Offering a limited selection of Baked Goods, whether they are made on-site uncertain, fans of School Bread will find Fulgen's lacking moisture in comparison to W.B. Samson while the Kanelboller also falls a bit short, though it is sweeter than most. What's better than a coffee shop that eventually turns into a bar at night? I really don't think anything, but Fuglen is just that place. Sadly I didn't stay for any of the bar action, but I did meet a friend here for coffee and really thought this place was rather charming. First cool fact is apparently the owners/management run a furniture business of sorts as well? You can buy the furniture you sit on and use! Even lamps were up for grabs. Gotta say, the chairs were comfy too. The bar/coffee shop is rather long and narrow with the bar being in the middle, well at least the coffee shop bar. I got to the counter and ordered a cafe mocha which was around five bucks USD which I didn't think was bad considering how expensive Norway is. I just really enjoyed the vibe here. Friendly patrons. Friendly staff. Nice, chill vibe. My friend and I chatted and caught up for hours it seemed. Had a great local feel to it. If I was a local, I would for sure come here. The coffee was good. I enjoyed the outdoor area of Fuglen quite a bit. There was tons of seating available and plenty of drink options. The interior had a very classic vibe to it which might bode well for some - for me it was nothing awe inspiring, but more than fine. It might have been better if it was warmed up in the oven, but I don't think they offer that. The mocha was just okay, more like chocolate milk than a mocha, and the interior was not that great. Once a week or so they arrange happenings like tastings, different food themes( Oysters, Hot Dogs etc) . Interesting cocktails with a nice vibe. I stopped by with two friends on a Friday evening around 10:30 PM, and it wasn't overly crowded (there were people, but we were still able to secure outdoor seating). We ordered many different drinks, my favorites of which were the refreshing Life's a Birch (birch leaf infused vodka, honey syrup), the tasty but not too sweet Rhubarb Syrup (rhubarb, rum, campari), and the Smack My Bees Up (aquavit, whiskey, ginger, wood sorrels!). We also tried some of their Norwegian sake, which they took the time to explain to us. I found it to be not as smooth or sweet as Japanese sake, but I thought it was worth trying. We sat inside on the nice couch area as well, and it's a comfortable seating area with music playing not too loudly. I'd definitely return here for drinks if I came back. read more

Shoot me now cafe lovers of Oslo, but I didn't like this place. I headed here with some friends after hearing it was super chic and cool and had a 60s/70s vibe to it. Cool, right? Not so much. My first problem was that this place was anything but cozy. Sure, it had some brown and orange couches that fit the styling of the place, but the rest of the cafe had old-fashioned diner looking bars without backs. These types of seats may appeal to people who plan to spend 10 minutes in the cafe sipping on a cappuccino, but for people looking to enjoy an hour or more...this is anything but ideal. Or comforting. And does anyone even work here? There were so many piles of dirty dishes all over the place that it looked like the cafe was manned by no one. When we finally found ourselves seats near a table, we had to personally clear out loads of coffee mugs and glasses just to have room to sit our teas and beers. This is not okay by me, especially in a place that is super tiny (as Fuglen was). The size of this place leaves something to be desired. I don't mind small cafes if they attract a small customer base. But this place doesn't. And the space in between one room to the next is so small that the poor people sitting on the diner barstools got a nice feel-up of my butt each and every time I managed to squeeze by. As for food and drinks...it was just fine. The scones and apple and cinnamon muffins look to be courtesy of the one and only Åpent Bakeri. Obviously this was a good thing. I ordered an Aass Fatøl bottle which costs 49kr (blahhh....). But it was good. On my way out I noticed they had Earl Grey Beer...whatever that is. Kind of wish I had tried that instead. Anyways, this crowd was unique. The people there fit the bill of what the cafe looked like it was trying to achieve. Strange hipsters. Which is cool. But all in all, it looked like a bad episode of the Wonder Years. I don't think I'll manage to make it back here, unfortunately. I have seen more appealing decor in Polish milk bars and have met friendlier people at funerals. But props to the worker wearing the Chicago Cubs vintage t-shirt. I thought that was pretty cool. Don't get too excited. Came for a cappuccino and wasn't impressed with the quality of the drink. However, I bought some beans to bring home with me and I'm really enjoying the crescendo espresso blend right now. The layout is weird (3 separate rooms) which distracts from the old-fashioned furniture they have setup. Not that impressive IMO. They start serving drinks at 20.00 and their cocktail list is creative, but the atmosphere doesn't lend itself to a good drinking place for NOK 120 per drink. Maybe I wasn't quite getting the whole Fuglen-thing but I guess I don't quite understand what all the hype is about. Fuglen is an okay coffee place. The interior is really cute and cozy, plenty of room to work on a laptop or sit on a couch with friends and chat. I would've liked to come back for cocktails but didn't have enough time during my trip to Oslo. The drinks themselves were just okay, nothing exceptional. We made a late stop here on the way back to our apartment and were thoroughly impressed with the atmosphere, seating and general ambience of the place. I asked if they had dessert (which they did not) but the bartender offered a "dessert-like" drink which he convinced me to try. The mixologist was visiting from Tokyo Japan and I must say the drink he had concocted which included soy milk was excellent. Not at all heavy, but with a unique light flavor. I stopped in briefly for an ekte chai [real chai], and watched as my barista made a work of art. I don't mean it was beautiful to look at, but the taste was simply the best chai I have had anywhere. I would call myself a chai veteran. I make my own, experiment with spice blends or different kinds of milk, and always try both a regular chai tea and a chai latter wherever I travel. Most places add something to sweeten the deal, be it honey, sugar, or syrup. I don't mind mild sweetness, but some places take it to the dessert drink extreme, and it just leaves me feeling sick. Ekte chai at Fuglen lacks this artificial sweetness, but from the first sip, my tastebuds were awakened to the natural sweetness from the freshly ground spices. I would compare this to eating a carrot - if you avoid desensitizing your tastebuds with sugary things, a carrot [and some other root vegetables] will taste sweet. Definitely the same concept at work here. A perfect balance of cardamom, cinnamon, and I definitely tasted a little clove. The location itself is very cozy, some might call it cramped but just find a corner, sink into your little nook and savor whatever delicious concoction takes your fancy. You will never want to leave. I cannot speak to the cocktail bar element as I have only visited during the day, but if the standards are anything like day life at Fuglen, you're in for a made-with-love treat. read more
