was less than sympathetic, but after 2 hours, the issue was resolved and we have my sister's ashes in the brass urn that was asked for and paid for. For all the generations that Fukui has been in business, one would expect better service. This recent experience has made me questioned if I would continue to do with business with Fukui. I understand that mistakes can happen, but two miscues within 2 weeks, especially during this time of the year, is something that I consider to be a egregious action bordering on a insult to our family. read more

We had a terrible experience here after I chose them to handle my mother's passing. I was not properly informed of all my options. When I told them that I did not want a funeral service, they told me it would be a witness cremation. I was informed that the witness cremation would be very plain, so I was prepared for a plain room devoid of any decoration. What Fukui failed to tell me was that not only would the room not be private, but rather it would be in a warehouse outside, with construction workers working nearby and with so much outside noise that the priest had to shout to be heard. I was shocked and traumatized as was my family and friends and believe Fukui simply wanted to make the most money they could by selling more expensive services, as a witness cremation is more expensive than a viewing at the funeral home would have been. I'm extremely disappointed with Fukui for not only failing to provide other options, but they also failed to timely follow up on other matters leading to additional stress during such a difficult time. Please seek another business to handle such an important and difficult matter. read more

Planning your dad's funeral is not easy. It's incredibly emotionally taxing and just a sad experience to go through. There's a ton of paperwork involved, photos to go through, grave sites to visit, people to contact, and decision upon decision to make all while crying more than you've ever cried before. So I cannot imagine what this experience would've been without the help of Fukui. Russell and Yoshi were genuine, kind-hearted professionals in every sense and along every step of the way. They were so patient with my Issei mother who was understandably under a lot of stress. It was extremely comforting for my mom to be able to speak with Yoshi in Japanese when she had questions that were difficult to articulate in English. The were very prompt in answering all of our questions and guided us throughout the process. I truly felt Russell and Yoshi had our best interests at heart and for that I'm so grateful. read more

This is a somber, but necessary review... My Mother wanted to have Fukui to take care of all the arrangements for my Father, I am so glad they did. I called them from St. Vincent's at approximately 9:20 am and was able to make an appointment with them at 10:00. A little after 10:00, Eric Tanaka came in and introduced himself. Quite impressed that they were able to meet us on such short notice. He went through all of our options and was very informative. We walked away with a laundry list of to do's and even offered to take have some of the paperwork faxed from the cemetery so we didn't have to make a trip there. We may be very sure of ourselves in our normal every day lives but, when it comes to making decisions for someone you loved with someone you love, you become indecisive. Eric was someone who guided and prodded us for information without being pushy. Eric was a godsend today. As flowers were delivered he continually rearranged them around my Father and after all were delivered the setting was just absolutely beautiful. The backlit photo was done well and he was there to assist at every step of the way. he was so patient even after we had changed our minds twice. At the cemetery he was very detailed in how he instructed the pall bearers to handle the casket and in closing, everything went very smoothly because of his attention to detail. Thank you Eric for taking of literally everything needed to make this difficult time in my life Much easier. Why would I write a review about a mortuary? To educate people and plant the seed to take care of this in advance. Make it easy for your surviving family members and choose a mortuary which best suits you. It's not easy dealing with an unexpected passing of your loved one but Fukui Mortuary did an amazing job! They handled everything for us (dealing with the coroner, death certification, crematory services, strict religious timelines, etc) at a reasonable price and made the process easy during this tough time. Not knowing what to do, my husband recommended me to contact them since his family had a pleasant experience with their services in the past. We worked with Mariko Gardner. She's amazing! Mariko was suppose to be going home early for personal reasons but stayed an hour over to help us answer a BAZILLION questions on short notice (other counselors were busy, we showed up at the mortuary 30 mins after we called since we wanted to talk to a real person). She also came in on her days off to help with arrangements and meet with the family to discuss the different complicated requirements we had (Cambodian burial rituals, Theravada Buddhism) so we didn't have to re-explain what we wanted to do with a different counselor. Fukui was very accommodating and professional, if we ever need funeral services in the future we would not hesitate to contact them again. read more

After an unpleasant experience with Mariko while preparing for my dad's funeral, I was loathe to use Fukui again. Herman Kodashi changed my mind about what happened previously. Herman was extremely knowledgeable and was able to answer any questions and he also has a lot of contacts in the Japanese American neighborhood, so he made everything run smoothly. I felt like he was a friend leading me through this difficult and emotional time. I had daily reminders and updates to help me stay abreast very step of the way. I cannot say enough about Herman. AVOID! Especially if you are of Japanese decent! I'm sure most people don't go looking through yelp searching for a mortuary when a family member dies. But I am hoping someone who "plans in advance" will see this review. Earlier in the year I went to a service for a dear friend's father-in-law....who I also had the pleasure of knowing. We were in a small chapel, with not enough seats for people so the staff were bringing in chairs and putting them in the aisle, back row, etc. Which is fine....however.....as much as a rush they were in to seat people, they were also in a rush to get people out. My friend compiled a very nice tribute DVD for her father-in-law. As soon as the DVD started to play....a Fukui staff member started telling the people in the extra chairs in the aisles to start going up towards the family members in the front to pay their respect. One woman stated "I want to see the DVD" and the Fukui staff said "this is what the family wants". Which I KNOW is bullshit because I know my friend spent a lot of time compiling this DVD and would want people to watch it (as did I). Some people reluctantly went up to pay their respects and then the staff member came towards the back rows where we were seated. He told all of us to get up and "go to the front". I reluctantly went up and I could tell my friend was confused as to why people were coming up to her when the DVD was still playing. After paying our respects, my husband and I went towards the back and were told by the same Fukui staff member to "please exit the chapel" WTF??? Later on my friend expressed how upset she was about what happened...she said a lot of people had complained to her that they were not able to watch the DVD. Luckily she was able to dropbox it to me so I could watch it. She was very, very unhappy with their overall attitude and customer service in planning and overseeing the entire funeral. She said the person they worked with was very unfriendly and very curt. My husband's mother belongs to a church who used to refer their members to Fukui, but they no longer do so because of the multiple complaints they have had from their parishioners. They are now referred to another mortuary. I believe this is the typical Japanese reverse-discrimination. So many Japanese will literally treat fellow Japanese like shit (here in the US, not in Japan) -because they know that the Japanese people will just accept it and not complain. Fukui has been in the mortuary business for generations and it's the first mortuary most Japanese think of when in need of funeral services. I have had this happen to me many, many times before-in restaurants (the non-Japanese get served first). Nepotism is not particularly favored within our culture when it comes to customer service, which is fine, but to blatantly give bad service and reverse discriminate? Not acceptable. read more

We recently had a sudden and completely unexpected need for mortuary services. We did a quick internet search and found Fukui Mortuary which seemed to be a good company. Their quick and knowledgeable response, compassionate approach and professionalism was very comforting and reassuring in difficult circumstances. There are many things that need to be dealt with that most of us are not aware of. You would expect a professional mortuary to know what to do but Fukui went beyond the basics with their caring and understanding. They gave us all the relevant information on what needed to be done, the options and suggestions, all with a no-pressure attitude. These folks know what they're doing and do it very, very well at a reasonable cost. We recommend them and give them a 5 star rating with no reservations. read more

I recently lost my dad unexpectedly and my family and I felt lost and devastated. We decided to ask Fukui Mortuary for their assistance and they did a phenomenal job. Our counselor, Yoshi, helped us through the whole process and made this painful experience of losing the backbone of our family manageable. I am still coping with my loss - gone two weeks today - but felt the need to commend Yoshi for his dedication, professionalism, positive demeanor, promptness, and his flexibility. He called the morning after my dad's passing to introduce himself, we met twice, and communicated daily via email for two weeks until my father's service which was held at the mortuary. He made sure everything was in place - obituary notices, programs, slideshow, realias, pictures, etc. He also made arrangements for us to have a Buddhist reverend for the service which we are completely grateful for. Yoshi was very accommodating and we will ask for his assistance once we are ready to intern my dad's cremated remains. The original reason for picking Fukui Mortuary was for their proximity to Little Tokyo and for their large parking lot, but now I can recommend them to others for their top-notch service - I received many compliments about the service from friends and family which is helping to mend my broken heart. I would like to extend my gratitude to Jerry, Ayumi and Hideaki for the outstanding service I received for my Dad who recently passed away due to Covid-19. I found myself a bit overwhelmed by the whole process as I had difficulty even finding a mortuary who would accept my case as many were at full capacity given the high number of deaths due to Covid-19, specifically in LA County. In the end I am so thankful that I went with Fukui Mortuary. I was guided throughout the entire process of my Dad's cremation with ease which was extremely helpful given the circumstances of dealing with his passing and especially during a pandemic. Jerry was always there to offer help and support whenever I needed it and was available to answer questions. I don't understand the one negative review here at all. My entire extended Japanese-American family has depended on Fukui Mortuary for generations. We have always received the best care and attention from each and every staff member. They handled both my parent's funerals with the utmost respect and professionalism. Their sensitivity to all religious traditions is so important for our community and sets them apart from other mortuaries. Additionally, they were able to help me to find cemetery plots. As I've grown older, I've come to appreciate this vital service even more and I am hopeful that this family business will be here to serve the community for 100 more years. read more
