I love going to this place when I visit my dad. The place is located in a strip mall that you would never think to look, but I guarantee you it's a place worth finding. We always get it to go but it's just as good as eating it there. The food is has always been hot an cooked perfectly. I'll always get the filet mignon and the veggies hibachi style of course, and everyone else gets the teriyaki chicken and everything always comes with veggies. It's always very very good. The service is so great when you go to pick up your food they're always so nice and make sure you have everything you need and always give you extra sauce. The place is decorated nice with plenty of room and tables if you eat in. Very casual dining. The price is for when you are very unreasonable and they give you quite a bit of food. We've ordered takeout from here twice so far- it's delicious and always ready quickly. I usually get very thirsty after eating something with a lot of MSG and don't when we eat from here, and they claim to not use it. It tasted plenty delicious without it and I'm grateful for an option without it. Huge portions and heats up well for leftovers the next day. We will be ordering from here again! I have driven by this place many times and never stopped. Yamazato is located in a vacant shopping center, and only a couple of places are open there. So I had doubts about liking the place. At the suggestion of the Yelp posts, I decided to try it. I got hibachi steak and chicken. The steak and chicken were both very tender, and I loved the yum yum sauce. The portions were big and I could eat for 2 meals. For my personal taste, I prefer more seasoning ,but food was okay. Food was served on paper plate with plastic fork. Nothing fancy, but simple. The restaurant was pleasant and reasonably clean. The waitress and staff were nice. My bill was $17.92 with tea and refills. Price comparable to other places. I might return, but it's not my favorite Japanese restaurant. It's a decent restaurant for the area. read more

Let me start by saying that appearances are deceiving. It is in a literally crumbling strip mall where they are the only thriving business. It looks janky as heck. Walk in, and... An Italian mural... Ah yes, the rolling olive and grape farms off the palazzo in... Hokkaido. I jest. The food is tasty. Big portions that I can never finish with loads of filler, but tasty. Almost comfort food. It isn't fresh japanese-cook-in-front-of-you food, but, you can watch the cook. The kitchen is open to their simple setup. The prices are spot on and the staff is super nice. Added bonus, the ginger sauce is amazing and they will do their best to adhere to any reasonable dietary requests. read more

It's kind of a hole in a wall place but don't let that discourage you, run in fast and taste the tasty food. This is the best Italian Japanese food I've ever had. I'm joking--it's a nod to the wall art. This establishment was obviously an old Italian restaurant but trust me, it's a lot better than the creepy, virtually abandoned lot in ghost town. I only ordered the edame and the spring rolls but my friends go here a lot, it's clean, and the people seem decent. Perhaps I'll add more later when I've had the Yum Yum sauce. Food is good. I ordered filet and jumbo shrimp. When we finally received our food (after a very long wait) we were greeted with a table cleaner who failed to clean our dirty table. The food was very good but lost it's appeal after the long wait. I may go back but would rather not. The food was rather pricey as well. For an additional 15 bucks we could have eaten at a very nice steakhouse. Two adult meals cost us 37 bucks. read more

There is Japanese and there is Japanese. For what they do, Yamazato does it reasonably well, and that is to purvey, primarily for "take-out", the basics in grilled steak, chicken, scallops and shrimp, all accompanied by rice and essentially the same meat products, grilled in an identical manner, but served accompanied by noodles and labeled "yaki-soba". There are several side dishes but as for entrees, that is about it. Ambiance is nowhere to be found. There are some typical (for an Italian place) mural scenes of Tuscany's rolling farmland on the walls, along with a few seemingly out-of-place Japanese and Chinese pictures. The furniture is reminiscent of your mom's 50's style chrome-legged kitchen table. At a table in the back is a drink dispenser and a couple of sauces- The large pump-dispenser carried "yum-yum sauce" which seems to be a particularly Virginian corruption of Japanese food akin to Thousand Island dressing. The stuff is ghastly and is something I have never seen in a Japanese or Chinese place anywhere else. However the teriyaki and ginger sauces were excellent. Service was good, altho the server's command of English was not good. Nevertheless we made ourselves understood and she was eager to please. Prices were moderate, the combination "hibachi" dinner priced at $8.99 and the Yaki-soba at a mere $6.85 for the shrimp. I had a side "seaweed salad" which I had never encountered before but which was excellent for $3.99. The miso soup was also very good. We had hot tea served in tall white polystyrene cups. The entrees were also served in poly take-out containers, despite the face we were eating in. Utensils were plastic. I had my heart set on some sushi and sake, but when I suggested that to the server as we paid the bill she said very politely, "Ohhh nooo - you like sake?" as if it was some exotic concoction known only in the mysterious East. I guess she never gave it a thought to try to introduce it to the locals. After all, it doesn't come in a pop-top can. Anyway- they serve no alcohol. Given the local penchant for deep fried dishes, I figure tempura would do well, but the Japanese usually balk at making tempura with corn meal breading in the local style. But - if you want what they sell- you can't do much better in the area. Oh yes- there is a TV in the dining area for your "pleasure." read more

I have been eating yamazatoes for years. Never have I been let down. In Lynchburg yamazatoes is known for their delicious yum yum sauce. I usually get lobster, steak, and shrimp. Always satisfied. They know me as soon as they see me or if I call in, and already know what I want. I recently moved to christiansburg for a year and a half, so I hadn't had it the whole period of 2013. Why should I care? If you're considering spending your dining experience at Yamazato, give yourself a badge of courage. You're adventurous. You aren't put off by the appearance of this tiny eatery hidden in a ghostly, derelict shopping center. It's true that the Staunton Plaza has seen better days, with only fragments of a once active strip mall remaining. The parking lot is faded, cracked, and often empty, while the neighboring business spaces are hauntingly vacant and appear to have been so for decades. If you are brave enough to go beyond the broken exterior of the plaza, you will find a quite competent Japanese/American restaurant inside. Into the breach... Upon entering the door, you'll find yourself inside a grubby foyer with gritty green and white checkerboard tile floors. You might find yourself saying to yourself, "Was this a mistake? Oh no! They've spotted me! Oh well, no backing out of it now." Once you step through the next set of double doors, you'll find that the greeting is always courteous, despite the tired look on the face of the cashier. There's always a pleasant recognition to be found here, especially if you're a repeat customer. Wait...I have to pay before I eat? Ordering from the menu is a peculiar experience, as you order at the cash register before you are seated. That's the first clue that the owners are more focused on the take-out customers than those who desire a dine-in experience. You are then issued your Styrofoam cup and straw (second clue), with the option of a complimentary Fortune Cookie stored on the counter in the same box in which they were delivered. All the pretty pictures... By this point, you are undoubtedly stunned by the decor of the dining area(third clue), as there is an amateurish mural on the wall displaying a view of the rolling hills of Tuscany, all from a beautiful villa, no less. The way I see it, there will be two reactions to this motif: 1. Those who see it as a negative and find that it detracts from their experience. Or 2. Those who see the amusing character that it brings to the place. I find myself in the latter of the two categories. I immediately wondered about the history behind the design. What restaurant was here before? Obviously it was a pizzeria, right? Why didn't they choose to paint over it? Why am I so curious about such an ugly mural? On and on... I feel that the decor, while out of place, promotes discussion and is particularly memorable. If this restaurant was hidden away in one of the boroughs of New York City, the interior would likely be lauded as wonderfully ironic. However, in Hurt, Virginia it is a sign of thriftiness and stands as a reminder of the economic state of the surrounding area. So how's the food there? Beverages are self-served, via a soda fountain or tea urn on the back table and there is an array of sauces at your disposal. The menu is the typical fair that you've come to expect from a middle-of-the-road, Japanese-style restaurant. The food is all prepared in a similar fashion and is pleasant, albeit uninspired.. The meats are prepared the way they should be and the mixed vegetables and rice are always consistent. The tastes of the food are enjoyable, but curb your enthusiasm for extraordinary flavor to avoid being disappointed. The dining room is seldom full, so the wait time for your meal is nearly non-existent. Where's the dinnerware? The final clue comes when your food is brought to you on paper plates along with a plastic knife and fork. Styrofoam cup, paper plate, plastic cutlery... This solidifies in my mind that the owners never set out to provide a stellar dine-in experience. They know their bread and butter is takeout and they are not apologetic about that fact. There is earnestness to their approach that says, "We're in a strip mall! What did you expect?!" This indifferent attitude towards the dine-in crowd will have to be either overlooked by their customers or it will drive them to other eateries. Hey brother, where's the loo? The restrooms remind me a bit of all the time I spent in my early twenties in dive bars and punk rock clubs. They're probably cleaned daily, but they bear a rustic appearance that makes you hesitant to touch anything. If you're afraid of germs, you might want to hold it... Closing time Despite the lackluster dine-in experience, the restaurant staff appears genuinely gracious for your visit. They are sure to thank you before you depart and, in many cases, have given out parting gifts, such as calendars and pens. I've visited this restaurant several times and I've yet to have a bad experience with the staff or the food they've prepared. The food and service is consistent and the atmosphere will provide you with something to talk about outside of the normal, boring, getting to know you banter.
