Espresso House is kinda like the Starbucks of some of the Scandinavian countries but in my opinion it definitely did not have the Starbucks corporate feel and the quality of their coffee and food was substantially better . This Espresso House was located right next to the port in Oslo in the Aker Brygge shopping mall. I ordered a double cappuccino and a Presto chicken sandwich. My cappuccino was superb and I really felt like the sandwich was of a superior quality knowing what a place like Starbucks would have served. There was a good vibe, it was busy but the service was excellent and not a long wait. They pre-make all their sandwiches. The problem with this is that if you want any variation of what they've already made, you're out of luck. All of their sandwiches had cream cheese in them (which I don't eat) so I opted to buy one and bring it home so I could scrape off the cream cheese. When I asked if they had any bagels or English muffins without anything on them, I heard a stern "no!". Also, they can heat sandwiches but not toast their bagels. It was a disappointing experience. This coffee house is beautiful! It is a two story space with seating all around, inside and outside. It's centrally located by the town hall and has a plethora of coffee and food choices. I ordered the lox bagel and an iced coffee and both were presented very quickly. The coffee was strong, but not bitter and there were multiple choices to add: milk, cinnamon, white, and brown sugar. This location is right around the corner of the Hotel Continental. It's one of the bigger ones I've come across in my travels through Copenhagen and Stockholm, and it was interesting to note slight changes in menu options between countries (loved the Tiramisu latte in Copenhagen, which I didn't find in Stockholm or at this location). I ordered a cinnamon bun, a triple chocolate cookie, and a chocolate Frappuccino, and my friend ordered a slice of blueberry pie, and also a latte. It was all good, though my bun was a little dry. The cookie more than made up for it though - probably one of the very best cookies I've ever had! This is a really busy location, so seating availability can be a challenge. read more

So who's the more beautiful? There's only one answer to that! This place is a spectacular architectural delight of a coffee house, an uber cool walnut layered Scandinavian barn conversion of a place. And staying on walnuts. The cranberry and walnut scones are worth an effort. Not that it'll be too much of a burden to chomp them down with your subtly caffeinated hot drink. I couldn't believe how friendly the staff were, there was so much disbelief in me that I had to do a double take the next day. Not only that, but I decided on a magnificent walnut and brie Panini. "More walnuts"! She gasped (not the good looking, ever blonde waitress. The exclamation came from my not so blonde, but twice, nae thrice as beautiful wife). I may even do a triple take tomorrow. I came in with my friend after seeing the Castle up the street. We got tea and the flat white, and it was AMAZING inside. I can't even describe the incredible presentation they have going on. Sandwiches, bagels, treats, desserts, all types of stuff! Comfy chairs, unique ladders, rugs galore! The gal who rang us up wasn't super friendly, but I'll pass that aside. This is a great cafe chain, especially because it was open on Sunday! It has coffee, snacks, baked goods, comfy couches and WiFi. It isn't the place for a culinary adventure but a place to rest your tired feet and refuel after an exciting day in Oslo. I absolutely loved this place! My boyfriend and I came here after dinner on our first night in Norway and we fell in love with the ambiance. It's a huge floor plan, with seats upstairs for smaller parties and seating for both large and small parties downstairs. The decor is great - antlers, Christmas lights, perfect lighting (not too dim and not too bright), and comfortable sofas/chairs. The service was great, and the coffee was good. I love all the Oslo Espresso Houses! Besides having the best coffee in the city (a lot of other Norwegian coffee tends to be too weak or bland), the spaces are comfortably cozy, and with lots of chairs and tables that invite you to stay a while and work or read or talk. They also have good free wi-fi. My only complaint, and reason for four stars: They all tend to play annoying generic Euro-American pop music much too loudly. It'd be OK if they'd just turn it down a bit, but it's too loud to ignore and not to my taste. Even my kids comment on how bad most of it is. Maybe some nice jazz or classical would be good for a change as well every once in a while? But otherwise these are the best coffee shops in Scandinavia, and the one on Olav V's Gate is a favorite--just bring your noise cancelling headphones! read more
