Osaka Japanese Restaurant - Teriyaki Chicken

The teriyaki chicken dinner arrives looking less like a meal and more like a science experiment…read morethat's been left under a heat lamp too long. The chicken pieces wear a thick, uneven glaze that catches the light in a way no food should--slick, murky, and vaguely industrial, as if they'd been shellacked rather than cooked. Instead of a rich mahogany shine, the sauce settles into a dull, muddy brown, pooling around the edges like runoff after a storm. The rice beneath it doesn't help. It sits in a pale, compacted mound, the kind that suggests it was shaped by a scoop and forgotten immediately afterward. The vegetables--if that's what they are--have surrendered all color and definition, collapsing into soft, anonymous shapes that hint at broccoli and carrot the way clouds hint at animals. Then comes the deeper disappointment: this isn't even teriyaki in spirit. It's wok chicken wearing teriyaki sauce like a borrowed coat. Everything about it reads "stir-fry first, identity later." The meat has that overworked, steamy wok texture--soft, a little ragged, no sear, no caramelized edge--exactly the opposite of what teriyaki is supposed to be. Teriyaki wants a pan or a grill. It wants contact, heat, patience, and a sauce that reduces into a shine. This has none of that. It's just chicken tumbled in a wok and drowned after the fact. That's what makes it especially frustrating. When a place presents itself as Japanese-run, you expect at least a nod to the technique, even if it's adapted. Instead, this feels like the culinary equivalent of putting a "teriyaki" label on a squeeze bottle and calling it a day. The word is doing all the work. The cooking is doing very little. Before a fork ever touches the plate, the dish gives off the visual impression of something tired. Not comforting. Not rustic. Just weary. The kind of plate that quietly explains how you ended up with crappy wok chicken and teriyaki sauce instead of teriyaki chicken. Maybe that's the compromise demanded by geography--Lynchburg, Virginia, is not exactly a temple to Japanese grilling--but low expectations shouldn't require abandoning the soul of a dish. It looks wrong. It's built wrong. And it announces all of that before you ever take a bite.

You order at the front counter from an extensive, and in my view, pricey menu. The counter person was not particularly friendly, sort of like the counterman at a New York deli. "Whaddayawan?" and "Want anything else?". spoken as if what we ordered was nowhere near enough for two. Maybe she was just inexperienced in customer service,. because the no-nonsense Japanese lady manager/owner took the cash and put it in the cash register herself. I got the impression there was little comradeship or enjoyment among the employees. The whole "vibe" in the place was a bit depressing. No smiles anywhere. We ordered teriyaki chicken which was the least expensive dinner special. Came with soy flavored rice and some zucchini and onion stir-fry. The food was excellent, While the food was served on nice plates with an Asian design, the utensil was a simple tiny plastic picnic fork, It was not appropriate with the plate and the dinner. It was not strong enough to pierce the chicken or onion without nearly breaking. Gave me the impression the management was going to great lengths to pinch pennies. The eat-in beverage cups were Styrofoam. Might be ok with to-go orders, but not inside dining. Beverages were on a do-it-yourself basis, like at McDonald's. Parking is free and plentiful. I would like to return to try some other dishes, especially the sushi and noodles they're always a good test of a good Japanese place. I can manage the poor ambiance if the food is exceptional. My score is 4 for the food, 2 for ambiance 2 for prices and customer service PS: The lady who wiped down our rather sticky table, at our request left a little carafe on our table with no explanation- maybe water? but no glasses. Nope- i looked inside and turned some out- the "yum-yum" sauce unknown in the west but common in Virginia. There seemed to be a lot more take-out orders while we were there Bon appetit.

He asked for some sprite to maybe give it some carbonation to make it drinkable. The waitress brought it and it didn't help. He asked if she could possibly make him something else because it was just that horrible. She said she could but the manager wouldn't allow her to take the original drink off of the bill. I asked to speak with her since we have been coming to this restaurant on a semi regular basis for over a decade now. We have never had a complaint, but this was just gross and needed to be replaced. She walked over and was very rude. I don't even mind that she wouldn't take it off the bill, but the way she spoke to us was uncalled for. She acted like we were asking for her to comp our entire meal, which we paid 145.00 for. The drink by itself was less than 9.00. And again, not a big deal for us to pay for it, but the way she spoke to us was rude and we will not be going back. We have been regular customers paying well over 100.00 every time we eat there. I hope she learns how to speak to well paying customers and doesn't lose other because of her attitude.
