"You want nutrition, eat carrots."…read more The snark of this phrase was enough to get me to stop in. I love a spot that is unabashedly itself and sure of their product. The kind of spot where one can indulge, and know that indulgence is expected. The quality is fantastic! Creamy, velvety, and sweet, as a good ice cream should be. They try to make a superior product that focuses on being tasty rather than meet certain nutrition guidelines, and they succeed without a doubt. The variety of flavors is very impressive, There is something here for everyone, whether you love a good vanilla, or something a little more adventurous like "This $&@! Just Got Serious." With the wide variety of flavors and a sometimes long line, a word to the wise: look up the flavors and descriptions online before stopping in. Ice creams run the length of the line of people, and trying to decide before seeing everything can put on some pressure. Finally, the service here is very friendly and welcoming. The level of warmth that is increasingly rare nowadays, outside of places where one is in so often they're on a first name basis with the entire staff. Final verdict: You and I both know you probably want to get some ice cream. Stop reading, and start making your way to the Chocolate Shoppe, you won't regret it.

We've been fascinated that Chocolate Shoppe sends their special ice cream to independent ice cream shops across the country. Being in the Midwest for a vacation we made a special stop in Madison to see the Chocolate Shoppe flagship store, operating since 1964. The store is not large, but it has the good stuff: all 48 flavors! It took us a little time, but my wife finally chose Caramel Chaos, and my selection was PB Hearts Chocolate - never seen in CA - with peanut butter ice cream, chocolate layers and peanut butter cups. They have a few indoor tables and a number of outdoor ones as well. There was a steady stream of customers while we were savoring our ice cream. Still as the flagship store I was expecting a little more. First there is no indication that this in fact is a special store, with unique history. I wish there was a write up in the store about Chocllate Shoppe's founding family and how it all came about. And where they are today, with customers across the country. Still, this was a memorable stop for our ice cream pilgrimage.

We stopped in for ice cream, and it was excellent. The texture was what really stood out to me. It was incredibly thick, creamy, and rich, exactly what I want from a good scoop of ice cream. You can tell the difference between this and the lighter, more airy ice cream you find at some other places. I also enjoyed being able to watch the staff making chocolates and other treats right behind the counter. The selection is impressive, with everything from classic fudge to chocolate-covered pecan clusters and some pretty elaborate caramel apples. It's the kind of place where you go in for ice cream and end up looking at everything else for another ten minutes. The shop itself has a classic candy store feel, with plenty of treats on display and a lively atmosphere. Definitely worth stopping in when you're craving something sweet. I'd happily come back for another scoop, although next time I might have to leave room for some fudge!

I rate four stars instead of five because there is a truly 5 Star cookie delivery in town. For awhile Insomnia Cookies was the only game in town. But we're a couple years into the Crumbl experience and it is my preferred cookie shop. Insomnia has the edge if you like consistency of flavors, rather than the weekly rotations à la Crumbl. Insomnia Cookies are flatter and to my mind serving size manageable. One cookie (I hope) is a serving. Whereas at the other place, one cookie is multiple servings and you gain weight and take in too much sugar real fast! Insomnia Cookies is the originator of late night cookies in Madison and worth it especially near campus and downtown. Delivery beyond the local area is available so you can even gift your friend!
