My wife and I are long time Chocolate Shoppe ice cream aficionados from our local ice cream shop in Clayton California. We've been fascinated that Chocolate Shoppe sends their special ice cream to independent ice cream shops across the country. Being in the Midwest for a vacation we made a special stop in Madison to see the Chocolate Shoppe flagship store, operating since 1964. The store is not large, but it has the good stuff: all 48 flavors! It took us a little time, but my wife finally chose Caramel Chaos, and my selection was PB Hearts Chocolate - never seen in CA - with peanut butter ice cream, chocolate layers and peanut butter cups. They have a few indoor tables and a number of outdoor ones as well. There was a steady stream of customers while we were savoring our ice cream. Still as the flagship store I was expecting a little more. First there is no indication that this in fact is a special store, with unique history. I wish there was a write up in the store about Chocllate Shoppe's founding family and how it all came about. And where they are today, with customers across the country. Stopped here after having dinner down the street. Always nice to have a little ice cream after an asian meal. We have had Chocolate Shoppe ice cream before, but never at their actual location. The shoppe is on a bustling corner. It's awnings are outfitted with the brand colors. Pretty distinctive look. Inside is a long counter with many of the most popular flavors. There are table either inside or outside. Got greeted by one of the several servers that were helping the different customers. It was a tough choice but we ended up getting the "This $&@! Just Got Serious" and "Heaps of Love". We got them in cones (my was the chocolate dipped), but because it was warm out we had them place them in a dish - good idea! Found this ice cream shop on Yelp while visiting downtown Madison close to the school while on a work trip. This is the best incarnation of it I've found - I'm one of those people who have spent decades trying to hunt down a successor to the original Baskin-Robbins licorice ice cream (which, I'm told, was oddly white in colour). Not much demand out there apparently, but as a true black licorice fan I had to give it a try when I found Chocolate Shoppe. They've shipped me two orders which were well-packed for travel, cartons were intact, and ice cream was fresh and cold. I can heartily recommend the flavour (if you're a real licorice fan, not some red plastic licorice wannabe-fan) and expect to keep returning for more myself (I may even try the Dark Chocolate).
